Social communication skills, especially eye contact and joint attention, are frequently impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and predict functional outcomes. Applied behavior analysis is one of the most common evidence-based treatments for ASD, but it is not accessible to most families in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as it is an expensive and intensive treatment and needs to be delivered by highly specialized professionals. Parental training has emerged as an effective alternative. This is an exploratory study to assess a parental intervention group via video modeling to acquire eye contact and joint attention. Four graded measures of eye contact and joint attention (full physical prompt, partial physical prompt, gestural prompt, and independent) were assessed in 34 children with ASD and intellectual disability (ID). There was a progressive reduction in the level of prompting required over time to acquire eye contact and joint attention, as well as a positive correlation between the time of exposure to the intervention and the acquisition of abilities. This kind of parent training using video modeling to teach eye contact and joint attention skills to children with ASD and ID is a low-cost intervention that can be applied in low-resource settings.

INTRODUCTION: In critically ill patients, sleep and circadian rhythms are greatly altered. These disturbances have been associated with adverse consequences, including increased mortality. Factors associated with the ICU environment, such as exposure to inadequate light and noise levels during the day and night or inflexible schedules of daily care activities, have been described as playing an essential role in sleep disturbances. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the use of a multifaceted environmental control intervention in the ICU on the quantity and quality of sleep, delirium, and post-intensive care neuropsychological impairment in critically ill patients. METHODS: This is a prospective, parallel-group, randomized trial in 56 critically ill patients once they are starting to recover from their acute illness. Patients will be randomized to receive a multifaceted intervention of environmental control in the ICU (dynamic light therapy, auditory masking, and rationalization of ICU nocturnal patient care activities) or standard care. The protocol will be applied from enrollment until ICU discharge. Baseline parameters, light and noise levels, polysomnography and actigraphy, daily oscillation of plasma concentrations of Melatonin and Cortisol, and questionnaires for the qualitative evaluation of sleep, will be assessed during the study. In addition, all patients will undergo standardized follow-up before hospital discharge and at 6 months to evaluate neuropsychological impairment. DISCUSSION: This study is the first randomized clinical trial in critically ill patients to evaluate the effect of a multicomponent, non-pharmacological environmental control intervention on sleep improvement in ICU patients. The results will provide data about the potential synergistic effects of a combined multi-component environmental intervention in ICU on outcomes in the ICU and long term, and the mechanism of action. This is the first research that extensively compiles all the available scientific literature on the presence of trace metals (TMs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and plastic debris in Chondrichthyan species inhabiting South America (including the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans), providing an insight into Chondrichthyans as bioindicators of pollutants as well as the impacts of pollutant exposure on the organisms. Seventy-three studies were published in South America between 1986 and 2022. While 68.5% focused on TMs, 17.8% on POPs, and 9.6% on plastic debris. Brazil and Argentina were at the top in terms of the number of publications; however, there is an absence of information regarding pollutants for Chondrichthyans in Venezuela, Guyana, and French Guiana. Of the 65 Chondrichthyan species reported, 98.5% belong to the Elasmobranch group, and 1.5% from the Holocephalans. Most studies focused on Chondrichthyans of economic importance, and the most analyzed organs were the muscle and liver. There is a lack of studies on Chondrichthyan species with low economic value and critical conservation status. Due to their ecological relevance, distribution, accessibility, high trophic position, capacity to accumulate high levels of pollutants, and the number of studies published, Prionace glauca and Mustelus schmitii seem to be adequate to serve as bioindicators. For TMs, POPs, and plastic debris there is a lack of studies focusing on the pollutant levels as well as their effect on Chondrichthyans. Future research reporting TMs, POPs, and plastic debris occurrences in Chondrichthyan species are required in order to increase the scarce databases about pollutants in this group, with a clear need for further research on the responses of chondrichthyans to pollutants, as well as making inferences about the potential risks to the ecosystems and human health.

