BACKGROUND: Marmosets, Callithrix spp, are small New World monkeys that have gained importance as an experimental animal model for human. Despite its use, information on its renal morphometry, vascularization, and location are limited. Therefore, this study will supply basic anatomy for applied studies and for comparative anatomy. METHODS: Fifty cadavers of Callithrix spp were collected on highways from the Atlantic Forest biome, identified and injected with a 10% formaldehyde solution. Later, the specimens were dissected and the measurements and topography of the kidneys and renal vessels were recorded. Both left and right kidneys were significantly larger in females. RESULTS: In the specimens studied, the average body length was 20.00 ± 2.46 cm in males and 20.50 ± 1.98 cm in females (p = .43). The kidneys of the Callithrix spp. were symmetrical in shape and resembled a "bean." They were also pale brown with a smooth surface. In males, the most frequent location of the right kidney was at the L1-L2 level (92%), while the location of the left kidney was between L2 and L3 (76%). In females, the most frequent location of the right kidney was at the L1-L2 level (56%), while the location of the left kidney was between L2 and L3 (32%) (Table 1). However, in seven (28%) males and nine (36%) females, the kidneys were at the same level. CONCLUSIONS: In both sexes, there was a positive and significant linear correlation between body length and kidney length. Regardless of the variable location of the kidneys in both sides and in either sexe, the right kidney was always located more cranially than the left, similar to observations in other non-human primates.

Background: Leg length discrepancy following hip arthroplasty causes dissatisfaction to the patient; thus, preoperative planning and implant selection is critical. The purpose of this study was to measure the articular-trochanteric distance (ATD) and femoral neck length (FNL) in our population and compare them to those of 3 of the most used uncemented stems. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 401 hip radiographs of healthy adults were collected between January and July 2022. The vertical ATD and FNL were measured. A linear regression model was used to identify the relationship between these measurements and age, sex, and height. A logistic regression model was used to assess the matching of native hips with the neck length of the stem. Results: Mean age was 60 years, and 74.56% were women. In 94.3% of hips, the ATD was negative, 3.73% neutral, and 2% positive. In our population, 0.25% of FNL were shorter than POLARSTEM (Smith & Nephew, UK), 10.72% shorter than MetaFix stem (Corin, UK), and 11.97% shorter than Corail stem (DePuy Synthes, USA). In the logistic regression analysis, matching for the POLARSTEM was associated with age but not with sex or height. Conversely, for MetaFix and Corail, stem matching was associated with sex and height. Conclusions: Anthropometric hip measurements vary among individuals, and variables such as age, sex, and height must be considered during preoperative planning and implant selection to avoid leg length discrepancy. Additional studies, including different implants, are required to guide surgeons in selecting a femoral stem that best matches the patient's native hip.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized individuals present high rates of malnutrition and loss of muscle mass (MM). Imaging techniques for assessing MM are expensive and scarcely available in hospital practice. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) proposed a framework for malnutrition diagnosis that includes simple measurements to assess MM, such as calf circumference (CC) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). This study aimed to analyze the validity of the GLIM criteria with CC and MUAC for malnutrition diagnosis, using Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) as the reference standard, in inpatients. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on 453 inpatient adults in a university hospital. The presence of malnutrition was assessed within 48 h of hospital admission using SGA and GLIM criteria using CC and MUAC as phenotypic criteria for malnutrition diagnosis. Accuracy, agreement tests, and logistic regression analysis adjusted for confounders were performed to test the validity of the GLIM criteria for malnutrition diagnosis. RESULTS: The patients were aged 59 (46-68) years, 51.4% were male, and 67.8% had elective surgery. Compared with SGA, the GLIM criteria using the two MM assessment measures showed good accuracy (area under the curve > 0.80) and substantial agreement (κ > 0.60) for diagnosing malnutrition. The highest sensitivity was obtained with GLIMCC (89%), whereas GLIMMUAC showed high specificity (>90%). Also, malnutrition identified by GLIMCC and GLIMMUAC was significantly associated with prolonged hospitalization and in-hospital death. CONCLUSION: In the absence of imaging techniques to assess MM, the use of CC and MUAC measurements from the GLIM criteria demonstrated satisfactory validity for diagnosing malnutrition in hospitalized patients.

