Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterial pathogen that causes bloodstream infections, pneumonia, and skin abscesses and is the primary pathogen responsible for medical devices associated with biofilm infections, accounting for approximately 70 % of cases. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated this microorganism as a top priority due to its role in causing over 20,000 bacteremia-related deaths in the US each year. The issue of pathogen resistance to antibiotics, mainly by a biofilm, further complicates these infections since biofilms render the bacterial colony impervious to antibiotics. However, many natural and synthetic substances also induce bacterial biofilm formation. Therefore, we investigated whether the most common active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) could induce biofilm formation in two clinical isolates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Staphylococcus aureus, one of them also methicillin-resistant (A2M) and two medical devices. We detected biofilm inducers, inhibitors, and destabilizers. Microbial strain, medical devices, API structure, and concentration influenced the modulatory effects of biofilm. In all devices tested, including microplates, FR18 duodenal probe, and respiratory probe, the clinic isolate methicillin-resistant S. aureus A2M exhibited lower susceptibility to biofilm formation than S. aureus A1. The anti-inflammatory acetaminophen, the hypocholesterolemic lovastatin, and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide all induced biofilm. However, verapamil, an antihypertensive, and cetirizine, an antihistamine, inhibited biofilm on S. aureus A2M, while propranolol, another antihypertensive, inhibited biofilm on S. aureus A1. Additionally, diclofenac, an analgesic, and cetirizine destabilized the biofilm, resulting in more free bacteria and possibly making them more susceptible to external agents such as antibiotics. Nonetheless, further epidemiologic analyses and in vivo assays are needed to confirm these findings and to establish a correlation between drug use, the onset of bacterial infections in patients, and the use of medical devices. This work provides information about the probable clinical implications of drugs in patients using medical devices or undergoing surgical procedures. Inhibitory APIs could also be used as drug repurposing or templates to design new, more potent biofilm inhibitors.

Arsenic (As) and Cadmium (Cd) are toxic to rice plants. However, selenium (Se) has the potential to regulate As and Cd toxicity. The present study aimed to evaluate the co-exposure to As5+ and Se6+ species in two rice cultivars, BRS Pampa and EPAGRI 108. The plants were divided into six groups and cultivated until complete maturation of the grains, under greenhouse conditions. Regarding total As and inorganic As (i-As) accumulation in grains, the highest concentrations were found for BRS Pampa. For Se, EPAGRI 108 presented the highest concentration of inorganic and organic Se (i-Se and o-Se). The exposure assessments showed that Se biofortification can mitigate the As accumulation in rice and, consequently, the risk of As and Cd toxicity in grains for human consumption. The combined effect of As and Se in rice plants could represent an alternative to biofortify this food in a safe way and with a higher percentage of bioavailable Se. Although Se is able to mitigate As toxicity in rice plants, in the present study we showed that co-exposure in different cultivars under the same growing conditions may present different responses to As and Se exposure.

Organochloride (OC) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were determined in the muscle tissue of fifty sardine samples (Sardinella brasiliensis) sampled off the south-east Brazilian shelf. The aim herein was to investigate OCs and PCBs composition profile, bioaccumulation potential and human risks. The concentrations of 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were below the method limit of quantification in most samples (ca. 94%), with few detected, namely δ-HCH, γ-HCH, Endosulfan I and II, Endosulfan Sulphate, DDE, Dieldrin, Endrin, Endrin Aldeide, Endrin Cetone and Metoxyclor. Phytoremediation has been a potential solution for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water. Here, we evaluated the toxicological safety of ciprofloxacin-contaminated water treated by 96 h with Salvinia molesta. The Neotropical catfish Rhamdia quelen was used as a model, and the potential of the phytoremediation technique for mitigating the drug accumulation in the fishes was also studied. Fish exposed to Cipro (1 and 10 µg·L-1) in untreated water showed toxic responses (alteration of hematological, genotoxicity, biochemical, and histopathological biomarkers) and accumulated Cipro in their muscles at concentrations high for human consumption (target hazardous quotient > 1). Fish exposed to water treated with S. molesta showed no toxic effect and no accumulation of Cipro in their tissues. This must be related to the fact that S. molesta removed up to 97% of Cipro from the water. The decrease in Cipro concentrations after water treatment with S. molesta not only prevented the toxic effects of Cipro on R. quelen fish but also prevented the antimicrobial accumulation in fish flesh, favouring safe consumption by humans. For the very first time, we showed the potential of phytoremediation as an efficiently nature-based solution to prevent environmental toxicological effects of antimicrobials to nontarget organisms such as fish and humans. The use of S. molesta for Cipro-removal from water is a green technology to be considered in the combat against antimicrobial resistance.

Toxic metal contamination, distribution and risk were evaluated in the sediments of three lagoons used for fish farming in the central region of Peru. The distribution of toxic metals in the sediment was in the following descending order of Zn > V > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Cr > Co > Cd > Sb. Contamination factor (Cf) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) values for Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn indicated low contamination and for Cd moderate contamination. The pollution load index (PLI) ranged from 0.3856 to 0.5622; indicating no appreciable contamination and the modified degree of contamination (mCd) corroborated this result. The potential ecological risk (Ri) in the Tranca Grande and Pomacocha lagoons revealed a low potential ecological risk and in Tipicocha a moderate potential ecological risk. HI values < 1 indicated that non-carcinogenic adverse effects were negligible. In adults, the Total carcinogenic risk (TCR) values for As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb were less than 1.00E-04, indicating no significant carcinogenic risk. In children, TCR values showed similar behavior with the exception of As. Therefore, considering that fish production for domestic consumption and export is carried out in these lagoons, it is important to continue monitoring toxic metals to protect the health of these ecosystems and human health.

