TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) have a wide range of industrial applications (paintings, sunscreens, food and cosmetics) and is one of the most intensively used nanomaterials worldwide. Leaching from commercial products TiO2-NPs are predicted to significantly accumulate in wastewater sludges, which are then often used as soil amendment. In this work, sludge samples from four wastewater treatment plants of the Chihuahua State in Mexico were obtained during spring and summer (2017). A comprehensive characterization study was performed by X-ray based (laboratory and synchrotron) techniques and electron microscopy. Ti was detected in all sludge samples (1810-2760 mg/kg) mainly as TiO2 particles ranging from 40 nm up to hundreds of nm. Micro-XANES data was analyzed by principal component analysis and linear combination fitting enabling the identification of three predominant Ti species: anatase, rutile and ilmenite. Micro-XANES from the smaller Ti particles was predominantly anatase (68% + 32% rutile), suggesting these TiO2-NPs originate from paintings and cosmetics. TEM imaging confirmed the presence of nanoscale Ti with smooth surface morphologies resembling engineered TiO2-NPs. The size and crystalline phase of TiO2-NPs in the sludge from this region suggest increased reactivity and potential toxicity to agro-systems. Further studies should be dedicated to evaluating this.

We investigated population structure and arsenic bioaccumulation and distribution in zooplankton inhabiting highly contaminated freshwater with arsenic. We collected water and zooplankton samples over a 4 year period, determined environmental temperature as well as water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), dissolved oxygen (DO), major cations and anions and total arsenic concentration. We identified zooplankton species and determined their abundance, length, sex ratios, and arsenic bioaccumulation and distribution in exposed organisms. At the study site, an extremophile, Paracyclops chiltoni, was found to survive in an environment with high concentration of arsenic, sulfate and fluoride in freshwater as a well-adapted organism. Results showed that the average arsenic concentration in freshwater was 53.64 ± 10.58 mg/L. Exposed organisms of Paracyclops chiltoni showed arsenic accumulation (up to 9.6 ± 5.4 mgAs/kg) in its body, likely in the digestive tract as well as typical abundance and length, which showed a relationship to environmental temperature and oxic conditions in freshwater. Metallotolerant copepods might help to better understand if arsenic methylation processes occur in freshwater aquatic organisms.

Chronic psychological stress is an important public health issue which generates behavioral changes, anxiety, immunosuppression and oxidative damage. Piracetam is a cognitive enhancer, at cellular level it protects from oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of psychological stress and of piracetam on circulating mononuclear cells by analyzing the biochemical spectrome using Synchrotron Radiation Fourier Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy (SR-µFTIR). Rats were exposed for five days to a stressor (cat odor) under oral administration of piracetam (600 mg/kg). SR-µFTIR analysis showed a decrease in bands associated to the lipids region (2852 cm-1, 2923 cm-1 and 2962 cm-1) and an increase absorption of the amide I band (1654 cm-1) under stress conditions. The principal component analysis showed increase oxidation of lipids (decrease of 3010 cm-1, 2923 cm-1 and 2852 cm-1 bands) as well as proteins denaturation (increase of 1610 cm-1 and 1690 cm-1 bands) under stress. Piracetam provided protection to polyunsaturated lipids (p ≤ 0.001) and lipids/proteins ratio (p ≤ 0.001). Behaviorally, this drug diminished fear and anxiety in stressed animals by the plus maze test (p ≤ 0.002). However, this drug induced oxidative stress in mononuclear cells from unstressed animals and altered their behavior.

Seeds accumulate iron during embryo maturation stages of embryogenesis. Using Arabidopsis thaliana as model plant, it has been described that mature embryos accumulate iron within a specific cell layer, the endodermis. This distribution pattern was conserved in most of the analyzed members from Brassicales, with the exception of the basal Vasconcellea pubescens that also showed elevated amounts of iron in cortex cells. To determine whether the V. pubescens iron distribution was indicative of a wider pattern in non-Brassicales Eudicotyledoneae, we studied iron distribution pattern in different embryos belonging to plant species from different Orders from Eudicotyledoneae and one basal from Magnoliidae. The results obtained indicate that iron distribution in A. thaliana embryo is an extreme case of apomorphic character found in Brassicales, not-extensive to the rest of Eudicotyledoneae.

The protective effect of different polyphenols, catechin (Cat), quercetin (Qc) (flavonoids), gallic acid (GA), caffeic acid (CfA), chlorogenic acid (ChA) (phenolic acids), and capsaicin (Cap), against H2O2-induced oxidative stress was evaluated in rat enterocytes using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy (FTIRM), and results were compared to standard lipid peroxidation techniques: conjugated dienes (CD) and Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS). Analysis of ATR-FTIR and FTIRM spectral data allowed the simultaneous evaluation of the effects of H2O2 and polyphenols on lipid and protein oxidation. All polyphenols showed a protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in enterocytes, when administered before or after H2O2. Cat and capsaicin showed the highest protective effect, while phenolic acids had weaker effects and Qc presented a mild prooxidative effect (IR spectral profile of biomolecules between control and H2O2-treated cells) according to FTIR analyses. These results demonstrated the viability to use infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the oxidant and antioxidant effect of molecules in cell systems assays.
