RESUMO

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) has recently gained importance in the medical industry, especially in surgical specialties. It uses different techniques and materials based on patients' needs, which allows bioprofessionals to design and develop unique pieces using medical imaging provided by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Therefore, the Department of Biology and Medicine and the Department of Physics and Engineering, at the Bioastronautics and Space Mechatronics Research Group, have managed and supervised an international cooperation study, in order to present a general review of the innovative surgical applications, focused on anatomical systems, such as the nervous and craniofacial system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, genitourinary system, and musculoskeletal system. Finally, the integration with augmented, mixed, virtual reality is analyzed to show the advantages of personalized treatments, taking into account the improvements for preoperative, intraoperative planning, and medical training. Also, this article explores the creation of devices and tools for space surgery to get better outcomes under changing gravity conditions.

RESUMO

Objective: To assess the adherence to a set of evidence-based recommendations to support mental health during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its association with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Methods: A team of health workers and researchers prepared the recommendations, formatted into three volumes (1: COVID-19 prevention; 2: Healthy habits; 3: Biological clock and sleep). Participants were randomized to receive only Volume 1 (control), Volumes 1 and 2, Volumes 1 and 3, or all volumes. We used a convenience sample of Portuguese-speaking participants over age 18 years. An online survey consisting of sociodemographic and behavioral questionnaires and mental health instruments (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9] and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 [GAD-7]) was administered. At 14 and 28 days later, participants were invited to complete follow-up surveys, which also included questions regarding adherence to the recommendations. A total of 409 participants completed the study - mostly young adult women holding university degrees. Results: The set of recommendations contained in Volumes 2 and 3 was effective in protecting mental health, as suggested by significant associations of adherence with PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores (reflecting anxiety and depression symptoms, respectively). Conclusion: The recommendations developed in this study could be useful to prevent negative mental health effects in the context of the pandemic and beyond.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence of how metabolic syndrome (MS) affects sympathovagal balance responses to acute physical effort (APE) and autonomic stimulation (AS). This study aimed to evaluate the heart rate variability (HRV) responses to the combined APE and AS challenges. METHODS: Fourteen subjects (8 men; 49.15 ± 8.67 years) divided into two groups: 7 healthy volunteers [control group (CG)] and 7 patients with MS. Sympathovagal balance [low frequency (LF)/high frequency (HF) ratio] was accessed by HRV through the beat-to-beat heart rate (HR) electrocardiogram. Other variables analyzed were as follows: HR, RR-interval variance (VAR/ms2), LF and HF normalized units (un). The APE consisted of a 30-min walk at 65%-75% of the age-predicted maximal HR. The AS was achieved by changing from the supine to standing position (activity orthostatic position). RESULTS: At rest, all HRV variables differ with on MS, but after APE and AS LF (nu) and HF (nu) become similar to the CG. However, the LF/HF ratio responses to the AS were significantly different after APE, but only in the MS (CG rest: 367% ± 59% vs. recovery 495% ± 116%, P > 0.05; MS rest: 316% ± 88% vs. recovery: 665% ± 165%; P = 0.045). Comparing the difference between AS in rest and recovery (ΔAS = rest - recovery), the LF/HF ratio was notably higher in the MS group (CG: 94% ± 29% vs. MS: 415% ± 76%; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The APE and AS induced by body posture changes activated a clear distinction in sympathovagal balance response in MS.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth responses of various Eucalyptus and Corymbia species subjected to different intensities of simulated hypergravity relative to the control. A centrifuge was used to simulate hypergravity. It was developed and built at the Centro de Microgravidade of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Seeds of five Eucalyptus and one Corymbia species (E. grandis, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus benthamii, Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus dunnii, and C. maculata) were placed on moist germination paper in plastic containers and rotated at speeds simulating 5 Gz and 7 Gz for different lengths of time. Hypergravity technology significantly increased seedling production (diameter, height, and survival at 120 days) in nurseries. In E. globulus, the effects of hypergravity were significant at 7 Gz at all lengths of time (from 1 d to 9 days). Effects of hypergravity were significant in both E. benthamii and E. grandis at 7 Gz and 8 h exposure. Therefore, simulated hypergravity could be used in performance tests of Eucalyptus seedlings in early stages of development.(AU)

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate symptoms of stress and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in air traffic control (ATC) officers in Brazil. METHODS: Fifty-two ATC officers participated, based at three air traffic control units, identified as A, B and C. Stress symptoms were assessed using the Lipp Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults, and EDS by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. RESULTS: The sample mean age was 37 years, 76.9% of whom were male. Excessive daytime sleepiness was identified in 25% of the ATC officers, with 84.6% of these based at air traffic control unit A, which has greater air traffic flow, operating a 24-hour alternating work shift schedule. A total of 16% of the ATC officers had stress symptoms, and of these, 62% showed a predominance of physical symptoms. CONCLUSION: The high percentage of ATC officers with EDS identified in group A may be related to chronodisruption due to night work and alternating shifts.

Abstract Introduction Skateboarding is one of the most popular cultures in Brazil, with more than 8.5 million skateboarders. Nowadays, the discipline of street skating has gained recognition among other more classical sports and awaits its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. This study aimed to explore the state-of-the-art for inertial measurement unit (IMU) use in skateboarding trick detection, and to develop new classification methods using supervised machine learning and artificial neural networks (ANN). Methods State-of-the-art knowledge regarding motion detection in skateboarding was used to generate 543 artificial acceleration signals through signal modeling, corresponding to 181 flat ground tricks divided into five classes (NOLLIE, NSHOV, FLIP, SHOV, OLLIE). The classifier consisted of a multilayer feed-forward neural network created with three layers and a supervised learning algorithm (backpropagation). Results The use of ANNs trained specifically for each measured axis of acceleration resulted in error percentages inferior to 0.05%, with a computational efficiency that makes real-time application possible. Conclusion Machine learning can be a useful technique for classifying skateboarding flat ground tricks, assuming that the classifiers are properly constructed and trained, and the acceleration signals are preprocessed correctly.

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the photo-electrocardiogram (photo-ECG), as an alternative tool to enable remote formative second opinion in cardiology. Methods: Fifty paper electrocardiograms (ECGs) were photographed two times, the first using a Canon digital camera, 0.3 megapixel resolution, and the second using a Nokia mobile phone integrated camera, 2.0 megapixel resolution, resulting in 100 Photo-ECGs. A pilot study was responsible for determining the acquisition method. The 100 Photo-ECGs were randomized, encrypted and sent by e-mail to a remote cardiologist, while the 50 paper ECGs were delivered to him in person, without randomization. Gender and age were the only patient information made available to the specialist. Results: Data analysis demonstrated a disagreement in 14 of 50 interpretations (28%) when comparing paper ECGs to the Canon camera photo-ECGs and in 13 of 50 interpretations (26%) when comparing paper ECGs to the Nokia camera photo-ECGs. The Kappa test revealed a fair agreement (Kappa=0.356) between interpretations when comparing the original ECGs to their respective photo-ECGs for both camera devices. Conclusion: The concordance between photo-ECGs and original tracings demonstrated that the method described herein has the potential for use as a tool to assist clinical practice, provided that the acquisition of photo-ECGs is adapted so as to improve exam images. Only with good to very good concordance between the original ECGs and photo-ECGs will remote formative second opinion be possible, giving better diagnostic and therapeutic options...
