RESUMO

Bovine Trichomonosis (BT), a sexually transmitted disease endemic in countries with extensive cattle farming and natural service, is one of the most common causes of reproductive failure. 5-nitroimidazoles and their derivatives are used for its treatment, mainly metronidazole. The emergence of drug resistance mechanisms and treatment failures raise the need to investigate the effectiveness of new active compounds that contribute to parasite control. In this regard, extracts of Lantana camara (Verbenacea) have shown high biocidal potential against isolates of Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania braziliensis in vitro assays, although their effect on Tritrichomonas foetus has not been demonstrated yet. The available information on in vitro susceptibility of trichomonicidal drugs comes from the use of a diversity of methodologies and criteria, especially the observation of parasite motility under the optical microscope to assess their viability. Recently, in our laboratory, the use of flow cytometry has been described for the first time as a rapid and efficient method to evaluate the viability of T. foetus against metronidazole. The present study aimed to evaluate the cytostatic effect of L. camara extracts against T. foetus isolates by flow cytometry. Under aerobic conditions, IC50 values of 22.60 µg/mL were obtained on average. Under anaerobic conditions, the IC50 oscilated around 29.04 µg/mL. The results obtained allowed describing the susceptibility exhibited by these protozoa, being a valuable information for the development of potential BT treatments.

RESUMO

The increase in life expectancy in the western world means that we are faced with patients diagnosed with breast cancer in old age with increasing frequency. The management of these cases is a challenge for the oncologist, who must take into account the conditions associated with advanced age and the lack of trials in this population. In this review, we addressed the incorporation of geriatric assessment methods that may be useful in making decisions, the particular biological characteristics of breast cancer in elderly patients and their treatment in both localized and advanced disease. Finally, we collected recommendations based on scientific evidence regarding the monitoring and life-style after finishing treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Develop a risk prediction model for severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). STUDY DESIGN: Prospectively collected data of infants with birth weight 500 to 1249 g born between 2001 and 2010 in centers from the Neocosur Network were used. Forward stepwise logistic regression model was employed. The model was tested in the 2011 cohort and then applied to the population of VLBWI that received prophylactic indomethacin to analyze its effect in the risk of severe IVH. RESULT: Data from 6538 VLBWI were analyzed. The area under ROC curve for the model was 0.79 and 0.76 when tested in the 2011 cohort. The prophylactic indomethacin group had lower incidence of severe IVH, especially in the highest-risk groups. CONCLUSION: A model for early severe IVH prediction was developed and tested in our population. Prophylactic indomethacin was associated with a lower risk-adjusted incidence of severe IVH.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (SGPT) are sensitive indicators of liver damage. While the TSGOT is also found in other organs, the SGPT is considered an enzyme specific liver. However, some authors state that the TGP can rise also in cases of muscle injury. Furthermore, there are reports in the literature suggesting the association of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) with viral hepatitis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of abnormal liver function tests in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, evaluate possible associationsto liver diseases, determine its relationship with elevation of muscle enzymes and whether these patients have particular clinical and / or serological characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Consecutive patients older than 16 years diagnosed with DM / PM according to Bohan and Peter criteria during 1999-2000 were included. Patients with other connective tissue disease (CTD) were excluded. Demographic data were recorded, characteristics of the disease, laboratory data and elevated liver enzymes and muscle during the course of the disease. Serologic tests were performed for viral hepatitis B and C and confirmatory tests (HBV-DNA and HCV-RNA by PCR). Autoantibodies were determined: ANA (antinuclear antibody) by Hep II, ASMA (anti smooth muscle antibody), AMA (anti-mitochondrial antibodies) and LKM (Liver Kidney Microsomal) by mouse wound, MSA (myositis-specific antibodies) by ELISA. Patients who had abnormal liver tests underwent hepatic ultrasonography. For statistical analysis, descriptive statistics, categorical variables were compared by Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: We included 27 patients, of whom 22 had sufficient data for analysis. Mean age 47.95 years ± 16, 18 female (81.8%) and mean disease duration 8.09 ± 5.6 years. With regard to liver enzymes, 14/22 patients (63.3%) had elevated SGPT and 11/22 (50%) elevated SGOT, 10 of these patients also had elevated SGPT concomitantly. In the 10/15 (66.7%) abdominal ultrasonography showed abnormalities, 8 patients had liver hyperechogenicity, 4 cholelithiasis and 1 patient hepatomegaly. No patient bearing of HBV or HCV. The 8 patients with liver hyperechogenicity matched the 8 patients with isolated elevation of SGPT/SGOT. As for the 10 patients who had both elevated liver enzymes (SGPT and SGOT), only one case could be explained by liver disease (patient ASMA +). However in the 15 cases studied, elevations of SGPT and / or SGOT coincided with outbreaks of myositis, findingconcomitant apparent liver disease in only 9 of them. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, elevated transaminases, including the TGP, was observed concomitantly with the activity of myositis. Approximately half of these cases could not be associated with coexisting liver disease, which could be attributed to injury to muscle secondary to inflammatory myopathy.

