RESUMO

The testudines are members of the Reptilia class, they are ectothermic and differ from other reptiles by the presence of the shell, which covers most of their bodies. Shell fractures are common in these animals and can occur due to several factors, mainly trauma. This paper aims to report the use of a prosthesis in a red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius). An adult female weighing 2.45 kg was sent to the Setor de Animais Silvestres of Veterinary Hospital of Universidade de Brasília. The specimen presented a carapace fracture caused by compress of garbage truck. Even after the healing of the lesion, there was persistence communication between the celomatic cavity and the environment, which caused recurrent pneumonia. After stabilization of the patient and treatment of infections, an adhesive cover was placed to isolate the cellomic cavity, which was changed periodically. Moreover, it was decided to make a prosthesis with acrylic resin, since it was not feasible to perform the repair by conventional methods. The method was satisfactory in the sealing of the carapace and the animal was monitored for a month without showing signs of pneumonia or any other complications.

RESUMO

Understanding the effects of atrazine exposure on embryo development in oviparous animals may provide important data regarding the impacts of agrochemical use on wildlife and the ecosystem. This study set out to determine the effects of embryonic atrazine exposure on the development of osseous and cartilaginous components of scleral ossicles in Podocnemis expansa. Eggs were collected at the Environmental Protection Area Meandros do Rio Araguaia, Brazil, and artificially incubated in sand treated with solutions containing 2, 20 or 200 µg/L of atrazine. Sixty embryos were collected per treatment throughout the incubation period. Embryos were diaphanized with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and stained with Alizarin Red S and Alcian blue (bone and cartilage tissue respectively). Scleral ossicles were then counted and examined for skeletal abnormalities at different stages of embryonic development. Scleral ossicle counts were significantly reduced in P. expansa embryos treated with 200 µg/L atrazine solution. Rudimentary ossicles and gaps were also noted in embryos exposed to atrazine concentrations of 2 µg/L or 200 µg/L. Findings of this study emphasize the relevance of ecotoxicological investigations in determining the impacts of agrochemicals on native fauna.

RESUMO

The present study aims to report a transfusion therapy in a juvenile Myrmecophaga tridactyla. The patient had a chronic nonregenerative anemia associated with underdevelopment. This therapy was considered after a severe worsening of the clinical condition and laboratorial tests, in which severe anemia was confirmed, with no signs of recovery. The blood used was donated by a clinically healthy adult male of the same species, raised in captivity. The procedure was performed according to medical practice for small animals, since veterinary medicine reports described for xenarthrans are scarce. The result was satisfactory, with absence of late transfusion reactions and an improvement of the patient's overall condition, which demonstrates the possibility of using blood transfusion in anteaters as a therapeutic option.(AU)

The purpose of this study was to isolate bacteria found in the oral cavity of healthy Bothrops atrox and in snakes with stomatitis. The area around the snake fang sheaths were swabbed and the samples were placed in Stuart transport medium, and then seeded on blood agar and XLD agar. Gram staining and catalase and mannitol tests were performed to identify Gram positive bacteria, while biochemical screening with Rugai-lysine medium was used to identify Gram negative bacteria. Proteus spp. (37.5%), Escherichia coli (25%), Citrobacter spp. (18.76%), Serratia spp. (9.37%) and Enterobacter spp. (9.37%) were isolated from healthy snakes, while Escherichia coli (26.31%), Citrobacter spp. (21.05%), Proteus spp. (15.78%), Salmonella (10.52%), and Staphylococcus spp. (26.31 %) were isolated from snakes with stomatitis. Staphylococcus spp. in healthy snakes and in animals with stomatitis differed significantly, suggesting that this microorganism is associated with cases of stomatitis in Bothrops atrox.

An adult exemplar of Boa constrictor with a history of overthrowing was send to the Veterinary Hospital. Clinical and radiographic examinations identified the presence of a dislocation in the third middle of the spine. The patient was submitted to a surgical correction of the lesion, which evaluated the effectiveness of a variation of the modified technique of segmental spinal fixation. The segment was stabilized by fixing plastic plates in the form of hemicerclage in the vertebral bodies, with nylon n.0, and tissue synthesis completed the procedure. Postoperatively, it was instituted antibiotic therapy, daily curatives and space restrictions until the complete healing of the wound. The variation of the technique has proved to be safe and effective for the snake of this study, promoting the realignment and stabilization of the anatomical vertebral segment.
