RESUMO

To examine the effects of avocado on plasma lipid concentrations a two-diet trial involving 8 phenotype IV and 8 phenotype II dyslipidemia patients was carried out. A diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (DRCA) using the avocado as their major source (30% of the total calories were consumed as fat, 75% of the total fat from the avocado), with restriction of saturated fat and less of 300 mg of cholesterol per day was evaluated. Patients also were in a low-saturated fat diet without avocado (DRSA). The three daily meals were eaten at our clinical unit. Diets were four weeks in duration and they were assigned in a crossover design. In phenotype II both DRCA and DRSA significantly reduced total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels. On phenotype IV DRCA produced a mild reduction on triglyceride levels while DRSA increased them. On HDL-cholesterol concentrations DRCA produced a significant increase in both phenotypes while DRSA did it only in phenotype IV. Avocado is an excellent source of monounsaturated fatty acids in diets designed to treat hypercholesterolemia with some advantages over low-fat diets with a greater amount of carbohydrates.

RESUMO

In previous papers it was reported that rapeseed could prevent the development of cirrhosis induced by carbon tetrachloride and at the same time can induce liver regeneration in the rat. In such experiments rapeseed was always obtained from the same distributor "Semillas Berentsen". When reseed of different distributors was used, neither cirrhosis prevention or liver regeneration was observed. The difference among the rapeseed used was that "Semillas Berentsen" utilizes a fungicide to preserve the seed and the other distributors do not use any preservative. This circumstance made think that the active principle responsible for the effects observed is probably the fungicide.

RESUMO

It has been reported that rapeseed in hens has been able to induce liver reticulum lysis and in rats it was possible to prevent the development of liver cirrhosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4). The objective of these experiments is 1st. to confirm by a more extensive study the prevention of cirrhosis; 2nd. to determine the ratio of rapeseed necessary to inhibit the development of cirrhosis and 3rd. to learn if the active part can be found in the whole seed, in the oil or in the meal. Wistar white male rats were used, to which CCl 4 was administered to induce liver cirrhosis and simultaneously rapeseed was administered mixed in the food at different concentrations, rapeseed oil and meal were also administered. The results of this study confirmed, first that rapeseed was able to prevent the cirrhosis development, second that this prevention can be obtained at 10% concentration, but not less, and third that rapeseed oil affords only partial protection and the meal affords none.
