Introducción. La rinitis alérgica (RA) es una de las enfermedades crónicas más frecuentes en la población pediátrica, afecta la calidad de vida del niño y la familia, tiene impacto económico y es frecuentemente subdiagnosticada y subtratada. Dada la escasez de datos locales, se describe su prevalencia y las características clínicas de la población en estudio. Población y métodos. Estudio observacional de corte transversal de pacientes menores de 19 años. Resultados. Se incluyeron 250 pacientes al azar, con una media de edad de 9 años (DE 5) Presentaron diagnóstico de RA 14 de ellos; se observó una prevalencia de RA del 6 %. Conclusiones. La prevalencia de RA en nuestro medio es del 6 %. Debemos darle la relevancia que amerita para brindar un diagnóstico y tratamiento adecuado.


Introduction. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most frequent chronic diseases in the pediatric population; it affects the quality of life of children and their families, has economic impact, and is frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated. Given the scarcity of local data, here we describe the prevalence of AR and the clinical characteristics of the study population. Population and methods. Observational, cross-sectional study in patients younger than 19 years. Results. A total of 250 patients were randomly included; their mean age was 9 years (SD: 5). AR was diagnosed in 14 of them. The prevalence of AR was 6%. Conclusions. The prevalence of AR in our setting was 6%. AR should be given the relevance it deserves so as to provide an adequate diagnosis and treatment.

Introduction: Aeroallergen exposure has an intra- and extra-domiciliary component and varies according to climatological zones. Mexico is a large country with a great variety of climates. A previous study (2009) evaluated skin prick test results (SPT) in different regions. In this study, we compare previous sensitization patterns from 14y ago with current ones and compare them between different climatological zones. Methods: Mexican allergists were asked to share their last 100 SPT results in patients with respiratory allergy. Clinics were grouped in (semi)humid vs (semi)dry zones. Results were analyzed nationwide and compared to the 2009 results, calculating odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), with p <0.05 as cut-off. Similarly, we compared (semi)humid versus dry zones. Results: We collected 2915 SPT results from 28 clinics (19 cities). Dermatophagoides was the most frequently sensitizing allergen. There was a significant increase in SPT positivity from 2009 to 2023 in both in- and outdoor aeroallergens (OR 1.26-2.65, 95% CI from 1.06-1.50 to 1.99-3.52). Comparing dry-humid zones, sensitization to pollen from Oleaceae, Fagaceae (p < 0.0001 all) and most weeds is more frequent in humid zones, as are Dermatophagoides and cockroach (both p < 0.0001). Eucalyptus, mesquite, and all grass pollen sensitizations predominate in dry zones (p < 0.05-0.0001). There are no differences in sensitization to cat or dog between zones. Conclusion: We found a general increase in SPT sensitization over the past fourteen years, suggesting that this is probably not only due to climate change. The different sensitization profile throughout the country was mainly related to humidity. Repeating epidemiologic SPT studies over the years could help tracking changes in allergen sensitization over time.

OBJECTIVES: Allergic diseases and Meniere's disease found to have a possible link in observational study. However, the potential causal relationship between the two is unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the causal relationship between allergic diseases and Meniere's disease using a new data analysis technique called bidirectional Mendelian randomization study. METHOD: Summary-level statistics for Meniere's disease and three allergic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema/dermatitis) were obtained from large-scale genome-wide association studies. The inverse variance weighted method was used as the primary measure, supplemented by MR-Egger regression and the weighted median method. To ensure the reliability of the conclusions, Cochran's Q, MR-Egger intercept, MR-PRESSO test, leave-one-out test, and MR Steiger test were used. RESULTS: Inverse-variance weighted method showed asthma (p = 0.008, OR = 3.908, 95% CI 1.424-10.724, adjust_p = 0.024), allergic rhinitis (p = 0.026, OR = 24.714, 95% CI 1.479-412.827, adjust_p = 0.026) and eczema/dermatitis (p = 0.019, OR = 3725.954, 95% CI 3.795 to 3,658,399.580, adjust_p = 0.029) all had a significant effect on Meniere's disease. Reverse Mendelian randomization studies have shown that Meniere's disease does not increase the risk of three allergic diseases. Sensitivity analysis showed no horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity for each trait. CONCLUSION: Our Mendelian randomization analysis supports a positive causal relationship between three allergic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema/dermatitis) and Meniere's disease. This suggests that physicians should pay more attention to the Meniere's patient's allergy history and consider allergy avoidance as part of their treatment plan. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Mendelian Randomized (MR) studies are second only to randomized controlled trials in terms of the level of evidence.

