RESUMO

Olixon Cameron, 1887 is a genus of solitary wasps belonging to Rhopalosomatidae with 28 species worldwide, all of which are distinct being brachypterous and having the inner eye margins straight. In this paper, we describe Olixon pantanensis Bulbol, Bartholomay & Somavilla sp. nov., based on a male from the Brazilian Pantanal biome and provide new distribution records for O. testaceum Cameron, 1887 in the country. We also provide the first descriptions and illustrations of the male genitalia for both species.

RESUMO

Liosphex Townes, 1977 is a genus of solitary wasps belonging to the family Rhopalosomatidae, whose larvae develop as ectoparasitoids of crickets. In this paper, both sexes of a new species of the genus are described, Liosphex amazonensis Bulbol & Somavilla sp. n. Three other species, Liosphex achuar Lohrmann, 2010, Liosphex atratus Lohrmann, 2010, and Liosphex bribri Lohrmann, 2010, are recorded for the first time in Brazil. The male of Liosphex guanabara Lohrmann, 2010 is described for the first time, and the species is registered for the state of Bahia. In addition, the first detailed descriptions and illustrations of male genitalia of three species of the genus, i.e., L. amazonensis sp. n., L. atratus, and L. guanabara, are provided.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Hexapods, commonly known as insects, are a neglected taxonomic group in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, with unanswered questions about their species richness and the ecological processes in which they are involved (e.g., colonization, introduction, establishment, and extinction). Herein, we provide an updated Hexapod checklist with current nomenclatural combinations. The entomofauna of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is currently composed of 453 species in 21 orders. The orders, and their respective number of species, are: Blattaria (9), Coleoptera (118), Collembola (29), Dermaptera (3), Diplura (1), Diptera (134), Embioptera (1), Hemiptera (29), Hymenoptera (59), Isoptera (2), Lepidoptera (25), Mantodea (1), Neuroptera (3), Odonata (5), Orthoptera (11), Phasmatodea (1), Phthiraptera (6), Psocoptera (3), Siphonaptera (1), Thysanoptera (10), and Zygentoma (2). The archipelago has 263 new taxon records (family + genera + species). Thirty-eight species (3.39%) were described from local specimens and most of them are likely endemic species. This study more than doubles our knowledge (from the previous 190 records) of the entomofauna in this large Brazilian archipelago. This study also provides a baseline for studies on its conservation status and for implementing future environmental management programs.

The parasitism and behavior manipulation of three different species of aculeate wasps by the entomopathogenic fungus Ophiocordyceps humbertii was recorded and described. A total of 30 parasitized specimens were observed and collected, being five specimens of Larra (Crabronidae), 21 of Liris (Crabronidae), and four of Epysiron (Pompilidae).(AU)

RESUMO

ABSTRACT We evaluated the occurrence of social wasps in the decomposition process in tropical rainforest in central Amazonia (Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Brazil), using cadavers of rats as attractants, exposed in suspended cages. Ten species, in three genera, of social wasps were collected only in the initial stages of decay (fresh and bloated). Five species were collected, mainly in the fresh stage, feeding on flesh: Agelaia angulata, Agelaia constructor, Agelaia fulvofasciata, Agelaia pallipes and Angiopolybia pallens. Five species were collected, mainly in the bloated stage, feeding on flesh and eggs and first instar larvae of dipteran: Agelaia testacea, Angiopolybia obidensis, Apoica arborea, Apoica pallens and Apoica thoracica. Due to the aspect of the injuries caused by the wasps to the carcass, they may be mistaken as skin ulcers, burns or abrasions, which may mislead a forensic investigation.

RESUMO

Wasps, important agents for the control of insect population, have been scantily studied in the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul. Current study investigates monthly variations of social wasps in microhabitats within a forest-agriculture mosaic. Samples were collected between February 2013 and February 2014, through active search and baited traps made from 2 L transparent PET bottles, in five microhabitats, namely, forest, monoculture, polyculture and the edges between the forest fragment and monoculture and polyculture, in the municipality of Doutor Maurício Cardoso. Statistical tests, similarity indices, dominance and constancy as well as PCoA were used for data analysis to group the collection. A total of 953 specimens were collected, distributed across 15 species and seven genera. Abundance differed between microhabitats and the monoculture cultivation was least similar to the other microhabitats. PCoA identified three different groups. Abundance was positively correlated with temperature, negatively correlated with air humidity and was not correlated with wind velocity. Social wasps are able to utilize resources outside the forest fragments, but monocultures may create barriers for their dispersal.

A PCoA identificou três grupos diferentes.
