RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Motivation for the study. Filling a knowledge gap regarding support groups for caregivers of children with multiple disabilities. Main findings. Support groups are valuable spaces for social support and learning for caregivers of children with multiple disabilities. They facilitate resilience and coping strategies following the birth of a child with multiple disabilities. They promote the participation and empowerment of caregivers of children with multiple disabilities to address access barriers and advocate for the fundamental rights of children. Implications. It is important to promote and support support groups for caregivers of children with multiple disabilities. To explore the perceived benefits of participating in a support group of caregivers of children with multiple disabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS.: A qualitative study with a focused ethnographic approach was conducted from October 2022 to February 2023, in which we applied convenience sampling. We included 20 caregivers of children with multiple disabilities. Information was collected through participant observation, focus groups, and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was performed by applying Braun and Clark's proposals. RESULTS.: The emerging themes were: social support network: integrating, informing, and helping each other; learning space: learning to take care and to take care of oneself; promoting empowerment: identifying and facing access barriers. CONCLUSIONS.: We found that the support group functions as a social support network provides information, reduces uncertainty, and facilitates coping and resilience after the birth and upbringing of a child with multiple disabilities. It is a space where one learns to care for and take care of oneself and where empowerment for the defense of the rights of children with disabilities is promoted.

RESUMO

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are recognized as being responsible for many cases of foodborne diseases worldwide. Cattle are the main reservoir of STEC, shedding the microorganisms in their feces. The serogroup STEC O91 has been associated with hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Locus of Adhesion and Autoaggregation (LAA) and its hes gene are related to the pathogenicity of STEC and the ability to form biofilms. Considering the frequent isolation of STEC O91, the biofilm-forming ability, and the possible role of hes in the pathogenicity of STEC, we propose to evaluate the ability of STEC to form biofilms and to evaluate the expression of hes before and after of biofilm formation. All strains were classified as strong biofilm-forming. The hes expression showed variability between strains before and after biofilm formation, and this may be due to other genes carried by each strain. This study is the first to report the relationship between biofilm formation, and hes expression and proposes that the analysis and diagnosis of LAA, especially hes as STEC O91 virulence factors, could elucidate these unknown mechanisms. Considering that there is no specific treatment for HUS, only supportive care, it is necessary to know the survival and virulence mechanisms of STEC O91.

RESUMO

Abstract Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by alterations in the catabolism of chylomicrons and by increased levels of plasma triglycerides. It has been shown that about 60-90% of FCS patients have biallelic mutations in the LPL gene and the remaining patients have mutations in genes encoding proteins closely related to LPL function. The objective of this manuscript is to illustrate the different clinical scenarios of FCS presentation, and to guide practitioners on the usefulness of genetic tests in each of them. To this end, several published papers about recommendations for the diagnosis of FCS are discussed briefly, in addition to the presentation of several hypothetical cases, highlighting different clinical presentations and possible associated genetic findings. These cases illustrate the multiplicity of potential aspects of family history, clinical manifestations, biochemical parameters, and patterns of genetic variants found in genomic analyses of FCS.

RESUMO

Background: Color-coded duplex sonography (CCDS) is a widely proposed noninvasive diagnostic tool in microsurgery. CCDS has been applied to lower extremity salvage cases to define appropriate blood flow velocity criteria for achieving arterial success in diabetic foot and complex microsurgery cases. This study aimed to compare the success ratio of free flaps when using CCDS versus cases where CCDS was not used. Methods: We included complex microsurgery cases from 2019 to 2021. These cases were subsequently categorized into two groups: group A consisted of cases where CCDS parameters were applied, whereas group B comprised cases where CCDS was not performed at all. Results: The study encompassed 14 cases (11 men and three women). The age range varied from 23 to 62 years, with an average age of 42. Using CCDS analysis and planning demonstrated improved outcomes in comparison with cases where CCDS was not performed, albeit without statistical significance (P = 0.064). Conclusions: The application of CCDS proves to be beneficial in the realm of microsurgery. Although not achieving statistical significance, our data imply that CCDS utilization holds promise for enhancing microsurgical procedures.

Introduction. Negative health consequences due to social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic were observed worldwide; overweight and obesity showed increasing trends. Objective. To analyze the changes in overweight, obesity and diet of schoolchildren in northwest Mexico before and after lockdown due to COVID-19. Materials and methods. Weight, height, and waist circumference of schoolchildren (n=479 pre-pandemic and n=820 post-pandemic) were collected in public schools located in medium to high marginalization neighborhoods. In the same periods dietary data was collected from a subsample of 203 and 179 schoolchildren, respectively. Results. The average age of schoolchildren in 2019 was 8,9 ±1,75 and 9,1 ± 1,54 in 2022. An increase in percentage of 6,2 was observed in the overweight plus obesity prevalence and a significant difference in the distribution of nutritional status (p=0,049) between the two periods. In addition, changes in central adiposity were observed, with an increase of 3 centimeters in waist circumference (p=0,001; 62,6 and 65,6 cm). The healthy eating index (HAI) classified the diet of schoolchildren as unhealthy during both periods. Conclusions. The increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, as well as central adiposity is worrying given that they were already a health problem before the COVID 19 confinement(AU)