Aim: To evaluate the criteria used by allergists in selecting an immunotherapy extract (allergen immunotherapy [AIT]-extract) in rhinitis patients with polysensitization. Methods: First, a cross-sectional study was carried out by evaluating different factors that influence the medical choice of AIT-extract. Second, a literature review was performed by evaluating the diagnostic performance of atopy tests. Results: A total of 419 patients were included (84 children, 149 adolescents and 186 adults). Anamnesis, atopy tests and exposure to pets were the main factors for choosing the AIT extract. The sensitivity and specificity of atopy tests were high for Dermatophagoides spp., (>80%), moderate for pets (60%) and indeterminate for Blomia tropicalis. Conclusion: NCTs could be necessary for AIT-extract selection in polysensitized allergic rhinitis patients.


Allergen immunotherapy is an effective treatment for patients with allergic rhinitis. Atopy tests are used to identify possible substances in the environment that cause symptoms. A patient may sometimes have multiple substances which could be causing their allergic reactions, which makes it difficult to choose the appropriate immunotherapy for the patient. In this study, we identified some factors that might help to guide the criteria used by allergists when selecting the extract for immunotherapy.

Background and objective: Currently, there are no guideline recommendations for the duration of intranasal corticosteroid (INCS) treatment for allergic rhinitis (AR). We aimed to catalogue real-world AR-INCS prescription patterns. Materials and methods: This multicenter, non-interventional, cross-sectional study used online general practitioner (GP) and patient surveys from 4 countries. Eligible GPs had 3-35 years of practical experience, regularly prescribed INCSs for AR treatment, and had managed ≥5 patients with AR per month according to Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines in the previous year. Eligible patients with AR were non-pregnant females or males, aged 18-65 years, previous AR-INCS users (≥12 months), and receiving GP-prescribed AR therapy. Survey participants were from countries with 15-50% AR prevalence and mostly prescription-only INCS use of ≥100 million units annually (Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Thailand). GP surveys and GP-completed patient record forms (PRFs) gathered AR-care and INCS-use data over 10 months; each GP completed patient record forms (PRFs) for 3 patients with AR under their care. The patient survey reflected actual AR-INCS experience, treatment duration, and adherence factors from patient perspectives. The target sample size was 75 GPs, 75 patients, and ≥30 respondents per country. Results: From 900 GP-PRFs, the mean GP-recommended AR-INCS durations reported were 8.4 (Brazil), 8.3 (Mexico), 5.4 (Spain), and 6.4 (Thailand) weeks. From 300 patient surveys, mean reported INCS recommended durations were 6.4 (Brazil), 5.1 (Mexico), 4.0 (Spain), and 4.9 (Thailand) weeks; reported actual use durations were 6.2, 4.8, 3.6, and 6.4 weeks, respectively. The most frequent GP-PRF-reported factors influencing AR-INCS treatment duration were symptom severity (76-85%), symptom recurrence (49-73%), and existing comorbidities (33-57%). The most frequent GP-PRF-reported obstacles to adherence included forgetting to take medication regularly (54-100%), subsiding symptoms (42-91%), and being unable to continue activities (33-51%). Subsiding symptoms (36-53%) and reaching the prescription duration end (20-51%) were most frequent obstacles reported by the patient survey. Patients from all surveyed countries indicated that they visited the GP, a different physician, or a pharmacy for assistance with symptom recurrence; some patients also self-medicated. Conclusions: Real-world AR-INCS prescription durations vary between countries and actual use tends to be shorter than prescribed. Understanding underlying factors may support appropriate AR-INCS use. The study was not powered to statistically compare intercountry differences; hence, comparisons have not been drawn, and the small sample may not reflect a complete picture of clinical practice and patients with AR in each country.

