RESUMO

Physical activity has been demonstrated to have a significant impact on gut microbial diversity and function. Emerging research has revealed certain aspects of the complex interactions between the gut, exercise, microbiota, and neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting that changes in gut microbial diversity and metabolic function may have an impact on the onset and progression of neurological conditions. This study aimed to review the current literature from several databases until 1 June 2023 (PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) on the interplay between the gut, physical exercise, microbiota, and neurodegeneration. We summarized the roles of exercise and gut microbiota on neurodegeneration and identified the ways in which these are all connected. The gut-brain axis is a complex and multifaceted network that has gained considerable attention in recent years. Research indicates that gut microbiota plays vital roles in metabolic shifts during physiological or pathophysiological conditions in neurodegenerative diseases; therefore, they are closely related to maintaining overall health and well-being. Similarly, exercise has shown positive effects on brain health and cognitive function, which may reduce/delay the onset of severe neurological disorders. Exercise has been associated with various neurochemical changes, including alterations in cortisol levels, increased production of endorphins, endocannabinoids like anandamide, as well as higher levels of serotonin and dopamine. These changes have been linked to mood improvements, enhanced sleep quality, better motor control, and cognitive enhancements resulting from exercise-induced effects. However, further clinical research is necessary to evaluate changes in bacteria taxa along with age- and sex-based differences.

Given the lack of publications and public policies addressing the relationship between climate change and cancer care in Colombia, we present an exploration of the perspectives and communication practices of a group of nurses from Valle del Cauca and Antioquia. We provide a context based on the available literature on climate change and general health then provide an overview of cancer in the country. Next, we present how oncology nurses have incorporated information about strategies their patients can use to mitigate the effects of climate change on their health. We highlight the centrality of patient-centered communication using a framework from the US National Cancer Institute) and the fundamental role nurses have in patients' experiences throughout their treatment. We conclude with the need to investigate oncology nurse communication practices in other Colombian hospitals, with consideration of culture, cancer stigma, barriers to care and other factors that may influence successful climate change mitigation and to better understand how other Latin American oncology nurses are addressing this serious challenge.

Economic objectification is a form of dehumanization in which workers are treated as tools for enhancing productivity. It can lead to self-objectification in the workplace, which is when people perceive themselves as instruments for work. This can cause burnout, emotional drain, and a modification of self-perception that involves a loss of human attributes such as emotions and reasoning while focusing on others' perspectives for evaluating the self. Research on workers self-objectification has mainly analyzed the consequences of this process without exploring the brain activity that underlies the individual's experiences of self-objectification. Thus, this project explores the electroencephalographic (EEG) changes that occur in participants during an economic objectifying task that resembled a job in an online store. After the task, a self-objectification questionnaire was applied and its resulting index was used to label the participants as self-objectified or non-self-objectified. The changes over time in EEG event-related synchronization (ERS) and partial directed coherence (PDC) were calculated and compared between the self-objectification groups. The results show that the main differences between the groups in ERS and PDC occurred in the beta and gamma frequencies, but only the PDC results correlated with the self-objectification group. These results provide information for further understanding workers' self-objectification. These EEG changes could indicate that economic self-objectification is associated with changes in vigilance, boredom, and mind-wandering.

Fatty Acid-Binding Proteins (FABPs) are abundant intracellular proteins that bind long chain fatty acids (FA) and have been related with inmunometabolic diseases. Intestinal epithelial cells express two isoforms of FABPs: liver FABP (LFABP or FABP1) and intestinal FABP (IFABP or FABP2). They are thought to be associated with intracellular dietary lipid transport and trafficking towards diverse cell fates. But still their specific functions are not well understood. To study FABP1's functions, we generated an FABP1 knockdown model in Caco-2 cell line by stable antisense cDNA transfection (FABP1as). In these cells FABP1 expression was reduced up to 87%. No compensatory increase in FABP2 was observed, strengthening the idea of differential functions of both isoforms. In differentiated FABP1as cells, apical administration of oleate showed a decrease in its initial uptake rate and in long term incorporation compared with control cells. FABP1 depletion also reduced basolateral oleate secretion. The secreted oleate distribution showed an increase in FA/triacylglyceride ratio compared to control cells, probably due to FABP1's role in chylomicron assembly. Interestingly, FABP1as cells exhibited a dramatic decrease in proliferation rate. A reduction in oleate uptake as well as a decrease in its incorporation into the phospholipid fraction was observed in proliferating cells. Overall, our studies indicate that FABP1 is essential for proper lipid metabolism in differentiated enterocytes, particularly concerning fatty acids uptake and its basolateral secretion. Moreover, we show that FABP1 is required for enterocyte proliferation, suggesting that it may contribute to intestinal homeostasis.