La displasia broncopulmonar (DBP) es la enfermedad crónica más frecuente del recién nacido prematuro. Los avances en su prevención y tratamiento han permitido una mayor sobrevida de prematuros más pequeños, pero su incidencia se ha mantenido estable en el tiempo, con una fisiopatología y presentación clínica que abarca un amplio espectro y que difiere de la DBP descrita originalmente hace más de 50 años. Aún existen controversias en su definición, la que se ha establecido en base al tratamiento, específicamente al requerimiento de soporte respiratorio. Las definiciones más utilizadas son el requerimiento de oxígeno por 28 días y a las 36 semanas de edad gestacional corregida (EGC). Recientemente se ha propuesto definirla en base al requerimiento de ventilación mecánica a las 36 semanas de EGC, lo que identificaría a los prematuros con DBP más grave y mayor probabilidad de complicaciones respiratorias y neurológicas en los 2 primeros años de vida. Nuestro objetivo en la comisión de Neo-SOCHINEP es el de recomendar la definición y clasificación que nos parece más adecuada para identificar a los prematuros portadores de DBP, considerando los aspectos fisiopatológicos, del compromiso de la función pulmonar y consecuencias prácticas de la definición en nuestro medio. También proponemos la definición del requerimiento de oxígeno en el prematuro cuando esta en neonatología, las condiciones e interpretación de la saturometría contínua cuando está pronto al alta y el seguimiento de la oxigenoterapia posterior al alta.


Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most frequent chronic disease of the premature newborn. Advances in its prevention and treatment have allowed a greater survival of smaller preterm infants, but its incidence has remained stable over time, with a pathophysiology and clinical presentation that covers a wide spectrum and differs from the BPD originally described more than 50 years ago. There are still controversies in its definition, which has been established based on the treatment, specifically the requirement of respiratory support. The most used definitions are the oxygen requirement for 28 days and at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA). It has recently been proposed a definition based on the requirement of mechanical ventilation at 36 weeks of PMA, which would identify premature infants with more severe BPD and a greater probability of respiratory and neurological complications in the first 2 years of life. Our objective in the Neo-SOCHINEP commission is to recommend the definition and classification that we believe is most appropriate to identify premature infants with BPD, considering the pathophysiological aspects, the compromised lung function, and practical consequences of the definition in our medium. We also propose the definition of the oxygen requirement in premature infants when they are in neonatology, the conditions and interpretation of continuous saturation when they are soon discharged, and the follow-up of post-discharge oxygen therapy.

Enzyme inks can be inkjet printed to fabricate enzymatic biosensors. However, inks containing enzymes present a low shelf life because enzymes in suspension rapidly lose their catalytic activity. Other major problems of printing these inks are the non-specific adsorption of enzymes onto the chamber walls and stability loss during printing as a result of thermal and/or mechanical stress. It is well known that the catalytic activity can be preserved for significantly longer periods of time and to harsher operational conditions when enzymes are immobilized onto adequate surfaces. Therefore, in this work, horseradish peroxidase was covalently immobilized onto silica nanoparticles. Then, the nanoparticles were mixed into an aqueous ink containing single walled carbon nanotubes. Electrodes printed with this specially formulated ink were characterized, and enzyme electrodes were printed. To test the performance of the enzyme electrodes, a complete amperometric hydrogen peroxide biosensor was fabricated by inkjet printing. The electrochemical response of the printed electrodes was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in solutions containing redox species, such as hexacyanoferrate (III/II) ions or hydroquinone. The response of the enzyme electrodes was studied for the amperometric determination of hydrogen peroxide. Three months after the ink preparation, the printed enzyme electrodes were found to still exhibit similar sensitivity, demonstrating that catalytic activity is preserved in the proposed ink. Thus, enzyme electrodes can be successfully printed employing highly stable formulation using nanoparticles as carriers.

Atlantoraja platana is an oviparous skate endemic to the south-west Atlantic Ocean, and is one of the skate species most exploited by local industrial bottom trawl fisheries. Oviparous elasmobranchs encapsulate their eggs in complex egg cases produced by the oviductal gland (OG). This organ is exclusively present in these fishes and comprises four distinct zones: club, baffle, papillary and terminal. The relative size and structural complexity of these zones correlate with mode of reproduction. Glycans are known to play major roles in reproduction so their distribution in each zone of the OG could explain the functional multiplicity of the gland in skates, but this topic has not been previously investigated. In this study, morphological, histochemical and lectin-histochemical analysis revealed various novel aspects of A. platana's OG. The club, papillary and terminal zones positively stained for periodic acid Schiff's reagent (PAS) and Alcian Blue (AB), indicating the presence of neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides. However, the buffle zone was negative for PAS and AB stains, but was positive for all the lectins used. Each zone of the OG had a characteristic pattern of glycan expression. Finally, we confirmed the presence of sperm but not sperm storage. This is the first lectin-histochemical study of the OG in chondrichtyan fish and it has proven to be an important tool to understand some of the mechanisms of fertility and reproductive success in economic important species such as A. platana.