Rhinitis arises from either allergic or non-allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa, characterized by the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the tissue and nasal secretions, along with structural alterations in the nasal mucosa. The pathways through which air pollution affects rhinitis may diverge from those affecting asthma. This article aims to review the effects of diverse air pollutants on the nose, the correlation of climate change and pollution, and how they aggravate the symptoms of patients with rhinitis.

Introduction Despite the high level of patient satisfaction with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and the clinical improvement, polyp recurrence is observed in 23% to 87% of patients and requires reoperation. Objective To assess the prognostic value of polypoid changes of the middle turbinate (PCMT) in relapse of paranasal sinus polyps in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyp (CRSwNP) after FESS and the effect of partial middle turbinectomy (PMT) on the outcome of surgery. Methods We conducted a prospective clinical study on 60 patients with CRSwNP with and without PCMT. The patients were allocated into three groups: group I included twenty patients without PCMT; group II, twenty patients with PCMT; and group III included twenty patients with PCMT submitted to PMT. The patients were evaluated endoscopically according to the Lund-Kennedy endoscopic scoring system, radiologically according to the Lund-Mackay scoring system, and symptomatically through the 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22). Results The total postoperative Lund-Kennedy score differed significantly among the 3 groups ( p < 0.001), with a group II presenting a significantly higher total score compared to groups I and III. The Preoperative SNOT-22 score differed significantly among the three groups ( p = 0.013), with group II presenting a significantly higher score compared to group I. There was a significant association involving the 3 groups and relapse at 12 months ( p = 0.029); relapse was higher in group II (50.0%) than in groups I (20%) and III (15.0%). Conclusion There was a significant association between PCMT and the relapse of nasal polyps. Also, nasal polyposis recurred at a lower rate in the group submitted to middle turbinate resection compared to the group in whom it was preserved.

Introducción: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha sido la causa de morbilidad y mortalidad muy elevadas a escala mundial, que también ha afectado al personal de salud debido a la naturaleza propia de su trabajo, muchas veces en condiciones inseguras y con riesgo de contagio. Objetivo: Caracterizar a trabajadores de la salud afectados por la covid-19 según variables clínicas y sociodemográficas. Método: Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal de 114 trabajadores de la salud con COVID-19, pertenecientes al Policlínico Docente José Martí Pérez de Santiago de Cuba, en el 2021. Para recoger la información se revisó la base de datos del Departamento de Higiene y Epidemiología y se elaboraron encuestas. Resultados: Se encontró un predominio del sexo femenino (78,0 %), en las edades de 30 a 59 años (83,3 %). Los antecedentes personales de hipertensión arterial estuvieron presentes en 46,5 % de los afectados. La pérdida del olfato resultó ser el síntoma más frecuente (53,5 %). La neumonía (14,9 %) y la fatiga (37,7 %) fueron la complicación y la secuela que prevalecieron. Los médicos representaron 50,0 % en el perfil ocupacional y el área de contagio más frecuente fue el policlínico (36,8 %). Conclusiones: Las características clínicas y sociodemográficas encontradas en los trabajadores de la salud con COVID-19 mostraron que este personal es vulnerable, por lo que se debe cumplir estrictamente con las medidas de bioseguridad.