El objetivo de este estudio fue explorar y analizar la relación entre emociones, sentimientos y estados de ánimo con el comportamiento, principalmente el alimentario, en pacientes con trastornos de la conducta alimentaria (TCA). Participaron 43 mujeres, de entre 14 y 45 años de edad (M= 19.8, DE= 6.8), 19 con el diagnóstico de anorexia nerviosa, 22 con bulimia nerviosa, y dos con trastorno por atracón). Todas asistían a un programa ambulatorio intensivo. Con base en una metodología cualitativa, se analizaron los contenidos de una sesión de terapia grupal conductual dialéctica. Frente a emociones negativas, se observó que estas pacientes —independientemente del tipo de TCA— usan preferentemente estrategias de supresión más que de reinterpretación. Específicamente, las pacientes con anorexia nerviosa suelen afrontar las emociones negativas con base en la expresión de síntomas restrictivos; mientras que aquellas con síntomas bulímicos, lo realizan a través de atracones y/o purgas. Fue notoria la dificultad de todas las pacientes para nombrar y discriminar sus emociones, o asociarlas con sus comportamientos maladaptativos. El tratamiento de los TCA requiere del uso de técnicas terapéuticas enfocadas a fortalecer en estas pacientes la tolerancia al malestar inducido por emociones negativas, pero que además promuevan la reinterpretación de estas.


The aim of this article was to explore and analyze the relationship between emotions, feelings and moods, with eating behavior and other behaviors in patients with eating disorders (ED). A total of 43 women aged among 14 to 45 years (M= 19.8, SD= 6.8), 19 were diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, 22 with bulimia nervosa and two with binge eating disorder. All participants attended to an ambulatory intensive program. Based on a qualitative methodology, it was analyzed the content of a dialectical behavior therapy group session. Before negative emotions it was observed that patients —regardless of the ED diagnostic— preferentially use suppression strategies rather than re-appraisal. Specifically, patients with anorexia nervosa tend to face negative emotions based on the expression of restrictive symptoms while bulimic ones tend to binge and/or purge. It was notorious the difficulty of all patients to name and discriminate emotions or associate them with maladaptive behaviors. ED treatment requires therapeutic techniques aimed to strength tolerance when discomfort is induced by negative emotions, but also promoting re-appraisal of these emotions.

The Atlantic Forest is separated from the Andean tropical forest by dry and open vegetation biomes (Chaco and Cerrado). Despite this isolation, both rainforests share closely related lineages, which suggest a past connection. This connection could have been important for forest taxa evolution. In this study, we used the Saffron-billed Sparrow (Arremon flavirostris) as a model to evaluate whether the Andean and the Atlantic forests act as a refugia system, as well as to test for a history of biogeographic connection between them. In addition, we evaluated the molecular systematic of intraspecific lineages of the studied species. We modeled the current and past distribution of A. flavirostris, performed phylogeographic analyses based on mitochondrial and nuclear genes, and used Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) analyses to test for biogeographic scenarios. The major phylogeographic disjunction within A. flavirostris was found between the Andean and the Atlantic forests, with a divergence that occurred during the Mid-Pleistocene. Our paleodistribution models indicated a connection between these forest domains in different periods and through both the Chaco and Cerrado. Additionally, the phylogeographic and ABC analyses supported that the Cerrado was the main route of connection between these rainforests, but without giving decisive evidence against a Chaco connection. Our study with A. flavirostris suggest that the biodiversity of the Andean and of the Atlantic forests could have been impacted (and perhaps enriched?) by cycles of connections through the Cerrado and Chaco. This recurrent cycle of connection between the Andean and the Atlantic Forest could have been important for the evolution of Neotropical forest taxa. In addition, we discussed taxonomic implications of the results and proposed to split the studied taxon into two full species.

