RESUMO

Abstract The southern distribution of the Broad-snouted Caiman (Caiman latirostris Daudin 1802) in Argentina occurs in Santa Fe Province, where its population has been under management by "Proyecto Yacaré" since 1990. From 1997 to 2016, we captured 77 nesting female Broad-snouted Caimans in Santa Fe Province. Our results suggest that previously defined size classes for Broad-snouted Caiman do not adequately describe the reproductively mature female segment of the population. Here we propose to change size ranges for general size classes for Broad-snouted Caiman. In addition, we have observed that reintroduced reproductive females by Proyecto Yacaré represent about 32% of captured females. These results indicate that reintroduced females by the management program are surviving and reproducing in the wild at least up to 20 years.

The Piracicaba River basin is considered the most disturbed river basin in the state of São Paulo. Considerable amounts of agricultural residues are seasonally drained into the river, and the region is also highly urbanized and industrialized with an incipient sewage treatment system. The presence of heavy metals has been previously reported for the water and riverbed in Piracicaba river basin. In this study we evaluated 13 heavy metals in the blood of 37 Geoffroy's side-necked turtles, Phrynops geoffroanus, from Piracicaba River and Piracicamirim Creek, one of its tributaries. Blood levels of As, Co, Cr, Se and Pb varied among sites, whereas Sn varied between males and females. However, no obvious pathology was detected. Serum level of Cu (2,194 ng g(-1)) and Pb (1,150 ng g(-1)) found in this study are the highest ever described for any reptile; however, no clinical symptoms have been detected in the present study. There is no information about the time scale of such contamination, which could be currently subclinical and yet lead to a breakdown in the population reproductive success in a few years. Based on the present study, legal enforcement is urged in order to locate and extirpate heavy metal sources in the Piracicaba River basin. In addition, monitoring should include humans and commercial fish consumed in local markets.

RESUMO

The composition and morphology of bones implanted with stainless steel (316L-SS) and a metal alloy made of zinc, aluminum, and copper (Zinalco) are compared. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results show that with time Zinalco is corroded and zinc, aluminum, and copper diffuse into the osseous tissue, promoting nonhomogeneous bone. Instead, 316L-SS does not incorporate into bone, and the bone recovers homogeneously at a lower speed.

RESUMO

In this study, cultures of human lymphocytes were exposed for 48 h to aqueous suspensions of Zinalco, with different times of corrosion, to test the biocompatibility of this alloy and support its use in medical implants. The results show that the Zinalco concentrations assessed affect the mitotic index (MI) and some also increase the length of DNA migration measured in the comet assay in a significant manner; none of them showed clastogenic nor aneugenic effects. The authors conclude that Zinalco may be considered as an alternative biomaterial and suggest its use for short-term implants.

RESUMO

The practice of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty has shown that the major complications are acute dissection as well as suboptimal results and restenosis. The effort to reduce these complications has led to create an intravascular device called Stent. The technology is complex and very expensive, for this reason we designed and made a new model of stent named SAQ. We introduce: The methodology of development, fabrication and modifications of a new intravascular device Stent SAQ. The results obtained in coronary arteries of ex vivo hearts of pigs and humans. The results in two model of animals, rabbit aorta and peripheral arteries in dogs. This investigation at this phase, shows satisfactory properties of SAQ which is secure and effective, with similar properties to the stents in use.

RESUMO

Two serotypes of bovine group A rotaviruses were demonstrated by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in 20 of 171 faecal samples collected from diarrhoeic calves in two dairy farms in Venezuela. By serotyping ELISA using G and P serotype-specific monoclonal antibodies, bovine rotaviruses (BRV) circulating on one farm were identified as serotype G6, while BRVs circulating on the other farm were identified as serotype G10. Only one BRV (033) could be successfully isolated in MA104 cells, and the nucleotide sequences of the VP7 and the VP8* trypsin-cleavage product of the VP4 were determined. Cross-neutralization tests and comparative sequence analysis showed that BRV 033 belonged to serotype G6 and genotype P1. This is the first report of BRVs identified in Venezuela.