Food retail is a component of the food environment that influences food selection and consumption. In recent decades, Mexico has experienced changes in the food environment that coincide with the increase in overweight, obesity, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among its population. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the density of food retail from 2010 to 2021 in areas of medium and high marginalization in Hermosillo, Sonora, located in the North Pacific region of Mexico, and their association with diet, anthropometry, and adult women's health. Information on food retail was obtained from the National Statistic Directory of Economic Units (DENUE). A sample of 104 adult women was interviewed, and their anthropometric measurements were taken. The findings revealed significant changes in the density of food retail in areas of medium and high marginalization during the study period. The participant's mean age was 47,6±15 years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure was 88%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. The increase in the density of convenience stores was positively associated with women's body mass index, waist circumference, and obesity (β: 3,22; p<0,01; β: 7,70; p<0,01; OR: 3,12; p<0,01). The results demonstrate that the type of establishment where food is purchased is associated with the population's health status.

RESUMO

Introduction In aesthetic surgery, we have a few evaluation tools that numerically and objectively measure the changes we make in patients. This article aimed to evaluate the nasal systematic analysis and compare findings between the three systems of nasal evaluation: photographs 2D, 3D surface imaging with the Kinect system, and 3D CT scan imaging. Methods We designed a longitudinal and descriptive prospective study with simple non-blind randomization. To compare the systematic nasal analysis between the three methods. If the findings are similar, all three methods would be useful in independent clinical scenarios. Results A total of 42 observations were included finding a minimum age of 21 with a mean of 28 years old. Also, 64% were female, 93% had adequate facial proportions, and 50% were Fitzpatrick III. For outcome statistics, we found differential nasal deviation between 3D images with a mean of 6.53 mm. While when comparing the nasal dorsum length, we found a statistical significance of p = 0.051. When comparing the nasal dorsum length index, we found no significant difference p = 0.32. Also, we did not find statistical significance when comparing the nasofrontal angle and tip rotation angle p = 1 for both. Conclusion We found that the population we serve has characteristics of Hispanic mestizo nose. The three methods seem to evaluate systematic nasal analysis in a very similar way, and any of them can be used depending on the scenario and the needs of plastic surgeons.

RESUMO

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have a positive effect on plant development and being a promising way to enhance crop productivity and as substitution of chemical fertilizers. Selenium (Se) is an important trace element and its intake is usually lower than the daily minimum amount required for humans; hence, there is a demand on the design of Se biofortification strategies. Here, the genetic traits known to be associated with Plant-Growth Promotion (PGP) and Se biotransformation of Exiguobacterium sp. S17 were evaluated through genome analysis. Its growth-promoting capacity was tested through plant-growth promotion assays in laboratory and field conditions, using Brassica juncea (indian mustard), Beta vulgaris (chard), and Lactuca sativa (lettuce). Additionally, the Se biotransformation ability of Exiguobacterium sp. S17 was evaluated and the obtained selenized bacteria were tested in mustard plants. The sequenced bacteria genome revealed the presence of multiple genes involved in important functions regarding soil and plant colonization, PGP and Se biotransformation. Moreover, it was demonstrated that Exiguobacterium sp. S17 enhanced plant growth and could be useful to produce Se accumulation and biofortification in accumulator plants such as mustard. Thereby, Exiguobacterium sp. S17 might be used for developing new, sustainable, and environmentally friendly agro-technological strategies.

RESUMO

Pinus. ponderosa (P. Lawson and C. Lawson) is a commercial tree and one of the most important forest species in North America. Ponderosa pine suffers hardship when going through vegetative propagation and, in some cases, 15-30 years are needed to achieve full reproductive capacity. Based on previous works on P. ponderosa regeneration through in vitro organogenesis and trying to improve the published protocols, our objective was to analyze the influence of different types of explants, basal culture media, cytokinins, auxins, and light treatments on the success of shoot multiplication and rooting phases. Whole zygotic embryos and 44 µΜ 6-benzyladenine showed the best results in terms of explants survival. For shoot organogenesis, whole zygotic embryos and half LP (LP medium, Quoirin and Lepoivre, 1977, modified by Aitken-Christie et al., 1988) macronutrients were selected. A significant positive interaction between whole zygotic embryos and half LP macronutrients was found for the percentage of explants forming shoots. Regarding the light treatments applied, a significantly higher percentage of shoots elongated enough to be rooted was detected in shoots growing under blue LED at a light intensity of 61.09 µmol m-2 s-1. However, the acclimatization percentage was higher in shoots previously cultivated under fluorescent light at a light intensity of 61.71 µmol m-2 s-1. Anatomical studies using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed the light treatments promoted differences in anatomical aspects in in vitro shoots; needles of plantlets exposed to red and blue LEDs revealed less stomata compared with needles from plantlets exposed to fluorescent light.