Introduction: The pandemic of COVID-19 has been the very high morbidity and mortality cause worldwide that has also affected the health personnel due to the nature characteristic of its work, many times under insecure conditions and with infection risk. Objective: To characterize health workers affected by covid-19 according to clinical and sociodemographic variables. Method: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 114 health workers with COVID-19 belonging to José Martí Pérez Teaching Polyclinic was carried out in Santiago de Cuba, in 2021. To pick up the information the database of the Hygiene and Epidemiology Department was revised and surveys were elaborated. Results: There was a prevalence of the female sex (78.0 %), aged 30 to 59 (83.3 %). The personal history of hypertension was present in 46.5% of those affected. The loss of smell was the most frequent symptom (53.5 %). Pneumonia (14.9 %) and fatigue (37.7%) were the complication and sequel that prevailed. Doctors represented 50.0% in the occupational profile and the most frequent infection area was the polyclinic (36.8 %). Conclusions: The clinical and sociodemographic characteristics found in health workers with COVID-19 showed that this personnel is vulnerable, reason why biosafety measures should be strictly followed.

OBJETIVO: To identify and registry the most important aeroallergens trapped at the aerobiology station in the city of Samborondon, Ecuador. METHODS: Pollen grains and fungal spore counts were performed according to the standardized technique with a Hirst-type collection equipment, Burkard spore trap for seven days, following the recommendations of the National Allergy Bureau (NAB) of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). The equipment was installed on the roof of the Universidad de Especialidades Espiritu Santo (UEES), 25 m above ground level, coordinates: 2°07 ́57 ́ ́S 79°52 ́06 ́ ́W, in the city of Samborondon. The sampling period was performed from November 2022 to April 2023. RESULTS: We identified the following pollen families: Poaceae (258 grains/m3), Apocynaceae (Plumeria rubra pc) (214 grains/m3), Lamiaceae (180 grains/m3), Asteraceae Ambrosía spp.- (60 grains/m3), Chenopodiacea (27 grains/m3), Myrtaceae (17 grains/m3), Pinaceae (11 grains/m3), Betulaceae (7 grains/m3). Also identified fungical spores: Fuzariella spp./Leptosphaeria spp. (1899/m3), Cladosporium spp. (1407/m3), Nigrospora spp. (1183/m3), Dreschlera/Helmintosporum spp. (329/m3), Alternaria spp. (98/m3), Pithomyces spp. (79/m3), Curvularia spp. (48/m3), Stemphylium spp. (46/m3). CONCLUSIONS: We reported the first study of aerobiology (capture and identification of environmental pollens and fungi) in the city of Samborondon. The inhabitants of this area are exposed to different aeroallergens with a predominance of Poaceaes pollen and Fuzzariella spp./Leptosphaeria spp. spores. The identified allergens should be part of the usual allergy studies. The results of this first preliminary study should be compared with information from the forthcoming years, which will help to identify variations in the concentration of seasonal aeroallergens, annual fluctuations, and extend the traps to other parts of the city.

CONCLUSIONES: Se reporta el primer estudio de aerobiología (captación e identificación de pólenes y hongos ambientales), en la ciudad de Samborondón. Los habitantes de esta zona están expuestos a diferentes aeroalérgenos con predominancia al polen de Poaceaes y esporas de Fuzzariella spp./Leptosphaeria spp. Los alérgenos identificados deberían formar parte de los estudios alergológicos habituales. Los resultados de este primer estudio preliminar deberían ser comparados con información de los siguientes años para ayudar a identificar las variaciones de concentración de aeroalérgenos estacionales, las fluctuaciones anuales, y extender los captadores a otros puntos de la ciudad.

