RESUMO

The compositional nutrient diagnosis-CND method is a standard tool for evaluating plant nutritional status. Adjustments are crucial to elevate accuracy. The effectiveness of such methodological refinements should be rigorously assessed through accuracy tests that are benchmarked against the prescient diagnostic analysis-PDA methodology. The objective of this investigation was to refine the CND technique for a more precise evaluation of N, P, and B nutrient status in cotton. The study's database encompasses 144 data points pertaining to crop yield and foliar nutrient concentrations from cotton plantations in the Cerrado biome of Brazil. Subsequently, the CND norms were established through rigorous calibration. Three separate nutrient-dose trials, each featuring four levels of N, P and B, were carried out to assess plant true nutritional status. Adjustments were made to the nutrient responsiveness range-NRr (0.5 and 1.0), while yield response-YR were scrutinized at threshold levels (5% and 10%). The prerequisites for achieving high diagnostic accuracy were nutrient specific. For N, maximal accuracy was linked only to the YR parameter (YR = 10%). For P, the most precise outcomes were attained with a NRr = 0.5 and YI = 5%. For B, highest diagnostic accuracy when the NRr = 1.0 and YI = 10%. These insights highlight the need to fine-tune the CND method for reliable nutritional evaluations and cotton crop productivity optimization.

RESUMO

Boron is the most limiting micronutrient for soybean yield; therefore, accurate identification of its nutritional status is important for adequate fertilization management and maximize soybean yield potential. Currently, tools for nutritional status interpretation of B, such as the CND and DRIS are used; however, their efficacy is not considered to identify the true nutritional status of B. In this research, we investigated the efficacy of these methods to identify the nutritional status of B in 140 commercial soybean crops to obtain nutritional standards for the DRIS and CND methods. In addition, an experiment of B dose calibration (0, 300, 600, 1200 and 1800 g ha-1) was installed to assess the quality of nutritional diagnoses using the PDA. The experimental approach tested the limits of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00 for the NRr and values of 1%, 5%, or 10% for YR. The DRIS method was more effective, and, on average, its variations increased yield by 27% compared to CND, with the best performance of DRIS when NRr = 1.00 was adopted with 10% for YR. This study highlights the need for reliable and accurate diagnostic methods with global implications for crop sustainability by improving the efficacy of B fertilization programs and crop yield.

RESUMO

The biochar amendment to soil proved to be beneficial to improve soil quality and provide nutrients. However, the effect of biochar on the availability of P is still controversial. We aim to study the effect of adding phosphate fertiliser and biochar on the P bioavailability in soils of different mineralogies. Eight biochars derived from biomass (rice husk and coffee husk), soil (sandy and clayey), and phosphate fertiliser (triple superphosphate) were produced. The biochar enrichment process with superphosphate was carried out before and after pyrolysis. Thus, we tested two biochar groups: (1) enriched biochars prior to pyrolysis; (2) enriched biochars after pyrolysis. These biochars were tested as P sources in soils of three mineralogies (kaolinite/oxide, kaolinite, and smectite). Batch sorption-desorption experiments were conducted. The sorbed P was fractionated to examine the factors controlling the retention of applied P. In the three soil mineralogies the use of enriched biochars prior to pyrolysis results in lower availability of P. In contrast, the enriched biochars after pyrolysis increase the bioavailability of P. The coffee husk biochar is more suitable than rice husk biochar to protect P from soil retention reactions. The use of sandy soil rather than clayey soil in enriched biochars compositions results in higher P content availability when applied to soils. The factor that controls the retention of P is the reaction between P, organic compounds, and Fe and Al compounds. The greater the relationship between biochar and soluble P in the fertiliser, the higher the increase of P retention.

RESUMO

The research and application of biochars enriched with minerals have increased in recent years; however, the mineral fraction used consists of specific minerals, such as clay minerals and synthesized compounds. In this work, the effects of adding two specific soil types (sandy and clayey) to rice and coffee husks in order to generate biochars via pyrolysis was investigated. Chemical, physical-chemical, thermal, spectroscopic and crystallographic analyses were conducted on the produced biochars. The study confirmed that the presence of mineral soils during the pyrolysis process increases the yield, C retention ratio, and specific surface area. It also decreases the pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), nutrient content, and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of biochars. However, the biochars produced by mixing coffee husks and mineral soils still demonstrate a capacity to increase the pH and the CEC of tropical soils. In addition, increased C retention demonstrates an environmental benefit of this biochar production method. Biomass pyrolysis combined with clayey soil results in a biochar with a higher degree of aromaticity and higher thermal stability when compared to biomass pyrolysis alone. These characteristics give the biochar a recalcitrant character, without the necessity for steps related to the synthesis of specific mineral compounds, which reduces the economic and energy cost of the process.