PURPOSE: The relationship between dietary zinc (Zn) intake, metabolic diseases, and telomere length has been little explored in the children population. This observational cross-sectional study assesses the association between obesity (OB), cardiometabolic traits, telomere length, and dietary Zn intake in children with normal weight (NW) and OB from Mexico City. METHODS: Anthropometric data, blood pressure, biochemical measurements, the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and leucocyte telomere length (determined by quantitative-PCR) were analyzed in 171 children with NW and 172 with OB. Furthermore, dietary Zn intake was evaluated in 117 children NW and 120 with OB. RESULTS: Telomere shortening was associated with fasting plasma insulin (FPI) and HOMA-IR in NW (beta coefficient [ß]FPI = -0.022 ± 0.008, p = 0.009; ßHOMA-IR = -0.096 ± 0.040, p = 0.020) and OB (ßFPI = -0.007 ± 0.002, p = 0.003; ßHOMA-IR = -0.034 ± 0.012, p = 0.005) children. Dietary Zn intake resulted negatively associated with FPI (ß = -2.418 ± 0.764, p = 0.002) and HOMA-IR (ß = -0.399 ± 0.014, p = 0.009) in children with OB. Then, in children with OB, the association between FPI, HOMA-IR, and telomere shortening was evaluated separately in groups of low, medium, and high dietary Zn intake (according to tertiles). The association between FPI, HOMA-IR, and telomere shortening was not significant in the high Zn intake group (PFPI = 0.633; PHOMA-IR = 0.567). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that a high Zn intake may ameliorate the telomere shortening related to high FPI and HOMA-IR.

Density Functional Theory (DFT) is extensively used in theoretical and computational chemistry to study molecular and crystal properties across diverse fields, including quantum chemistry, materials physics, catalysis, biochemistry, and surface science. Despite advances in DFT hardware and software for optimized geometries, achieving consensus in molecular structure comparisons with experimental counterparts remains a challenge. This difficulty is exacerbated by the lack of automated bond length comparison tools, resulting in labor-intensive and error-prone manual processes. To address these challenges, we propose MolGC, a Molecular Geometry Comparator algorithm that automates the comparison of optimized geometries from different theoretical levels. MolGC calculates the mean absolute error (MAE) of bond lengths by integrating data from various DFT software. It provides interactive and customizable visualization of geometries, enabling users to explore different views for enhanced analysis. In addition, it saves MAE computations for further analysis and offers a comprehensive statistical summary of the results. MolGC effectively addresses complex graph labeling challenges, ensuring accurate identification and categorization of bonds in diverse chemical structures. It achieves a 98.91% average rate in correct bond label assignments on an antibiotics dataset, showcasing its effectiveness for comparing molecular bond lengths across geometries of varying complexity and size. MiRNAs, a class of non-coding RNA molecules, have emerged as critical modulators of telomere length and telomerase activity by finely tuning the expression of target genes (and not gene targets) within signaling pathways involved in telomere homeostasis. The primary objective of this systematic review was to compile and synthesize the existing body of knowledge on the role, association, and involvement of miRNAs in telomere length. Additionally, the review explored the regulation, function, and activation mechanism of the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene and telomerase activity in tumor cells. A comprehensive analysis of 47 selected articles revealed 40 distinct miRNAs involved in these processes. These miRNAs were shown to exert their function, in both clinical cases and cell line models, either directly or indirectly, regulating hTERT and telomerase activity through distinct molecular mechanisms. The regulatory roles of these miRNAs significantly affected major cancer phenotypes, with outcomes largely dependent on the tissue type and the cellular actions within the tumor cells, whereby they functioned as oncogenes or tumor suppressors. These findings strongly support the pivotal role of miRNAs in modulating telomere length and telomerase activity, thereby contributing to the intricate and complex regulation of telomere homeostasis in tumor cells. Moreover, they emphasize the potential of targeting miRNAs and key regulatory genes as therapeutic strategies to disrupt cancer cell growth and promote senescence, offering promising avenues for novel cancer treatments.

