RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite constant technological evolution, the forestry sector is still characterised as one with the highest risk of occupational accidents. There is no doubt that accidents penalise workers considerably, as well as the companies, insurers, and, consequently, the society, to which many of the costs are externalised, namely in cases where the worker is incapacitated and unable to work. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to analyse data on occupational accidents in forestry operations in Brazil between 2007 and 2018 in both native and planted forests. METHODS: Data were made available by the Brazilian Statistical Directory of Accidents at Work. RESULTS: The results show that, although most accidents occurred in planted forests, mortality was higher in native forests. It was also found that, overall, the rate of serious accidents resulting in an incapacity to work and, consequently, sick leave is considerably high. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight that integrating an occupational safety system into a forest management system is crucial for reducing work-related accidents in both native and planted forests. However, the success of this measure will only be effective if it is accompanied by a review of both the Brazilian labour policy and the Brazilian occupational safety management policy, to ensure compliance with legislation, mainly on the part of outsourced companies.

The transfusion of blood components in veterinary medicine has been increasing in recent years, thereby increasing the potential for transfusion reactions, which can eventually be fatal. In this study, a 3-month-old, female, Non-Breed dog diagnosed with hemoparasitosis, carried out using a complete blood count (regenerative anemia with visualization of Ehrlichia canis morula in leukocytes and thrombocytopenia of 80 thousand platelets/dL) and ultrasonography (hepatosplenomegaly), was referred to the blood bank to undergo a transfusion of platelet concentrate (PC), since she had petechiae, abdominal suffusions and had suffered some episodes of epistaxis. After physical examination of the patient who presented with normal parameters for the species, began the transfusion of PC through the cephalic vein. At 30 minutes from the beginning of the procedure, intense sialorrhea and skin erythema were documented. The transfusion was stopped, and 0.5 mg / kg of dexamethasone was applied intravenously, 0.044 mg / kg of atropine and 0.2 mg / kg of promethazine both subcutaneously. 40 minutes latter occurred normalization of clinical parameters. Platelet concentrate transfusion is an important therapeutic and prophylactic procedure in the treatment and prevention of bleeding, when due to numerical or qualitative platelet deficiency. However, risks inherent to the process must be considered, and exposed to the tutor. In this report, we describe an adverse reaction in a young dog (type 1 hypersensitivity) reversed with the immediate use of corticosteroids associated with a cholinergic and antihistamine antagonist.

RESUMO

The Brazilian Food, Drug and Sanitary Agency (ANVISA) published a Resolution (RDC 67) in 2007, repealing RDC 33 of 2000, which established a legally required monthly analysis of a number of microbiological and physicochemical variables in the purified water used in compounded pharmaceutical preparations, which were not specified in the preceding RDC. In view of the amendment, the aim of this study was to assess the quality of purified water used in compounding pharmacies in the region of Araraquara (SP, Brazil) and review the impact of the most recent regulation (RDC 67 of 2007) on this quality. In the study, 744 samples of purified water were collected from 30 pharmacies in the course of four years (2008 to 2011). The variables recorded were: presence of total coliforms and fecal coliforms/E. coli, pH, color, turbidity, total dissolved solids, fluoride and residual free chlorine. The methods used were pharmacopeial standards for water analysis, published by the Brazilian National Health Foundation (FUNASA) and the American Public Health Association (APHA). Among the samples, 78.90% were in compliance with the required standards. No sample contravened the rules for color and fecal coliforms/E. coli. However, 0.54%, 7.80%, 10.75%, 0.54% and 4.56% of the samples were unacceptable in terms of turbidity, fluorides, pH, free residual chlorine and total coliforms respectively. There was a variation in the number of irregular samples by comparing the years of 2008 and 2009 (20.26% and 26.71%, respectively) and the years of 2010 and 2011 (18.33% and 19.91%, respectively). Four years after the RDC n°. 67 of 2007, manipulation pharmacies are still adjusting to the rules, and it is important that ANVISA and others agencies continue monitoring to ensure the quality of purified water...