Introduction: Wilms' tumor is a malignant renal neoplasm that frequently occurs in children during the first decade of life. clinically, it is a rapidly growing abdominal mass that causes low back pain and hematuria. computerized axial tomography or nuclear magnetic resonance are fundamental for its diagnosis, and chemotherapy and surgery have become first-choice treatments. after diagnosis, the majority of treatment plans involve the administration of antineoplastic drugs, whose side effects may include mucositis, candidiasis, xerostomia, caries, and worsen other previously diagnosed lesions, regardless of the organ affected by the tumor. treatment is more effective if provided by a multidisciplinary team in which the dentist plays a significant role in the implementation of an integral oral care protocol. in the present study, the management of a pediatric patient under antineoplastic treatment for Wilms' tumor is reported. case report: a four-year-old female patient diagnosed with Wilms' tumor, who required antineoplastic treatment. she had temporary dentition with early childhood caries, irreversible pulpal lesions and agenesis of teeth 72, 82, and the germ of tooth 42. the patient received modeling based behavior management therapy, prophylactic oral hygiene, and restoration of teeth affected by caries. to present this case, the "CARE" guidelines were used. conclusion: poor oral health status prior to cancer therapy directly affects the quality of life and the treatment of a patient, increasing the risks of local or systemic infections. as such evaluation and dental treatment before antineoplastic therapy is important to prevent oral complications and lesions.

RESUMO

The presence of follicular cellular processes (FCP) that cross the zona pellucida, has been recorded in the ovarian follicles of Callorhinchus callorhynchus. This constitutes the first report describing the presence of these structures in a species of the Holocephali. Considering that FCPs have only previously been reported in the Selachii, these findings suggest that FCPs could have been lost by the Batoidea after their divergence, around 280 M B.P.

Simple and low-cost observational-tools to detect symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are still necessary. The OERA is a new assessment tool to screen children eliciting observable behaviors with no substantial knowledge on ASD required. The sample was 99 children aged 3-10: 76 with ASD and 23 without ASD (11/23 had intellectual disability). The 13 remained items exhibited high interrater agreement and high reliability loaded onto a single latent trait. Such model showed excellent fit indices evaluated via confirmatory factor analysis and no item showed differential function in terms of age/sex/IQ. A cutoff of five points or higher resulted in the highest sensitivity (92.75) and specificity (90.91) percentages. OERA is a brief, stable, low-cost standardized observational-screening to identify ASD children.

El liquen aureus es una dermatosis purpúrica pigmentaria infrecuente. Presentamos un caso inusual por su edad pediátrica y por la presencia de lesiones múltiples con patrón zosteriforme. Se trata de un niño de 10 años con máculas parduzcas, menores de 1 cm, con bordes definidos y superficie liquenificada, en la cara interna de la pierna izquierda con distribución zosteriforme, asintomáticas, de tres meses de evolución. La biopsia mostró infiltrado en banda en la dermis superior con linfocitos, histiocitos, hematíes y hemosiderina. Se diagnosticó liquen aureus zosteriforme y se trató con furoato de mometasona tópico durante 3 semanas con aclaramiento parcial. Las lesiones permanecen 2 años después y han aparecido nuevas en el tobillo ipsilateral. Debemos plantearnos el diagnóstico diferencial con otras dermatosis purpúricas pigmentarias crónicas y la variante purpúrica pigmentaria de la micosis fungoide. Existen muchas opciones terapéuticas e, incluso sin tratamiento, suelen desaparecer, por lo que son necesarios estudios que recopilen más evidencias.


ABSTRACT Lichen aureus is a rare pigmented purpuric dermatosis. We present anunusual case because of the pediatric age and the great number of lesions with zosteriform distribution. He is a 10-year-old boy, with a brownish, smaller than 1 cm, sharp edges, lichenified surface, asymptomatic macule, over the inner aspect of the left leg with a zosteriform distribution. The histology showed a band-like inflammatory infiltrate in the superficial dermis, composed of lymphocytes, histiocytes, erythrocytes and haemosiderin. He was diagnosed with zosteriform lichen aureus and was treated with topical mometasone furoate during 3 weeks resulting in partial lightening of the macules. Lesions have remained 2 years later, and new ones have appeared in the ipsilateral ankle. We must consider differential diagnosis with other pigmented purpuric dermatitis and pigmented purpuric mycosis fungoides. There are many therapeutic options and it tends to disappear spontaneously, so new studies are necessary
