Surgical practices within veterinary medicine have been improving over time with the development of increasingly less invasive techniques, aimed at reducing pain and faster recovery of the function of operated structures. This report aimed to highlight the benefits due a technique of resection of a simple renal cyst through video laparoscopy. A ten years old canine, female, Golden Retriever had history of apathy. Ultrasound examination found a cortical structure in the right kidney, suggestive of renal cyst. Diagnosis was confirmed and the cyst was drained through percutaneously video-assisted technique, followed by its resection and omentopexy by laparoscopic technique in order to ensure a good healing condition, urine drainage and supply of defense cells. The technique showed no complications during the procedure, less pain in the postoperative period and faster recovery of the patient. Histopathology of the fragment removed from the cyst was performed and the diagnosis of benign epithelial cyst was confirmed, which is the most common form of renal cysts, providing a good prognosis for the patient. There were no complications or signs of recurrence three months after the procedure. Renal cysts occur infrequently in domestic animals and generally do not cause clinical signs, but if in large numbers or considerable size is presented, they can cause chronic kidney disease with systemic clinical signs in addition to renal deformation and abdominal pain. In this case, laparoscopic resection of the simple renal cyst was effective, without complications and preserved the organ's function.

Primary ovarian neoplasms are uncommon in bitches, requiring more accurate diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Females also have steroid-secreting interstitial cells, however, the appearance of the Leydig cell tumor is considered rare. A 12-year-old mongrel bitch showed signs of estrus after prepubertal ovariohysterectomy. Ultrasound evaluation located a mass in the right lateral abdominal region, suggestive of a remaining ovary. During laparoscopic exploration, the mass was identified caudally distant from the right ovarian stump, adhered to the jejunal mesentery. The intestinal segment was apprehended and exteriorized by video-assisted technique, and removal of the tumor was performed associated with enterectomy of the affected segment. Evaluation of the left ovarian stump revealed a 0.5cm diameter cyst that was also removed. Histopathological analysis was suggestive of interstitial cell neoplasia (Leydig cell tumor) and an ovarian epithelial cyst. The Leydig cell tumor is frequently related in males, however, its appearance in bitches is considered uncommon, affecting mainly nonsterile animals. The mass non-adhered to the ovarian stump proves that remnants of ovarian tissue that may be free in the abdominal cavity and may be responsible for the development of the remaining ovary syndrome and neoplasms. The prognosis for ovarian neoplasms without metastasis is favorable, especially when surgical intervention is applied as a therapeutic method. The use of video surgery to assist in the diagnosis and treatment was considered appropriate for the case described, but it must be complemented by histopathological analysis.

RESUMO

Feline Plasmacytic Pododermatitis is an uncommon dermatological disorder that affects one or multiple paw pads and leads to swelling, ulceration, hemorrhage, scaling, erythema, and striation. Its etiopathogenesis is poorly understood, however, an immune-mediated basis is strongly suggested. A two-year-old neutered, mixed breed, male cat was referred to the Veterinary Clinic of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Curitibanos Campus, with a brief clinical history of progressive lesions on palmar and plantar pads for one month. On physical examination, the patient had enlarged popliteal and inguinal lymph nodes, and paw pads with thin, swollen, hyperemic, erythematous, and purple color skin with multiple white striations. Histopathological diagnosis confirmed plasmacytic pododermatitis, and glucocorticoid therapy with prednisolone was prescribed. In the present report, the patient's clinical follow-up was compromised, as the tutor did not perform the prescribed treatment and did not return with the animal for further evaluations.