Protein malnutrition is particularly deleterious in young individuals. An immunodeficient state is a well‑known functional consequence but alterations in thymic morphology remain unknown. Our aim is to analyze morphological characteristics of the rat thymus in a perinatal undernutrition and renutrition model – we hypothesize these morphological alterations are reversible with early refeeding. Ninety-day-old Wistar rats were allowed to mate and divided into three groups: nourished (N – normal 20% protein diet), undernourished (UN – pre- and postnatal 5% protein diet until post-natal day 60 – PND 60) and renourished (RN – as UN but normal diet from PND 21 to 60). The thymi of 10 pups/group were submitted to macroscopic, histology, morphometry and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Body weight was highest in N and lowest in UN animals as expected but the thymic/body weight ratio remained similar in N and UN; this ratio was significantly higher in the RN group. UN thymi had a prevalence of type I collagen fibers, atrophic lobules and absence of a clear corticomedullary boundary. Thymic cortical component was decreased in UN. Apoptotic thymocytes were more frequently visualized in the UN thymi. N and RN thymi exhibited very similar morphology. Perinatal protein malnutrition induces drastic morphological alterations in rat thymi but these could be largely reversed with early renutrition. Functional studies are needed to assess if organ function mimics morphology in its recovery.

RESUMO

Ionizing radiation has been successfully employed to modify the immunological properties of biomolecules. Very promising results were obtained when crude animal venoms, as well as isolated toxins, were treated with 60Co gamma rays, yielding toxoids with good immunogenicity. The achievement of modified antigens with lower toxicity and preserved or improved immunogenicity can be very useful. Ionizing radiation has already been proven to be a powerful tool to attenuate snake venom toxicity without affecting, and even increasing, their immunogenic properties. However, little is known about the modifications that irradiated molecules undergo and even less about the immunological response that such antigens elicit. In the present work, we investigated the immunological behavior of bothropstoxin-1, a K49 phospholipase, before and after irradiation. Structural modifications of the toxin were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Isogenic mice were immunized with either the native or the irradiated toxin. The circulating antibodies were isotyped and titrated by ELISA. According to our data, irradiation promoted structural modifications in the toxin characterized by higher molecular weight forms of proteins (aggregates and oligomers). The results also indicated that irradiated toxins were immunogenic and antibodies elicited by them were able to recognize the native toxin in ELISA. These findings suggest that irradiation of toxic proteins can promote significant modifications in their structures; however they still retain many of the original antigenic and immunological properties of native proteins. Also, our data indicate that irradiated proteins induce higher titers of IgG2a and IgG2b, suggesting that Th1 cells are predominantly involved in the immune response.

RESUMO

The biochemical profiles of crossbred dogs experimentally infected with the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum were studied. Two groups of five dogs were experimentally inoculated with 50 and 100 third stage infective larvae (L3) of A. vasorum per kilogram of body weight. A third group of five uninfected animals were used as control. Serum from these animals were used for biochemical tests to measure total and fractioned proteins, urea, creatinine and to determine the activities of aspartate (AST), alanine (ALT) aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (PAL) and creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (CK-MB). The alpha-1, alpha-2 and beta-globulins fractions showed alterations during acute phase of the infection. No modifications were observed in the biochemical profiles of ALT, AST, GGT, PAL, urea and creatinine. CK-MB was shown to be a good early indicator of cardiac injury in dogs experimentally infected with A. vasorum.

RESUMO

The presence of three dark spots on the abdomen is typical of the tripunctata group of Drosophila, which is the second largest Neotropical group, with 56 species. In some species, such as D. mediopunctata, the colour pattern varies considerably: ranging from flies showing no spots up to flies with three dark spots. In this paper, we present a genetic (chromosomal) analysis of this character showing that this colour polymorphism is genetically determined mainly by the second chromosome. Since this chromosome is the most polymorphic for inversions in this species, we also examined the influence of the inversions on this character. We used strains in which different second chromosomes were placed on the same genetic background and the offspring between them. We found a nonrandom association between the number of spots and the inversions PA0 and PC0. Thus, our results are consistent with the idea that the factors or genes determining a conspicuous polymorphism are likely to be associated, forming a supergene, and this association would be most efficiently accomplished through a chromosome inversion. Moreover, this is the first time that an association between a conspicuous morphological polymorphism and chromosome inversions has been described.
