The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for partial and cumulative egg production in a commercial broiler female line. Ten monthly periods between 25 and 64 weeks, three partial periods of 25 to 32, 33 to 48 and 49 to 64 cumulative weeks and three periods of 25 to 30, 40 and 50 weeks of age and total egg production were considered. The restricted maximum likelihood method under the animal model was used to estimate the covariance components and genetic parameters. The fixed effect of incubation and the additive genetic and residual random effects were considered. The estimated heritability ranged from 0.12 to 0.41. These estimates showed that the anterior and posterior periods of the higher production have greater genetic variability. The genetic correlations between periods of the egg production studied ranged from -0.12 to 0.98. In general, the pattern of variation was similar between the strategies evaluated and all were genetically associated with the total egg production. The results of this study showed that the improvement of the total egg production is feasible by selection of partial records. However, considering the relative efficiency of selection, the second month and the periods from the fortieth week of production would be the most suitable.

RESUMO

Selection among broilers for performance traits is resulting in locomotion problems and bone disorders, once skeletal structure is not strong enough to support body weight in broilers with high growth rates. In this study, genetic parameters were estimated for body weight at 42 days of age (BW42), and tibia traits (length, width, and weight) in a population of broiler chickens. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for tibia traits to expand our knowledge of the genetic architecture of the broiler population. Genetic correlations ranged from 0.56 ± 0.18 (between tibia length and BW42) to 0.89 ± 0.06 (between tibia width and weight), suggesting that these traits are either controlled by pleiotropic genes or by genes that are in linkage disequilibrium. For QTL mapping, the genome was scanned with 127 microsatellites, representing a coverage of 2630 cM. Eight QTL were mapped on Gallus gallus chromosomes (GGA): GGA1, GGA4, GGA6, GGA13, and GGA24. The QTL regions for tibia length and weight were mapped on GGA1, between LEI0079 and MCW145 markers. The gene DACH1 is located in this region; this gene acts to form the apical ectodermal ridge, responsible for limb development. Body weight at 42 days of age was included in the model as a covariate for selection effect of bone traits. Two QTL were found for tibia weight on GGA2 and GGA4, and one for tibia width on GGA3. Information originating from these QTL will assist in the search for candidate genes for these bone traits in future studies.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic and environmental parameters for carcass, carcass part, and organ weights in a paternal strain of broiler chickens that was selected mainly for body weight at 42 days of age (BW42) to provide support for poultry genetic improvement programs. A total of 1448 chickens were used that resulted from the expansion of a pure paternal strain named TT, which was developed by Embrapa Suínos e Aves. The following weights were evaluated: BW42, chilled carcass, wing, drumstick meat, thigh meat, breast meat, breast fillet, back, liver, heart (HRT), and gizzard (GIZ). The variance component was estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method using a multi-trait animal model. The general model included the additive genetic and residual random effects and the fixed effect of the sex-hatch group (10 levels). The heritability estimates ranged from 0.27 ± 0.06 for HRT to 0.44 ± 0.08 for GIZ. These results indicated that all the traits have enough additive genetic variability to respond to selection. The genetic correlation estimates between BW42 and the carcass and carcass part weights were high and positive. However, the genetic correlation estimates between BW42 and organ weights were low. In this population, the carcass traits might respond indirectly to selection applied to BW42. It can be concluded that selection to increase BW42 is not effective in improving broiler organ weight. Therefore, to obtain suitable genetic improvement for these traits, the selection indexes for broilers should include organ weight-based criteria.

Records from 14,288 animals of the Mangalarga Marchador breed, born from 1990 to 2005, were used to discard morphofunctional traits in a principal component analysis. The following traits were used: height at withers, height at croup, lengths of head, neck, back, croup, hip length and body, widths of head, hip width, thorax perimeter, cannon bone circumference and gait score. For the traits considered it was observed that 7 principal components showed variation lower than 0.7; suggesting that seven variables could be discarded. The reason is that when variable are highly correlated with the principal components of smaller variance, their variation is practically insignificant. Based on those results the recommendation is to maintain the following traits for future research with this database: gait score, height at croup, length of back, length of croup, width of head and cannon bone circumference.