OBJECTIVE: To report the Tipuana tipu pollen as a new allergen capable of triggering allergic symptoms. METHODS: The pollen counts were made according to standardized technique with a Burkard seven days following the European Aerobiology Society´s Network Group recommendations.1 The trap was installed on the roof of Clinica SANNA, El Golf, San Isidro, which is 20 m high, 12°5'54"S 77°3'6"W in the west-south of the Lima urban area. The sampling period was performed from September 2020 to October 2021. Collection of Tipuana tipu pollens and Preparation of Tipuana tipu pollen extracts 1:20 w/v was done using a previously described method.2 We carried out systematic skin prick testing with Tipuana tipu pollen extract and other aeroallergens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, Blomia tropicalis), molds (Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium notatum), cat and dog danders, Periplaneta americana, grass six mix, weed mix (Inmunotek, Spain) on 80 patients (18 to 50 years old) seen in our allergy center, they suffering from november to january rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis symptoms. The majority living near avenues and large green areas, where Tipuana trees grew. RESULTS: We found a total of 952 grains/m3 of Tipuana tipu pollen between November 2020 to january 2021, with the maximum concentration of 37 grains/m3 on December 10th. We also found other airborne pollen Types: Poaceae, Myrtaceae, Compositae and Betulaceae. 14/80 patients (17,5%) showed positive skin prick test only to Tipuana tipu extract. Most of the patients with positive tests to Tipuana extract presented symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis during the Tipuana pollination period. Four patients showed positive skin prick test to Tipuana tipu and grass 6 mix extracts, most of the rest of our patients were sensitized to dust mites' extracts (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus). CONCLUSIONS: The west-south population of Lima urban city is exposed to Tipuana tipu pollen. We do not foud previous publications about Tipuana tipu allergy. Almost 18% of the patients tested in our sample were mono-sensitized to this pollen. The results of this study should be compared with data from the forthcoming years, to identify seasonal and annual fluctuations, extend the traps to other locations in Lima, and of course try to standardize and improve the Tipuana tipu pollen extract.


OBJETIVO: Reportar al polen de Tipuana tipu como un nuevo alérgeno capaz de desencadenar síntomas alérgicos. MÉTODOS: Los conteos de polen se realizaron según la técnica estandarizada con un equipo colector tipo Hirst, Burkard spore trap for seven days, siguiendo las recomendaciones del grupo de la Red Europea de Sociedades de Aerobiología1. El equipo se instaló en la azotea de la Clínica SANNA El Golf, San Isidro, a 20 m de altura desde el nivel del suelo, 12°5'54"S 77°3'6"O en la zona suroeste del área urbana de Lima. El periodo de captación se llevó a cabo entre septiembre de 2020 y octubre de 2021. La recolección de granos de polen de Tipuana tipu, y la preparación del extracto alergénico (peso/volumen) 1:20 p/v, se realizó usando metodología previamente descrita2. Se realizaron estudios de pruebas cutáneas (skin prick test), en 80 pacientes (entre 18 y 50 años), con sintomatología de rinoconjuntivitis; referían, además, mayor intensidad de sus síntomas entre noviembre y enero. La mayoría de pacientes dijeron vivir cerca a avenidas y parques donde había árboles de Tipuana tipu. Fueron evaluados en el servicio de Alergología de la Clínica SANNA, El Golf, San Isidro. Se aplicaron extractos de polen de Tipuana tipu, y otros aeroalérgenos como ácaros del polvo (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, Blomia tropicalis), hongos ambientales (Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium notatum), epitelios de gato y perro, Periplaneta americana, mezclas de seis gramíneas, mezclas de malezas (Inmunotek, España). RESULTADOS: Encontramos un total de 952 granos/m3 de polen de Tipuana tipu entre noviembre de 2020 y enero de 2021; con la máxima concentración de 37 granos/m3 el 10 de diciembre. También identificamos otras familias polínicas: Poaceae, Myrtaceae, Compositae y Betulaceae. 14/80 pacientes (el 17,5%), resultaron positivos solo al extracto de Tipuana tipu, en el skin prick test. La mayoría de los pacientes con resultado positivo al extracto de Tipuana tipu referían síntomas de rinoconjuntivitis durante el periodo de polinización de los árboles de Tipuana. Cuatro pacientes tuvieron positividad al extracto de Tipuana tipu, y al extracto en mezcla de seis gramíneas; la mayoría del resto de pacientes mostraron sensibilidad a ácaros del polvo doméstico (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus). CONCLUSIONES: Los habitantes de la zona suroeste de la ciudad urbana de Lima están expuestos al polen de Tipuana tipu. No hemos encontrado publicaciones previas sobre alergia a este tipo de polen. Casi un 18% de pacientes estudiados en nuestra muestra, estuvieron monosensibilizados al extracto del polen de Tipuana tipu.
