Objective: To measure the knowledge, attitude, and preventive practices of parents in regards to their understanding of early childhood caries (ECC) in Al jouf province, Saudi Arabia (KSA). Material and Methods: A cross-sectional oral health survey was conducted among 228 parents, who were selected by stratified cluster sampling. A questionnaire consisting of 10 questions in each domain addressing knowledge, attitude, and preventive practice for ECC was applied. Scoring in the knowledge field included Yes/No/Don't know, while the attitude and practice domains used a 5-point Likert scale. Results: The mean values for knowledge of the respondents was 'Yes' (106.1 ±46.12), 'No' (63.5 ±50.95), and 'Don't know' (58.4 ±23.21); the p-value was p>0.05. The mean values for attitudes of the parents were strongly disagree (49.8 ±33.51), disagree (28 ±15.63), cannot say (47.4 ±20.33), agree (69.4 ±26.57), and strongly agree (33.4 ±30.48); the p-value was p<0.05. The mean values for preventive practices were strongly disagree (23.3 ±25.15), disagree (27.6 ±28.29), cannot say (38.9 ±31.8), agree (84.9 ±28.07), and stronglyagree (53.3 ±38.73); the p-value was <0.05. Conclusion: The parents did not have adequate knowledge of ECC but did have a good attitude and practice towards its prevention.

RESUMO

Heteroblasty, the temporal development of the meristem, can produce diverse leaf shapes within a plant. Gevuina avellana, a tree from the South American temperate rainforest shows strong heteroblasty affecting leaf shape, transitioning from juvenile simple leaves to highly pinnate adult leaves. Light availability within the forest canopy also modulates its leaf size and complexity. Here we studied how the interaction between the light environment and the heteroblastic progression of leaves is coordinated in this species. We used RNA-seq on the Illumina platform to compare the range of transcriptional responses in leaf primordia of G. avellana at different heteroblastic stages and growing under different light environments. We found a steady up-regulation of SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN LIKE (SPL), NAC, YUCCA and AGAMOUS-LIKE genes associated with increases in age, leaf complexity, and light availability. In contrast, expression of TCP, TPR and KNOTTED1 homeobox genes showed a sustained down-regulation. Additionally, genes involved in auxin synthesis/transport and jasmonate activity were differentially expressed, indicating an active regulation of processes controlled by these hormones. Our large-scale transcriptional analysis of the leaf primordia of G. avellana sheds light on the integration of internal and external cues during heteroblastic development in this species.

We present here a detailed investigation of the static and dynamic magnetic behavior of a Mg(0.95)Mn(0.05)Fe(2)O(4) spinel ferrite nanoparticle system synthesized by high-energy ball milling of almost identical particle size distributions ([Formula: see text], 5.1 and 6.0 ± 0.6 nm). The samples were characterized by using x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, dc magnetization and frequency dependent real χ(')(T) and imaginary χ('')(T) parts of ac susceptibility measurements. The zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) magnetization have been recorded in a low field and show a behavior typical of superparamagnetic particles above a temperature of 185 ± 5 K, which is further supported from the temperature dependent Mössbauer measurements. The fact that the blocking temperature calculated from the ZFC magnetization and Mössbauer data are almost similar gives a clear indication of the interparticle interactions among these nanoparticle systems. This is further supported from the FC magnetization curves, which are almost flat below a certain temperature (less than the blocking temperature), as compared with the monotonically increasing behavior characteristics of non-interacting superparamagnetic particles. A shift of the blocking temperature with increasing frequency was observed in the real χ(')(T) and imaginary χ('')(T) parts of the ac susceptibility measurements. The analysis of the results shows that the data fit well with the Vogel-Fulcher law, whereas trials using the Neel-Brown and power law are unproductive. The role of magnetic interparticle interactions on the magnetic behavior, namely superparamagnetic relaxation time and magnetic anisotropy, are discussed.