Colombia is the country with the largest number of bird species worldwide, yet its avifauna is seriously threatened by habitat degradation and poaching. We built a DNA barcode library of nearly half of the bird species listed in the CITES appendices for Colombia, thereby constructing a species identification reference that will help in global efforts for controlling illegal species trade. We obtained the COI barcode sequence of 151 species based on 281 samples, representing 46% of CITES bird species registered for Colombia. The species analysed belong to nine families, where Trochilidae and Psittacidae are the most abundant ones. We sequenced for the first time the DNA barcode of 47 species, mainly hummingbirds endemic of the Northern Andes region. We found a correct match between morphological and genetic identification for 86-92% of the species analysed, depending on the cluster analysis performed (BIN, ABGD and TaxonDNA). Additionally, we identified eleven cases of high intraspecific divergence based on K2P genetic distances (up to 14.61%) that could reflect cryptic diversity. In these cases, the specimens were collected in geographically distant sites such as different mountain systems, opposite flanks of the mountain or different elevations. Likewise, we found two cases of possible hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting. This survey constitutes the first attempt to build the DNA barcode library of endangered bird species in Colombia establishing as a reference for management programs of illegal species trade, and providing major insights of phylogeographic structure that can guide future taxonomic research.

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy that develops in genetically susceptible individuals following exposure to dietary gluten. Severe changes at the intestinal mucosa observed in untreated CD patients are linked to changes in the level and in the pattern of expression of different genes. Fully differentiated epithelial cells express two isoforms of fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs): intestinal and liver, IFABP and LFABP, respectively. These proteins bind and transport long chain fatty acids and also have other important biological roles in signaling pathways, particularly those related to PPARγ and inflammatory processes. Herein, we analyze the serum levels of IFABP and characterize the expression of both FABPs at protein and mRNA level in small intestinal mucosa in severe enteropathy and normal tissue. As a result, we observed higher levels of circulating IFABP in untreated CD patients compared with controls and patients on gluten-free diet. In duodenal mucosa a differential FABPs expression pattern was observed with a reduction in mRNA levels compared to controls explained by the epithelium loss in severe enteropathy. In conclusion, we report changes in FABPs' expression pattern in severe enteropathy. Consequently, there might be alterations in lipid metabolism and the inflammatory process in the small intestinal mucosa.

We explored the phylogeographic patterns of intraspecific diversity in the Red-crowned Ant Tanager (Habia rubica) throughout its continent-wide distribution, in order to understand its evolutionary history and the role of evolutionary drivers that are considered to promote avian diversification in the Neotropics. We sampled 100 individuals of H. rubica from Mexico to Argentina covering the main areas of its disjunct distribution. We inferred phylogenetic relationships through Bayesian and maximum parsimony methodologies based on mitochondrial and nuclear markers, and complemented genetic analyses with the assessment of coloration and behavioral differentiation. We found four deeply divergent phylogroups within H. rubica: two South American lineages and two Mexican and Middle American lineages. The divergence event between the northern and southern phylogroups was dated to c. 5.0 Ma, seemingly related to the final uplift of the Northern Andes. Subsequently, the two South American phylogroups split c. 3.5 Ma possibly due to the development of the open vegetation corridor that currently isolates the Amazonian and Atlantic forests. Diversification throughout Mexico and Middle America, following dispersion across the Isthmus of Panama, was presumably more recent and coincident with Pleistocene climatic fluctuations and habitat fragmentations. The analyses of vocalizations and plumage coloration showed significant differences among main lineages that were consistent with the phylogenetic evidence. Our findings suggest that the evolutionary history of H. rubica has been shaped by an assortment of diversification drivers at different temporal and spatial scales resulting in deeply divergent lineages that we recommend should be treated as different species.

Intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (IFABP) is highly expressed in the intestinal epithelium and it belongs to the family of soluble lipid binding proteins. These proteins are thought to participate in most aspects of the biology of lipids, regulating its availability for specific metabolic pathways, targeting and vectorial trafficking of lipids to specific subcellular compartments. The present study is based on the ability of IFABP to interact with phospholipid membranes, and we characterized its immersion into the bilayer's hydrophobic central region occupied by the acyl-chains. We constructed a series of Trp-mutants of IFABP to selectively probe the interaction of different regions of the protein, particularly the elements forming the portal domain that is proposed to regulate the exit and entry of ligands to/from the binding cavity. We employed several fluorescent techniques based on selective quenching induced by soluble or membrane confined agents. The results indicate that the portal region of IFABP penetrates deeply into the phospholipid bilayer, especially when CL-containing vesicles are employed. The orientation of the protein and the degree of penetration were highly dependent on the lipid composition, the superficial net charge and the ionic strength of the medium. These results may be relevant to understand the mechanism of ligand transfer and the specificity responsible for the unique functions of each member of the FABP family.
