RESUMO

The objective of this work was to evaluate the predation rates of two genera of Odonata Miathyria Kirby, 1889 and Erythemis Hagen, 1861 in post-larviculture of tilapia with and without availability of Chironomidae. For that, 3 experiments were carried out, the first to analyze which size scale of these two genera would be more efficient in the predation of tilapia and the other 2 experiments with the selected size scales, to analyze the predation rates on tilapia with different Odonata densities, with and without availability of the aquatic insect Chironomidae. For statistical analysis of the data, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied with the Duncan test searching for the means in all experiments. In experiments 2 and 3 a linear regression model was also applied. In experiment 1, there were significant differences between treatments, and in the phase with Miathyria the predation of tilapia post-larvae was higher among odonates that corresponded to the size scale from 7.1 to 9.9 mm and therefore the scale was also selected for the next experiments. For Erythemis, the consumption of tilapia was higher in the size scale between 12.1 to 14,2 mm. In the following experiments, there were significant differences between treatments. With the increase in Odonata densities the predation of the fish was greater. With the availability of Chironomidae, the consumption of tilapia post-larvae decreased. The consumption of Chironomidae was higher than the consumption of fish in experiment 3. Miathyria proved to be more efficient than Erythemis in predation and the use of Chironomidae can be a sustainable alternative for post-larvae predation control on fish farms.(AU)

RESUMO

The increasing losses of original features of many riverine environments and the consequent decline of native aquatic species are now a widely recognized problem. The main river basins of South America have been undergoing constant changes in their communities of fish, with native migratory species disappearing and the rising of sedentary exotic ones. However, few studies report experiments that qualify and/or quantify this correlation. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the predation mortality of two species of fish larvae (native and non-native) regarding their habitat features. The hypothesis that natural features of habitat (aquatic vegetation and water turbidity) controls the survival rates of fish larvae was tested. The experiments highlight the importance of community structure on population dynamics. The native fish larvae showed to be more adapted than the non-native to using the aquatic plants for refuge. The habitat complexity can be closely related to the persistence of native migratory fish species.(AU)

RESUMO

This study analyzed the diet during early developmental stages of Astyanax lacustris (AA),Piaractus mesopotamicus (PM), Megaleporinus obtusidens (MO) and Prochilodus lineatus (PL), under experimentalconditions. Fish larvae, 350 of each species, were stocked separately in 16 fiber-cement tanks (500 L), fromwhich, three larvae of each species were collected every three days, for 36 days. Tanks were fertilized (1.5 gNPK-7: 14: 8) and had 50% of the surface with macrophytes. Larvae were grouped in age classes = I: 5 to11, II: 14 to 20, III: 23 to 29 and IV: 32 to 38 days and, dissected for analysis of the digestive tract.Methodologies of dominance, frequency of occurrence and points of food items were used. For AA andPM larvae, measurements were taken for the number and size of organisms to determine the percentparticipation in biovolume. Changes in diets of larvae in different age classes were found as well as betweendifferent species, with the same age. Rotifers were dominant in the content of digestive tracts of all speciesat Class I, and the larvae diets became more distinct with increasing age, in which AA consumed mainlyrotifers, PM, larger organisms (mainly cladocerans), PL, algae (diatoms as the main item) and PP with amore diversified diet (rotifers, ostracodes and algae). In conclusion, early stages of these species presenteddistinct diets, undergoing remarkable changes in the first 38 days of life.(AU)

RESUMO

Aiming to study the changes in the diet of Astyanax altiparanae in the early developmental stages, in the presence of Eichhornia crassipes (EC) and Lemna sp. (LM), larvae of Astyanax altiparanae were stocked in eight tanks of 900 L (500 ind. tank-1), four with EC and four with LM covering 50% surface. Tanks were inoculated with plankton and received 3.0 g inorganic fertilizer (NPK-7:14:8) and 1.5 g every week. At every three days, three larvae were taken from each tank, fixed in 4% formaldehyde and grouped into four age classes (I: 6 to 12 days, II:15 to 21 days, III:24 to 30 days; IV:33 to 39 days). The analysis of dominance and frequency of occurrence (FO) of food items indicated that, at this stage, A. altiparanae is generalist. In class I, there was a greater dominance and FO of Lecane bulla and Alona sp. in digestive tracts in the presence of both EC and LM, respectively; and larvae started to consume larger organisms, such as Chironomidae, in other age classes with EC. In the presence of LM, Alona sp. was dominant in class II; Chironomidae, in class III and Centropyxis sp., in class IV. Diatoms have greater FO both in EC and in LM. In class III, with EC, Chironomidae had higher FO, as well as Arcella sp. and Scenedesmus spp. with LM. The highest FO in class IV was found for L. bulla and Scenedesmus spp., with EC and LM, respectively. It can be concluded that EC and LM ininfluenced the diet of Astyanax altiparanae, with alterations according to the availability of organisms and increase in age.

RESUMO

Effect of larvae of Astyanax altiparanae (AA), Piaractus mesopotamicus (PM), Leporinus obtusidens (LO) and Prochilodus lineatus (PL) on plankton communities and water quality were evaluated. Twenty 500 L tanks were used into a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications, containing 350 individuals of each species per tank. One treatment control had no larvae (CT). Every six days, were collected periphyton and water to determine the concentrations of chlorophyll and total phosphorus. Plankton samples (20 µm mesh net) were taken every three days. Fish affected plankton communities, which showed lower densities of total zooplankton in AA tanks than in LO tanks. Increased density of rotifers and reduced density of copepods were found in AA, PM and PL tanks in relation to the CT. Higher density of testate amoebae was observed in AA, PM and LO tanks. As to biovolume, higher values for total plankton were registered in the CT and LO tanks compared with AA, PM and PL tanks; higher values for rotifers were observed in PL tanks than in the CT. Copepod biovolume was higher in CT and LO tanks. Biovolume of cladoceran and testate amoebae were not affected. Plankton´s chlorophyll concentration was higher in tanks with fish. Higher concentrations of dissolved oxygen were found in AA and PM tanks. It can be concluded that juveniles of these fish species differently affect the plankton community and chemical parameters of the water.

Klebsiella spp. is a genus of the gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae family. They are found in many environments and are part of the natural microflora of soils, effluents and surface water and in some plants. Klebsiella spp. is an opportunistic agent and mainly attacks subjects hospitalized with severe diseases as well as many fragile animals. This paper reports the occurrence of Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in a nishikigoi carp, Cyprinus carpio, widely used as an ornamental fish in aquaria, for food, and for production of pituitary extracts for induction of reproduction. In a closed system used for the domestic cultivation of ornamental fish, a carp was found with an injury indicative of bacterial infection. A tissue sample from a lesion was triturated, plated on Blood Agar, and incubated at 37 C for 24 hours to confirm and isolate the possible pathogen. Biochemical tests were conducted to identify the strain based on manual methods described in the literature. In accordance with the phenotypic and biochemical tests conducted, Klebsiella pneumoniae was the organism present in the carp lesion
