RESUMO

The Breast Cancer Revealed initiative was designed and conducted to know the status of breast cancer at each point of breast cancer care, through i) prevention, ii) detection, iii) diagnosis, iv) treatment, and iv) the capacity of our health systems. The expert panel from 11 Latin American countries identified several strategies and proposed high impact priorities, including implementation of prevention policies, improve primary healthcare capacity for breast cancer screening, have adequate infrastructure to make effective and timely diagnoses, have a multidisciplinary team in the treatment process, access to a variety of treatments for all types of patients, have a coordinated and articulated system from primary care to specialized hospital. In a region with limited resources, prioritization in high-impact strategies for breast cancer control could lead to improved clinical outcomes and quality of life for our patients.

Abstract Prader-Willi syndrome in a multisystem disorder; it is characterized in childhood by hypotonia, feeding difficulties, developmental delay and genital hypoplasia. In adolescence and adulthood, the problem focuses on behavioral changes, the absence of satiety and mild or moderate mental retardation. Its early diagnosis requires a high clinical suspicion and special studies (methylation studies and fluorescent in situ hybridization). An early detection reduces the morbidity and mortality of patients. There is a clear need for a multidisciplinary approach to facilitate early diagnosis and optimize management and treatment to improve quality of life. There are six cases of SPW that are followed in the Medical Specialties Unit; we report them in order to know the prevalence of PWS, since at present there is no record documenting it.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The C allele of c.-94C>G polymorphism of the delta-sarcoglycan gene was associated as a risk factor for coronary spasm in Japanese patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). AIM: We evaluated whether the c.-94C>G polymorphism can be a risk factor for HCM in Mexican patients. METHODS: The polymorphism was genotyped and the risk was estimated in 35 HCM patients and 145 healthy unrelated individuals. Data of this polymorphism reported in Mexican Amerindian populations were included. RESULTS: The C allele frequency in HCM patients was higher with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.37, and the risk for the CC genotype increased to 5.0. The analysis with Mexican Amerindian populations showed that the C allele frequency was significantly higher in HCM patients with an OR of 2.96 and for CC genotype the risk increased to 7.60. CONCLUSIONS: The C allele of the c.-94C>G polymorphism is a risk factor for HCM, which is increased by the Amerindian component and can play an important role in the etiology and progression of disease in Mexican patients.
