RESUMO

A taxonomic revision of Megalothoracha Hendel, 1911 is provided, including a description of Megalothoraca rosalyae Wendt, sp. nov. from Colombia. The genus encompasses large species from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia (new record), and each species was described based either on males or females. These species can be diagnosed by long and slender mid and hind legs and wing longer than body, vein R2+3 with two strong curves on apical third, and short spurious vein medially. And males have costal vein conspicuously bowed anteriorly and thickened on medial portion. The following nomenclatural changes are made: Megalothoraca hendeli Enderlein, 1912, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of M. pterodontida Hendel, 1911; Batrachophthalmum teleopsis (Hennig, 1938) comb. nov. is transferred from Megalothoraca, and Batrachophthalmum quimbaya Carvalho, Wolff & Wendt, 2011, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of B. teleopsis. A key to species and illustrations of the female and male terminalia are provided.(AU)

RESUMO

A new species of the genus Beebeomyia Curran found in the northern coastal region of the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil is described and illustrated, including characteristics of the male and female terminalia, third instar larva and puparium. This new species is only the second record for the genus in Brazil and broadens its occurrence to the Atlantic Forest ecoregion. Beebeomyia taccarivora sp. nov. is straightforwardly distinguishable from all other known species of Beebeomyia for exhibiting an entirely yellowish orange thorax with a central brown-colored stripe on the scutum, and a brownish orange abdomen with a central brown stripe on tergites 1-4. Similarly to what had been previously described for congenerics, female B. taccarivora flies exclusively use the inflorescences of their host plant, Taccarum ulei, as oviposition and brooding sites. Developing larvae feed on living floral tissue and pollen, and pupariation occurs within the inner surface of the spathe.

RESUMO

Richardiodes Hendel is a genus scarcely known taxonomically and two species are recognized: Richardiodes rectinervis Hendel from Brazilian Amazon and R. trimaculata Hennig from Peru. Herein, these two species are revised and illustrated. Examination of non-type specimens revealed considerable variation in the general body color, and the geographic distribution of each species has been expanded, especially of R. rectinervis. The limits of the genus are revised and better supported with the addition of new diagnostic characters. The male and female terminalia are described and illustrated for the first time.

RESUMO

Platystomatidae (Signal Flies) are one of the largest families of Tephritoidea, with about 1200 species and four subfamilies, worldwide distributed. However, Platystomatidae are not well represented in the New World, and in the Neotropical Region only four genera and 26 species, belonging to Platystomatinae, are recorded. The family is a group understudied in Colombia and only one species is recorded to the country.

RESUMO

Richardiidae are a family of "acalyptrate" Diptera represented by ca. 180 species distributed in the New World, mostly in the Neotropical region. The species that occur in Colombia have received little attention from taxonomists, and the great majority of them are known only from their type localities. Currently, 14 genera and 23 species are known to occur in the country.

Richardiidae are a family of Tephritoidea in which most genera are poorly known taxonomically, including some which were poorly described with limited or no illustrations. With the aim to decrease this taxonomic gap, herein we review two scarcely known monotypic genera: Odontomerella Hendel, 1912 and Maerorichardia Hennig, 1937, both known only from the holotypes of their type species. Maerorichardia is the only genus of Richardiidae with mid and hind tibiae thicker than their respective femora, and the wing with the anal lobe distinctly developed. Odontomerella can be distinguished from the others richardiids by the postcranium reduced and little wider ventrally, the compound eye well developed, occupying most of the head, with the gena and postcranium very reduced, and the face short, with the oral margin distinctly concave. The limits of both genera are revised and better supported with the addition of new diagnostic characters. Odontomera flavipleura Hennig, 1938 is transferred to Odontomerella. The types of the species are revised and illustrated.(AU)

RESUMO

Previously Neoidiotypa was a monotypic genus represented by a peculiar wasp-like richardiid from Cuba - N. appendiculata (Loew). In this work, five new species are described in this genus: N. mexicana sp. nov. from Mexico; N. alamagna sp. nov., N. flaviatra sp. nov., N. nigra sp. nov. and N. sticta sp. nov. from Costa Rica. New diagnostic characters for the genus are included. An identification key and illustrations for all species are provided.

RESUMO

Richardia Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera, Tephritoidea, Richardiidae) from Central Amazon, Brazil. There are 11 species of Richardia known to Brazil. Of these, only four are known to occur in the Brazilian Amazon Region, where the diversity of Richardia is underestimated. Herein we describe and illustrate Richardia intemperata sp. nov. and Richardia parispina sp. nov. from Amazonas, Brazil. An illustrated key to males from this region is also provided.