As the chronological age increases, there is a decrease in the telomere length (TL). Associations between TL and age-related diseases have been described. Since the major pathophysiological factors related to inadequate sleep (including sleep complaints and sleep disorders) contribute to the exacerbation of inflammation and oxidative stress, an association of sleep and TL has been proposed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between sleep-related variables with TL in a longitudinal framework. We used data derived from the EPISONO cohort, which was followed over 8 years. All individuals answered sleep-related questionnaires, underwent a full-night polysomnography (PSG), and had their blood collected for DNA extraction. The TL was measured through a quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. Age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking, physical activity status, and the 10 principal components (ancestry estimate) were considered covariables. Of the 1042 individuals in the EPISONO cohort, 68.3% agreed to participate in the follow-up study (n = 712). Baseline SpO2 (ß = 0.008, p = 0.007), medium SpO2 (ß = 0.013, p = 0.013), and total sleep time <90% (ß = -0.122, p = 0.012) had an effect on TL from the follow-up. The 8 year TL attrition was inversely associated with total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep architecture variables, wake after sleep onset, arousal index, oxygen-related variables baseline, and the presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We conclude that individuals with worse sleep quality, alterations in sleep architecture, and OSA had greater TL attrition over the 8 years. Using a longitudinal approach, these findings confirm previous cross-sectional evidence linking sleep with accelerated biological ageing.

Sauroleishmania spp. comprises one of the four Leishmania subgenera, which has been historically considered a non-pathogenic protozoan of reptiles. However, some strains appear to be transiently infective to mammals, and recent findings have detected these parasites in dogs and humans in areas where leishmaniasis is endemic. Herein, the digestion pattern of PCR-RFLP of the 234 bp-hsp70 fragment was evaluated as a simpler and cheaper tool to distinguish the Sauroleishmania species from the other Leishmania subgenera. As a result, the digestion of the 234 bp-hsp70 fragments with HaeIII produced a banding pattern specific to the four Sauroleishmania strains assessed. This technique could contribute to the identification of Leishmania parasites isolated from sandflies, reptiles, or even mammals in fieldworks as an alternative to the use of laborious and expensive methodologies.

A central challenge in hypothesis testing (HT) lies in determining the optimal balance between Type I (false positive) and Type II (non-detection or false negative) error probabilities. Analyzing these errors' exponential rate of convergence, known as error exponents, provides crucial insights into system performance. Error exponents offer a lens through which we can understand how operational restrictions, such as resource constraints and impairments in communications, affect the accuracy of distributed inference in networked systems. This survey presents a comprehensive review of key results in HT, from the foundational Stein's Lemma to recent advancements in distributed HT, all unified through the framework of error exponents. We explore asymptotic and non-asymptotic results, highlighting their implications for designing robust and efficient networked systems, such as event detection through lossy wireless sensor monitoring networks, collective perception-based object detection in vehicular environments, and clock synchronization in distributed environments, among others. We show that understanding the role of error exponents provides a valuable tool for optimizing decision-making and improving the reliability of networked systems.

Background/Objectives: Preterm birth (PTB) remains a significant global health challenge. Previous attempts to predict preterm birth in the first trimester using cervical length have been contradictory. The cervical consistency index (CCI) was introduced to quantify early cervical changes and has shown promise across various clinical scenarios in the mid-trimester, though testing in the first trimester is lacking. This study aims to assess the cervical consistency index performance in predicting preterm birth during the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, focused exclusively on research, women with singleton pregnancies, both with and without a history of spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB), were included. The primary outcome was sPTB before 37 weeks, with a secondary outcome of sPTB before 34 weeks. CCI measurements were taken between 11+0 to 13+6 weeks of gestation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated, and sensitivity and specificity were calculated for the optimal cut-off and for the 5th, 10th, and 15th percentile. Intraobserver and interobserver agreements were assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: Among the 667 patients analyzed, the rates of sPTB before 37 and 34 weeks were 9.2% (61/667) and 1.8% (12/667), respectively. The detection rates (DRs) for CCI predicting PTB before 37 and 34 weeks were 19.7% (12/61) and 33.3% (4/12). Negative predictive values were 91.8% (546/595) and 98.7% (588/596), while the areas under the curve (AUC) for sPTB before 37 and 34 weeks were 0.62 (95% CI: 0.54-0.69) and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.71-0.89), respectively. Of the 61 patients with preterm birth, 13 (21.3%) had a preterm birth history; in this group, the CCI percentile 10th identified 39% (5/13). Intraobserver ICC was 0.862 (95% CI: 0.769-0.920), and interobserver ICC was 0.833 (95% CI: 0.722-0.902). Conclusions: This study suggests that utilizing CCI in the first trimester of pregnancy could serve as a valuable tool for predicting preterm birth before 34 weeks of gestation, demonstrating robust intraobserver and interobserver reliability.