As filter feeders, bivalve mollusks have a high potential risk of contamination by microplastics (MPs), which can be considered a transfer vector for humans through their consumption. Spatial-temporal differences in the MP concentration were evaluated in the cultured oyster Magallana gigas in Todos Santos Bay (TSB) and San Quintin Bay (SQB) during winter and summer (2019). MPs were found in all samples in both seasons, where microfibers were the most abundant particles observed. Only in winter, statistically significant differences were observed in the average concentration of ingested MPs between oysters from TSB and SQB. In each bay, the highest concentrations were observed during winter. Seasonal differences between MP concentrations were only found in TSB. During summer, the content of MPs was compared between the digestive system and the rest of the soft tissue in organisms from each site, and statistically significant differences were not observed, except by one site in SQB. Polymers were identified via µ-FTIR-ATR spectrometry. Polyester, polyacrylonitrile, and rayon were the most common plastics detected. However, due to the low concentration of MPs found in oysters, its consumption does not represent a risk to human health. Moreover, MP concentrations in organisms appear to respond to variables, such as temporality and the water circulation dynamics within the bays.

The concentrations of 37 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their potential risk to human health were determined in fifty sardine muscle (Sardinella brasiliensis) samples collected along the southern Brazilian shelf. Parental and alkylated PAHs were identified and quantified using a pressurized liquid extraction with in-cell purification method and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry identification and quantification. The concentrations of Σ37 PAHs in muscle ranged between 6.02 and 4074 µg kg-1 wet weight, which are comparable to levels reported for commercially important fish worldwide. The most abundant compounds were pyrene and fluoranthene, which originate from both petrogenic and pyrolytic hydrocarbon inputs. In only 4% of the samples the benzo[a] pyrene equivalent concentration was above the threshold of 6 µg kg-1 suggested for safe fish consumption in Brazil. These findings will serve as baseline data for monitoring the quality of sardines consumed in the country and for studying fish populations.

The production of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Brazil exhibits the highest growth rate in the world and represents approximately 45% of the total fish production. The objective of the present study was to assess the risk for human health due the consumption of tilapia farmed in net cages in eight aquaculture parks in Brazil. The concentrations of pesticides (40 compounds), metals (Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Sn), arsenic, and cyanotoxins (microcystins) were evaluated in 16 fish from each park. Among analyzed pesticides, pyraclostrobin (0.18-0.32 mg/kg) and fenthion (0.0026-0.0037 mg/kg) exhibited values above the limit of quantification in the tilapia from Aracoiaba, Castanhão, and Ilha Solteira. The highest concentrations of As (0.44 µg/g) in fish tissues were found in Juara, Mn (0.21 µg/g) in Castanhão, and Zi (11.5 µg/g) were found in Três Marias. Furnas and Linhares exhibited the lowest metal concentrations. The estimated daily intake of muscle by the average Brazilian with 70 kg body weight is below the reference dose for all studied metals in all parks. Total free microcystins showed an accumulation pattern (muscle < gill < liver). The highest concentration in muscle was found in Castanhão (1043 µg/kg) samples. The results showed that fish exhibited metal, As, and pesticide tolerable daily intake (TDI) below the limit and pose low risk for human consumption. Otherwise, TDI for microcystins in fish of all studied parks was above the maximum level recommended by the World Health Organization, indicating that there exists a toxicity risk of fish consumption.

Emerging contaminants (EPs) represent a significant risk to human, ecological and environmental health. Although progress has been made in establishing monitoring in environmental matrices, health effects, legislation and control, there are still problems associated with regional bias and the types of EPs commonly assessed, which may underestimate the risk to health. In Latin America there are limited reports on environmental monitoring of EPs and it is generally focused on wastewater. This review identifies the current research deficiencies for emerging contaminants in the Latin American region, and we address the case of nonylphenol as an under-studied EP in the region. Nonylphenol is a degradation product of nonylphenol ethoxylate, which is a surfactant widely used in the manufacture of detergents in Latin America, environmental concentrations have been reported, predominantly in water, and the possible effects on species in this region have been also described. The importance of the review of this compound in the region lies in the fact that the Rotterdam Convention has catalogued nonylphenol as a severely restricted compound, so it is necessary to establish measures for its restriction and change to a sustainable technology. Finally, the example of NP presented in this review highlights the lack of regulation in Latin America regarding to EPs, resulting in the contamination of wastewater, effluents, rivers and drinking water. It is imperative to determine the potential effects, occurrence and concentration levels to improve the regulation of these pollutants in a timely manner.

This article contains data on the concentration of heavy metals and metalloids in the water of seven rivers in the Mantaro river watershed in the central Andes of Peru, collected during the autumn of 2019. The concentrations of Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn and As were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry to assess human risk. The concentration of heavy metals and arsenic varied according to the sector of the rivers evaluated. The cluster analysis identified four different groups among the observation sectors. The risk assessment for humans was conducted on the basis of exposure doses to heavy metals and arsenic in water by ingestion and dermal pathways, using standard methods established by USEPA. These data can be reused as a basis for estimating the cancer risk or as a comparison group for future risk studies. They can also be useful to public health policy makers when proposing surveillance and control programmes using remedial technologies.
