RESUMO

The current qualitative research study was performed in a psychiatric hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The study aimed to identify RNs' and nursing assistants' (NAs) (N = 21) knowledge regarding different types of admission to psychiatric hospitals established by Brazilian legislation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through content analysis resulting in the following theme: Gaps in the Knowledge of RNs and NAs Regarding the Rules for Admission; and five subthemes: voluntary admission and the requirement of having a responsible person during admission; involuntary admission occurring when the family is the one to hospitalize the patient; involuntary admission is the same as compulsory admission; is there involuntary admission?; and the role of the public attorney in involuntary admissions. Results showed deficits in knowledge about the different types of admissions to psychiatric hospitals. Therefore, policies to promote awareness of the legal framework concerning psychiatric treatment should be developed to enable mental health nurses to support patients' autonomy during involuntary admissions. RESUMO

The objective in this exploratory study is to consider the demand for nursing related projects in the Ethics Committees registered on the website of the National Information System Commission about Ethics in Research Involving Human Beings (SISNEP) between 2003 and 2010. The data were collected in two phases: research projects approved in specific Ethics Committees of Nursing Schools/ Faculties registered for at least four years, and projects whose title contained the keywords Nurse and/or Nursing, approved in general Ethics Committees. In total, 2576 projects were approved in the six Committees analyzed.

RESUMO

There are currently high profile debates about legal and ethical aspects of end of life care and treatment in the U.K. and Brazil. Unlike some other jurisdictions, neither country has legalised assisted dying or euthanasia. We argue that it is timely to consider the issues from the perspectives of an evolving concept in bioethics, that of solidarity.