RESUMO

Egg production curves describe the laying patterns of hen populations over time. The objectives of this study were to fit the weekly egg production rate of selected and nonselected lines of a White Leghorn hen population, using nonlinear and segmented polynomial models, and to study how the selection process changed the egg-laying patterns between these 2 lines. Weekly egg production rates over 54 wk of egg production (from 17 to 70 wk of age) were measured from 1,693 and 282 laying hens from one selected and one nonselected (control) genetic line, respectively. Six nonlinear and one segmented polynomial models were gathered from the literature to investigate whether they could be used to fit curves for the weekly egg production rate. The goodness of fit of the models was measured using Akaike's information criterion, mean square error, coefficient of determination, graphical analysis of the fitted curves, and the deviations of the fitted curves. The Logistic, Yang, Segmented Polynomial, and Grossman models presented the best goodness of fit. In this population, there were significant differences between the parameter estimates of the curves fitted for the selected and nonselected lines, thus indicating that the effect of selection changed the shape of the egg production curves. The selection for egg production was efficient in modifying the birds' egg production curve in this population, thus resulting in genetic gain from the 5th to the 54th week of egg laying and improved the peak egg production and the persistence of egg laying.

RESUMO

We estimated genetic parameters for egg production in different periods by means of random regression models, aiming at selection based on partial egg production from a generation of layers. The production was evaluated for each individual by recording the number of eggs produced from 20 to 70 weeks of age, with partial records taken every three weeks for a total of 17 periods. The covariance functions were estimated with a random regression model by the restricted maximum likelihood method. A model composed of third-order polynomials for the additive effect, ninth-order polynomials for the permanent environment, and a residual variance structure with five distinct classes, was found to be most suitable for adjusting the egg production data for laying hens. The heritability estimates varied from 0.04 to 0.14. The genetic correlations were all positive, varying from 0.10 to 0.99. Selection applied in partial egg production periods will result in greater genetic profit for the adjacent periods. However, as the distance in time between periods increases, selection becomes less efficient. Selection based on the second period (23 to 25 weeks of age), where greater heritability was estimated, would note benefit the final egg-laying cycle periods.

RESUMO

Genetic parameters for weight at maturity (WM), maturation rate (MR), age and weight at first calving (AFC and WFC) and second calving (ASC and WSC) were estimated for females of the Canchim breed. The number of records per trait ranged from 1440 to 1923. The restricted maximum likelihood method was used and the statistical model included the fixed effect of contemporary group and the additive genetic and residual as random effects. The mean heritability estimate and respective standard errors were 0.34±0.05 (WM), 0.13±0.04 (MR), 0.14±0.04 (AFC), 0.44±0.06 (WFC), 0.16±0.06 (ASC) and 0.39±0.06 (WSC). The heritability estimate for WM and MR suggested that it would be possible to achieve changes in the animals' growth curve through selection, but the genetic correlation between these two traits suggested that there would be antagonism between them. Selection for WM would result in animals with later growth and would also affect individuals' sexual precocity. This was also seen from the genetic correlations between WM and the other traits, which ranged from 0.37 to 0.98; and between MR and the other traits, which ranged from -0.83 to -0.25. Selection to modify WM would be expected to result in correlated responses in AFC, WFC and WSC and a moderate response in ASC. Although the heritability estimate for MR was low, selection aimed for its increase might cause a large decrease in AFC, ASC and WFC and a moderate change in WSC, and this could be an alternative for improving the progeny's overall performance.

The heritabilities for direct and maternal genetic effects and genetic correlations between these effects were estimated for weight at 205 (P205), 365 (P365), and 550 days (P550) in a Nelore herd in northern Minas Gerais. The statistical model included direct and maternal additive effects, in addition to the fixed effects of contemporary group (farm, gender, diet, season - dry and water -, and year of birth) and the covariate age of cow at calving (linear and quadratic effects). The variance components and genetic values were estimated by REML method. The genetic trend was obtained using the regression of the annual mean genetic value in relation to the year birth. The heritability estimates for the direct additive effect (H2O) for P205, P365, and P550 were equal to 0.60, 0.69, and 0.75, respectively. These coefficients showed high magnitude, indicating that the herd in question presents a great additive genetic variability and therefore it is expected a great progress using genetic selection. By the analysis of genetic trend, it was verified a development in animals genetic values over the years studied.(AU)