RESUMO

The term Podencos refers to a group of dog breeds from Spain and classification in Group 5 of dog breeds by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The aim of this study was to compare traits morphometric breeds of Podencos; Canario, Ibecenco, Andaluz (small, medium and large) and Orito. Ten morphometric variables were measured in 385 animals (245 females and 140 males), head length, muzzle length, height at withers, rump height, body length, head width, rump width, chest depth, chest girth and the shin circumference. Morphostructural variables were more homogeneous in the Podenco Ibicenco and the Podengo Canario, because for many years there were gradually distinctive trait standards for each breed. The discriminate analysis indicated morphostructural differences between all breeds, as reflected in the significant Mahalanobis distance, and confirmed that the hound Orito may be accepted as a different dog population.

Vitronectin (vn) is a cell-adhesive glycoprotein present in blood and extracellular matrix of all vertebrates. In the present study we reported the cDNA cloning of Xenopus laevisvitronectin and its spatial and temporal expression pattern during the embryonic development of this important model organism. The deduced amino acid sequence of Xenopus laevis vn showed 49%, 47% and 43% identity with human, chicken and zebrafish orthologs, respectively, whereas the comparison with Xenopus tropicalis vn presented 85% identity. The structural organization consisting of a somatomedin B domain and two hemopexin-like domains was similar to higher vertebrate vitronectins. The vn transcripts were detected from stage 28 onward. At tadpole stages, vn is expressed in heart, gut derivatives and in the notochord. The protein was detected in heart, liver, foregut, pronephros and notochord at stages 43 and 47 of Xenopus embryos. Our results suggest that vitronectin is developmentally regulated and could participate in embryo organogenesis.

RESUMO

The effects of α-tocopherol and ternatin on the morphology, activation, and growth of goat preantral follicles in vitro cultured, for one or five days, were evaluated. Ovarian fragments were immediately fixed (non-cultured control) or in vitro cultured for one or five days in Minimum Essential Medium (MEM) with or without α-tocopherol or ternatin supplementation, both at concentrations of 5, 10, or 15µM, corresponding to the following treatments: MEM, TOC5, TOC10, TOC 15, TER5, TER10, and TER15. The percentages of morphologically normal preantral follicles in non-cultured ovarian tissue (control) was 73.2 percent and after five days of culture, there was a decrease on these percentages in all treatments (P<0.05) when compared with non-cultured control. Culture of ovarian cortex for five days increased the percentages of follicular activation in all treatments (P<0.05). Ultrastructural analysis did not confirm the integrity of caprine preantral follicles cultured for five days in medium containing antioxidants. This study demonstrated that α-tocopherol and ternatin can promote follicular activation; however, addition of these antioxidants in the tested concentrations reduced the follicular viability after in vitro culture.

INTRODUCTION: Anaemia is a common problem in patients with cancer who receive chemotherapy and is normally associated with a negative impact on patients' quality of life (QOL), poor cancer control and diminished survival. In clinical trials, recombinant human erythropoietin has been shown to correct and prevent anaemia, decrease the need for blood transfusions and improve cancer patients' QOL. METHODS: A retrospective study followed lung cancer patients who received first-line chemotherapy in our hospital in 1998 and in 2005. The incidence of anaemia was analysed, as was the impact of incorporating erythropoietin into the treatment. RESULTS: The incidence of anaemia was 68% (69% of which reported asthenia) in 1998 vs. 54% (60% with asthenia) in 2005. The comparison of anaemia rates (1998 vs. 2005) were grade 1 (16% vs. 32%), grade 2 (36% vs. 16%), grade 3 (16% vs. 5%) and grade 4 (none). Treatment for anaemia included transfusion 52%, intravenous iron 5% and epoetin 4% in 1998. In 2005 anaemia was treated with transfusion 9%, intravenous iron 41%, and epoetin 49%. Median survival (1998 vs. 2005) was 242 days [95% confidence interval (CI) 217-329) vs. 356 days (95% CI 322-382). CONCLUSIONS: Erythropoietin is a valid alternative for cancer patients with anaemia undergoing chemotherapy. It can possibly avoid the need for transfusions without negatively impacting survival.
