RESUMO

In this study, we analyzed the altitudinal distribution and body condition of the juvenile migratory fish Megaleporinus obtusidens and Salminus brasiliensis in the Uruguay River, a South American subtropical river. We used the presence/absence data and condition factor (K) of juveniles as indicators to try to characterize some recruitment patterns of migratory fish in the main channel of the Uruguay River. Gillnet sampling was conducted during two reproductive years, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 (November and March of each reproductive year), in three Uruguay River stretches at different levels of altitude. The nets remained in the water for 10-12 hours per night or day for 10 days during each field trip (NOV-15, MAR-16, NOV-16, and MAR-17). The abundance of M. obtusidens juveniles were similar between the two reproductive years, whereas S. brasiliensis capture was higher during the 2015-2016 reproductive year. The probability of finding M. obtusidens juveniles in the Uruguay River was negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with the altitudinal gradient of the sampling points, as shown by the GLM model. For S. brasiliensis, the logit model indicated a non-significant probabilistic relationship (p > 0.05) between the presence of juveniles of this fish species and the altitude gradient. Regarding the body condition of juveniles, the water quality of the sampling points did not affect the juvenile condition factor for either species; however, a positive relationship (p < 0.05) was found with the water level for both species, even with an adjusted R2 of 0.13 for M. obtusidens and 0.48 to S. brasiliensis. Altitude gradient and water level were factors that may affect the juvenile distribution and body condition of these species, respectively, in the Uruguay River. Therefore, this information can be used in hydropower generation policies to conserve migratory fish populations in the Uruguay River Basin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy in recent decades has increased the prevalence of chronic diseases in the population, requiring an approach to new health topics, such as discussions on quality of life and expectations about death and dying. The concept of advance directives (ADs) gives individuals the opportunity to make known their decisions about the treatments they would like to receive at the end of life. Despite the recognition of relevance in clinical practice, the applicability of the concept presents challenges, including establishing the appropriate prognosis for each patient and the ideal time to approach the patient. Some prognostic tools were developed, such as the surprise question (SQ): "Would you be surprised if your patient died in 12 months?", which is used in some clinical settings to predict patient deaths and to make decisions regarding ADs. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the behavior of second-year resident physicians (PGY-2) when the SQ was applied. METHOD: In our observational study, from July 1, 2016, to February 28, 2017, (PGY-2) in the Internal Medicine Residency Program (IMRP) applied SQ to all patients with multiple and varied chronic no communicable comorbidities, who were followed up at the general medicine outpatient clinic (GMOC) of a tertiary university hospital in São Paulo- Brazil. The frequency of the outcome (death or non-death within 12 months) was analyzed by correlating it with the clinical data (impact of the studied variables). RESULTS: Eight hundred forty patients entered the study. Fitfty-two of them (6.2%) died within one year. PGY-2 predicted that two hundred and fourteen patients (25.5% of total) would die within a year (answer No to SQ), of which, 32 (14.9%) did so. The correct residents' prognosis for the subgroup of 626 patients (answer "Yes" to SQ) was NPV = 96.8% (CI = 95.4%-98.2%) and PPV = 14.9% (CI 10.1%-19, 6%). Answering "Yes" to SQ correlated negatively to addressing AD while the outcomes death and the answer No to SQ were positively correlated, according to the number of comorbidities. CONCLUSION: The SQ, in addition to care, contributed to health education, communication and care planning shared by the doctor and patient.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of essential oil (EO) from fresh leaves of Psidium rufum. The EO was extracted by hydrodistillation and identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Antioxidant activity was determined by ß-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation system, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and iron reduction methods. Hydrocarbon sesquiterpenes were the predominant class, indicating 1,8 cineole, α-longipinene as major. The EO was tested against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 2,500 µg/mL and MBC = 20,000 µg/mL); Enterococcus faecalis (MIC = 2,500µg/mL and MBC > 20,000µg/mL) and Escherichia coli (MIC > 20,000µg/mL and MBC > 20,000µg/mL). The EO showed antioxidant potential due to ß-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation system, with 76.63% of oxidation inhibition (1.0mg/mL) and due to the iron reduction power (5,38 µmol Fe 2+ /mg sample). The results are promising in recommending this species for the development of food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

O OE foi testado contra as bactérias Staphylococcus aureus e Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CIM = 2,500µg/mL e CBM = 20.000µg/mL); Enterococcus faecalis (CIM=2,500µg/mL e CBM > 20.000µg/mL) e Escherichia coli (CIM > 20.000µg/mL e CBM > 20.000µg/mL).

A two-year old mare was referred to the veterinary hospital because of an increase in the volume of the head on the frontal and left side as well as dyspnoea. Radiographic examination showed an osseous radiopaque spherical mass, with a granular aspect, affecting the left frontal, maxillary, and nasal bones. A frontal sinusotomy was performed, and the frontal sinus was found to be totally obliterated by a granular, yellowish, and hard mass containing multiple spicules. Histologically, it was a multilobulated osseous neoplasia diagnosed as a multilobular osseous tumour. Because of poor prognosis, the animal was euthanized. Necropsy showed that the left nasal cavity was totally effaced as were the nasal sinuses and that the nasal turbinate disappeared because of the hard, yellowish, and granular mass measuring 20 × 14 × 14 cm that surrounded the molar teeth and extended to the cribriform plate. This tumour, which was described only once in horses, is more frequently observed in older dogs' skulls, and must be considered as a differential diagnosis in horses with sinonasal diseases.

