RESUMO

We report the resistivity of 5 Cu films approximately 65 nm thick, measured between 5 and 290 K, and the transverse magnetoresistance and Hall effect measured at temperatures 5 K < T < 50 K. The mean grain diameters are D = (8.9, 9.8, 20.2, 31.5, 34.7) nm, respectively. The magnetoresistance signal is positive in samples where D > L/2 (where L = 39 nm is the electron mean free path in the bulk at room temperature), and negative in samples where D < L/2. The sample where D = 20.2 nm exhibits a negative magnetoresistance at B < 2 Tesla and a positive magnetoresistance at B > 3 Tesla. A negative magnetoresistance in Cu films has been considered evidence of charge transport involving weak Anderson localization. These experiments reveal that electron scattering by disordered grain boundaries found along L leads to weak Anderson localization, confirming the localization phenomenon predicted by the quantum theory of resistivity of nanometric metallic connectors. Anderson localization becomes a severe obstacle for the successful development of the circuit miniaturization effort pursued by the electronic industry, for it leads to a steep rise in the resistivity of nanometric metallic connectors with decreasing wire dimensions (D < L/2) employed in the design of Integrated Circuits.

Introduction: the type 2 diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous and multifactor disease determined by genetic and no-genetic factors. The substrate 1 of insulin receptor (IRS-1) has a fundamental function in transmission of insulin signal, thus its genic variants are significant targets in study of genetic susceptibility to this disease in different populations. Objective: to explore the role of the Gly972Arg and Ala513PRo of IRS-1 gen polymorphous variants in the genetic susceptibility of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Cuban population. Methods: the frequency of above mentioned polymorphous variants in 499 Cuban citizens with a 22-30 body mass index aged between 40 to 70 including 272 diabetics (54,5 por ciento) and 227 non-diabetic (45,5 por ciento). Results: frequency of Pro513 allele was low (1,2 por ciento) and similar en both groups (1,1 por ciento versus 1,3 por ciento for diabetic group and the control one, respectively). Frequency of Gly972Arg polymorphism was of 16,2 por ciento, higher than that reported for most of study populations. There were not significant differences in frequency of Arg972 allele between the diabetic group and the control one (15,4 por ciento versus 17,3 por ciento). Also, there were not changes in glycemia and insulinemia levels associated to presence of polymorphous allele. Conclusions: in present group of Cuban population the above mentioned polymorphous variants are not involved in etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Violence against women by their male intimate partners (IPV) during pregnancy may lead to negative pregnancy outcomes. We examined the role of IPV as a potential risk factor for miscarriage in Guatemala. Our objectives were: (1) To describe the magnitude and pattern of verbal, physical and sexual violence by male intimate partners in the last 12 months (IPV) in a sample of pregnant Guatemalans; (2) To evaluate the influence of physical or sexual IPV on miscarriage as a pregnancy outcome. METHODS: All pregnant women reporting to the maternity of a major tertiary care public hospital in Guatemala City from June 1st to September 30th, 2006 were invited to participate in this cross-sectional study. The admitting physician assessed occurrence of miscarriage, defined as involuntary pregnancy loss up to and including 28 weeks gestation. Data on IPV, social and demographic characteristics, risk behaviours, and medical history were collected by interviewer-administered questionnaire. Laboratory testing was performed for HIV and syphilis. The relationship between IPV and miscarriage was assessed through multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: IPV affected 18% of the 1897 pregnant Guatemalan women aged 15-47 in this sample. Verbal IPV was most common (16%), followed by physical (10%) and sexual (3%) victimisation. Different forms of IPV were often co-prevalent. Miscarriage was experienced by 10% of the sample (n = 190). After adjustment for potentially confounding factors, physical or sexual victimisation by a male intimate partner in the last 12 months was significantly associated with miscarriage (ORadj 1.1 to 2.8). Results were robust under a range of analytic assumptions. CONCLUSIONS: Physical and sexual IPV is associated with miscarriage in this Guatemalan facility-based sample. Results cohere well with findings from population-based surveys. IPV should be recognised as a potential cause of miscarriage. Reproductive health services should be used to screen for spousal violence and link to assistance.
