RESUMO

This review is about Dr. Luiz Rodolpho Raja Gabaglia Travassos' scientific contributions to paracoccidioidomycosis as told by myself, Rosana Puccia, but co-written with Dr. Carlos P. Taborda, my younger scientific brother, collaborator, and dear friend. Dr. Travassos' pioneer papers and scientific insights covering biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, and molecular biology in the paracoccidiodomycosis area are key contributions that we acknowledge here, with focus on the Paracoccidioides antigen gp43. Importantly, we tell some personal stories behind the scene. Dr. Travassos' contribution to science is available in a number of quality publications, while his influence to hundreds of people who gravitated around him will be kept alive inside each one of us forever.

RESUMO

Luiz R. Travassos was one of the first students to receive a Ph.D. degree in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the largest federal university in Brazil and one of the oldest in the country. I had the privilege to be his first Ph.D. student. In this manuscript, I will share some of our professional and personal experiences, to give the readers a view about the scientific and human skills of one of the greatest men of science born in Brazil.

RESUMO

Brazilian medical mycology considerably expanded in the last decades due to the efforts of several pioneers who started and expanded mycology during the twentieth century. In this manuscript, we highlight some of the contributions of one of these pioneers: Professor Luiz R. Travassos, who started his career in the field of microbiology in the 1960s. We will discuss his contributions to the areas of medical mycology and glycobiology, with a focus on glycosphingolipids, sialic acids, and surface enzymes.