The malignant adenomyoepithelioma is a rare mammary tumor in women and uncommon in cats with only one report in this species. In this case report, the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of six cases of malignant adenomyopithelioma in the feline mammary gland are described. Microscopic evaluation of tumors showed dense cellular neoplastic proliferation, composed of malignant myoepithelial and epithelial cells, formed by varied arrangements and presenting papillary, tubular and solid nest proliferation. Immunohistochemistry was performed for markers Ki67, Cox-2, RE, RP, p63 and HER-2. All cases were positive for p63, confirming the myoepithelial nature of neoplastic cells. The diagnosis of malignant adenomyopithelioma was made possible through the association between histopathological characteristics and immunohistochemical results.(AU)

RESUMO

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a pathobiont, a member of human microbiota that can change from commensal to pathogen, causing a large spectrum of diseases. This study assessed virulence determinants of 32 GBS isolates recovered from different clinical sources associated with asymptomatic and symptomatic clinical outcomes that present distinct capsular types and antimicrobial resistance profiles. The ability of a unique strain to colonize and cause infection in different subjects was also evaluated. By PFGE analysis, it was observed that a given strain could be associated with both asymptomatic and symptomatic outcomes. Cell wall anchor proteins ß and alpha C encoding genes (bac and bca, respectively) were detected in all capsular type Ib isolates. bca was more frequent among asymptomatic outcome-related isolates, as well as high expression of ß-hemolysin/cytolysin (ß-H/C). Symptomatic outcome-related isolates produced strong biofilm more frequently. All bacterial isolates recovered from urine were strong biofilm producers. In growth experiments, asymptomatic outcome-related isolates grew faster after 2 h until the end of the log phase. Taken together, these findings show virulence genotypic and phenotypic features of GBS from distinct sources, which may be helpful to understand their pathogenic potential and predict different clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

Chagas disease is a major health concern in Latin America. Ventricular arrhythmia (VA) is a hallmark of Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCM), associated with worse prognosis. The present study aimed to verify the association between myocardial mechanical dispersion (MD) and ventricular arrhythmogenicity in CCM. In a cross-sectional study, 77 patients (55.8 ± 10.4 years) with CCM were evaluated. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) and MD were assessed by echocardiography, derived from the speckle tracking technique. Myocardial MD was measured from the onset of the Q/R wave on electrocardiogram to the peak longitudinal strain in 16 segments of the left ventricle. Frequency and complexity of ventricular extrasystoles (VES) were assessed by dynamic electrocardiography. The density and complexity of VES and the presence of non-sustained ventricular tachycardias (NSVTs) increase as MD increases. In logistic regression, MD was the only variable associated with the presence of paired VES and ventricular bigeminy. In addition, both MD and GLS were associated with the presence of NSVT (both, p < 0.01), and MD was independently associated with NSVT (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.004-1.201, p = 0.031). In CCM, MD is associated with a higher density and complexity of VES, including NSVT.

RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity and toxicological parameters of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives PH151 and PH153 using alternative animal models, to understand their behaviour when subjected to in vivo experiments. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used Toll-deficient Drosophila melanogaster to test the protective effect of compounds against Candida albicans infection. Toxicological parameters were investigated in chicken and zebrafish embryos. PH151 and PH153 showed low toxicity and the treated flies with these compounds had a significantly higher survival rate than untreated flies after 7 days of infection. The compounds did not cause interruption of chicken embryogenesis. Zebrafish embryos exposed to compounds showed dose-dependent toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: The data supported the potential of PH151 and PH153 for the treatment of systemic candidiasis and demonstrated to be appropriate drug candidates for further studies using mammalian models. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The increased incidence of Candida infections resistant to antifungals currently available requires acceleration of the discovery of new agents with properties of inhibiting this fungal pathogen. In this study, we have described the antifungal potential and toxicity of two 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives using in vivo alternative models, and the results confirm their potential to be developed as new drug candidates.

RESUMO

AIMS: Depression is more prevalent in people with diabetes, and is associated with worse diabetes outcomes. Depression in diabetes is more treatment resistant, and as underlying mechanisms are unknown, development of more effective treatment strategies is complicated. A biopsychosocial model may improve our understanding of the pathophysiology, and therewith help improving treatment options. METHODS: Diabetes was diagnosed according to American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria and a current depressive episode according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), based on the Clinical Interview Schedule Revised (CIS-R). From the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil), we included 455 participants without diabetes with a current depressive episode and 10 900 without either diabetes or a current depressive episode. Furthermore, 2183 participants had diabetes alone and 106 had both diabetes and a current depressive episode. Variable selection was based on their relationship with depression and/or diabetes. Multinomial multivariate logistic regression was used to determine how the models differed between participants with and without diabetes. RESULTS: A current depressive episode in diabetes was related to being older and female, having poorer education, financial problems, experiencing discrimination at work, home and school, higher waist circumference, albumin to creatinine ratio and insulin resistance, and the presence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. In non-diabetes, a current depressive disorder was related to being female, not being black, low income, psychological and social factors, non-current alcohol use, lower HDL cholesterol, higher insulin resistance and the presence of cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS: A current depressive episode in the presence compared with the absence of diabetes was related more to biological than to psychosocial factors.