Background: The metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints are very demanded during high intensity exercises, and may be affected by osteoarthritis, fractures, luxations and rupture of the suspensory apparatus. Thus, arthrodesis maybe indicated to restore joint stability and accelerate the ankylosis process. The most commonly used surgical techniqueshave been associated with postoperative complications, including infection and failure of the implants, so it is importantto develop procedures that are less invasive procedures and promoting stable fixation. Therefore, the aim of this work isto report the use of the modified steel basket technique for metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis in a foal with hyperextensionof the joint due to rupture of the digital flexor muscles.Case: A 2-day-old male foal was admitted to clinical care, presenting multiple cutaneous wounds caused by dogs bites, located in the tarsus and thigh of the hindlimb. The animal presented in standing position and had no difficulty of movement, being initially treated through daily cleaning of the cutaneous wounds and systemic antibiotic therapy. Hyperextension ofthe metatarsophalangeal joint was evidenced after 20 days, being approached through tenotomy and tendon shortening, followed by tenorrhaphy and immobilization for 30 days. Due to the failure of the treatment, it was opted for metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis by modified steel basket technique. The procedure involved the implantation of a steel basket of25.0 mm in diameter x 25.0 mm long in a 24.0 mm hole created on the dorsal surface between the third metacarpal andthe proximal phalanx. The basket was filled with bone extracted from drilling and fixed with two cortical screws at anangle of 25° toward proximoplantar and distoplantar direction. Immobilization of the limb was performed postoperativelywith synthetic plaster cast for 45 days and, due to the persistence of lameness...(AU)

RESUMO

Background: Tendon injuries are common in horses and are commonly associated with lameness and athletic career disruption.Adhesions formed between the tendons and the surrounding tissues compromise the sliding and movement of the structures, compromising their functionality. Therefore, the control of adhesion formation is critical to restore the structural integrity of thetendon, as well as its biomechanical function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of the biosynthetic cellulosemembrane implanted in foals with surgically induced tendinitis of the superficial digital flexor.Materials, Methods & Results: Six healthy foals were used, which underwent tendinitis induction in the superficial digital flexorof the right and left forelimbs. The lesions was induced by local ischemia by crushing the tendon with hemostatic forceps. Thebiosynthetic cellulose membrane was implanted only in the right forelimb, involving the superficial digital flexor tendon in theregion of the ischemia and the left forelimb was used as control. After surgery, both forelimb were immobilized with syntheticplaster cast for 15 days. Ultrasonography was performed in six foals immediately before (M0), at 15° (M1) at and 30° (M2) day,and three were evaluate at 45° (M3) and 60° (M4) day after surgery. Incisional biopsies were performed in three animals on the30° day and in three animals on the 60° day after surgery. Histopathological examination involved the analysis of tissue disorganization, presence and type of inflammatory infiltrate and neovascularization, according to the score of 0 to 3. Ultrasonographyallowed visualization of the membrane, which was characterized as a continuous hyperechoic line at the edges of the tendon at15 days (M1). In addition, at 30 and 45 days after surgery, interruption of the hyperechoic line and reduction of echogenicitywere observed, and no echogenic lines were observed at 60 days after surgery...(AU)

RESUMO

The aim of this pilot test was to test a new self-locking resorbable implant for hilum occlusion during a video-assisted thoracoscopic lung lobectomy in a surviving pig model. Once the thoracic cavity was assessed and structures identified, the right middle lobe and its respective hilum were exposed. The implant was introduced with a semiclosed loop through a working channel and positioned around the pulmonary lobe. Occlusion was performed with a conventional Crile forceps and a laparoscopic Kelly forceps. Lobe section was done with laparoscopic Metzenbaum scissors and tissue removal through the dorsal access. No signs of pneumothorax or bleeding were observed during a 60-day follow-up. Necropsy findings showed minimal pleuritis in caudal access and in the lobar stump. A granulomatous formation was found around a dense, amorphous material, which was identified as remains of a small part of the implant. Histopathological findings showed signs of a chronic healing process without other alterations. The resorbable implant LigaTie appears to exhibit similar handling and application characteristics during surgery as nonsurgical tie wraps. The resorbable implant avoids the uncontrolled substances not suitable for implants of conventional ties. The results of this pilot test suggested the resorbable implant's mechanical properties provided effective tissue support to complete the healing of the pulmonary hilum.