RESUMO

Studies related to the monitoring of soil quality by physical attributes are important for the evaluation and maintenance of the sustainability of agricultural systems, besides indicating the appropriate management of the environment, aiming at its conservation and productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the stability of aggregates and organic carbon after the application of gypsum, soil scarification and a succession of crops. The treatments consisted of an absence and addition of gypsum, absence and presence of soil scarification, and three systems of crops in succession. The experimental design was made of randomized blocks, in a 2x2x4 factorial scheme, with eight replications. The aggregates were evaluated as stabled in water and soil organic carbon content. The treatment where gypsum was applied, as well as the soybean/maize/brachiaria/fallow (SMBF) succession system, presented better results in soil aggregation and higher levels of organic carbon.

Phosphorus (P) is one of the nutrients that most limits agricultural productivity, especially in tropical soils. Enriched biochar has been proposed to increase the bioavailability of P and other nutrients in the soil. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the availability of P in phosphate biochar (composed of biomass and soil) as a function of the triple superphosphate mixture before and after the pyrolysis process. We produced eight types of enriched biochar via pyrolysis by combining sandy or clayey soil with rice or coffee husk, and by adding triple superphosphate before or after pyrolysis. The heating of the phosphate fertilizer during the pyrolysis process resulted in a higher crystallinity of the phosphates, lower content of labile fractions of P and lower content of available P in phosphate biochars than when the superphosphate was added after pyrolysis.

Abstract This research evaluated the monthly variation of plant mineral nutrition in six species of fruit trees over a year. Leaf samples were taken from the fruit trees and nutritional status (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Mo) was determined in the leaves in a month basis from April until November for apple, persimmon and peach. Mandarin mineral nutrition was monitored for one year, and grape and fig from May to November. Using this data, the Diagnosis Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) was also calculated to evaluate the nutrient balance in the plants. The concentration of N and P had seasonal differences, especially in apple and peach, which reached the peak during the summer. Apple, fig, and grape trees had large ranging on their mineral contents over the year, especially with the P and K levels reaching the minimum during the harvesting season. However, the seasonal changes in leaf micronutrient concentrations were not uniform and not affected by phenological stage. The DRIS data demonstrated that mandarin had the best nutrient balance compared to others and that K was the most limiting element among the fruit trees. In summary, the current data suggest the occurrence of a significant seasonality in mineral nutrition in these six fruit trees, especially in temperate ones.

RESUMO

The nutritional status of orange trees depends of reference values that are appropriate to reflect their nutritional condition. The objective this work was to assess the nutrient reference values and evaluated the nutritional status of sweet orange trees in several orchard fields of Central Amazonia (municipalities of Iranduba, Manacapuru, Manaus, Presidente Figueiredo and Rio Preto da Eva). We used the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System for multivariate relation (DRIS) method to establish the nutrient reference values. The nutritional status of 120 commercial orchards of orange grafted on rangpur lime was evaluated by the sufficiency ranges defined from the set of nutritionally balanced plants. For macronutrients, the nutritional sufficiency ranges were (g kg-1): 28-30 (for nitogen, N); 1.6-1.7 (phosphorus, P); 7-9 (potassium, K); 26-29 (calcium, Ca); 3.6-4.0 (magnesium, Mg); 1.7-2.0 (sulfur - S) and for micronutrients (mg kg-1): 47-56 (boron, B); 8-10 (copper, Cu); 84-93 (iron, Fe); 12-13 (manganese, Mn); 14-16 (zinc, Zn). For macronutrients, the critical levels were (g kg-1): 28 (for N); 1.6 (P); 7 (K); 26 (Ca); 3.6 (Mg); 1.7 (S) and for micronutrients (mg kg-1): 47 (B); 8 (Cu); 84 (Fe); 12 (Mn) and 14 for Zn. Nutritional standards obtained by the DRIS methods are in disagreement with the normal ranges proposed in the literature for most nutrients. In about 50% of orchards, the elements P, K, Ca, S, B, Cu e Fe were found below the critical levels. This suggests that orange producers in Central Amazonia should pay more attention to these elements when planning fertilization practices.
