RESUMO

Evaluation of four patients with unilateral transverse limb reduction defects indicates that some instances of this structural defect may be the result of an in utero vascular accident. Three of the four patients had microscopic evidence of fetal vascular occlusive disease on multiple sections of the placenta, suggesting that occlusion of the brachial artery was secondary to embolization from the placental vascular thrombi. The fourth, a 116 mm crown-rump long fetus, had a massive thrombus occluding the brachial artery, which was felt secondary to hypovolemia and hypoperfusion associated with fetal blood loss during placental abruption. Recognition of the disruptive vascular pathogenesis of some cases of unilateral transverse limb reduction defects explains their negligible recurrence risk. In such cases attention should be focused on careful gross and, microscopic evaluation of the placenta.

RESUMO

Two unrelated infants with congenital skin defects (aplasia cutis congenita) involving the trunk and limbs, each with an associated monozygotic twin fetus papyraceus, are described. Evidence from these two cases and a review of the literature indicate that congenital skin defects of other body areas, as represented by these two children, is a specific pattern of malformation distinct from isolated small congenital skin defects involving the vertex of the scalp. The frequent occurrence of fetus papyraceus in patients with congenital skin defects of other body areas suggests a common etiology for these two phenomena.

RESUMO

A general account of the armadillo, including historical references and laboratory maintenance is given. Some of the commonly encountered diseases and details of useful surgical procedures are described. Important studies utilizing the armadillo in various biological fields are reviewed, and the wide potential of this animal as an experimental model in studies of genetics, immunology and reproductive physiology is stressed.
