Concentrations of one metalloid (As) and eight metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined in tissues (muscle, liver, and kidney) of eight snake species (Bothrops neuwiedi, Crotalus durissus, Dipsas mikanii, Epicrates crassus, Helicops modestus, Micrurus carvalhoi, Oxyrhopus guibei, and Oxyrhopus trigeminus) from Lagoa Santa Karst. Except for Cu and Zn, all other analyzed elements were detected in concentrations within the ranges previously reported for snakes inhabiting polluted areas, emphasizing Hg (specific Hg mean concentrations varied from 0.87 to 9.76 µg g-1 d.w). The highest mean concentrations of all elements except Zn were found in muscle samples of the false corals O. guibei (means ranged from 2.01 [Pb] to 9.76 [Hg]). The highest Zn mean concentration (13.77 µg g-1 d.w) was detected in the kidney of the water snake H. modestus. No significant correlation was found between element concentrations and body size for all species. Significant interorgan differences were observed for As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the three tissues in H. modestus. Significant interspecific differences were found in at least one organ for all elements. Significant pairwise differences were found between diet specialist species and between these species and broader diet species, while no significant difference was found between the broader diet species. The bioaccumulation of As and metals in snakes from Lagoa Santa Karst could be associated with natural rock dissolution and erosion processes but also with the wide-scale mining in the region and the increased agriculture and urbanization.

The use of mineral reinforcements in polymer matrix composites has emerged as an alternative for sustainable production, reducing waste and enhancing the physical and mechanical properties of these materials. This study investigated the impact of the melt flow index (MFI) of HDPE and the particle size of two mineral reinforcements, Bahia Beige (BB) and Rio Grande do Norte Limestone (CRN), on the composites. All composites were processed via extrusion, followed by injection, with the addition of 30 wt.% reinforcement. Chemical analyses revealed similar compositions with high CaO content for both minerals, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified predominantly calcite, dolomite, and quartz phases. Variations in the MFI, reinforcement type, and particle size showed a minimal influence on composite properties, supported by robust statistical analyses that found no significant differences between groups. Morphological analysis indicated that composites with lower MFI exhibited less porous structures, whereas larger particles of BB and CRN formed clusters, affecting impact resistance, which was attributed to poor interfacial adhesion.

The porosity-to-cement index (η/Civ) has been extensively applied to study the evolution of different types of soil stabilization. However, this index has still not been used to characterize soils cemented with crushed limestone waste (CLW). In this sense, this paper sought to analyze the applicability of the porosity-to-cement index over the unconfined compressive strength (qu) and initial stiffness at small deformations (Go) of clayey soil improved with CLW and Portland cement. In addition, a microstructural analysis (SEM and EDX tests) was also conducted. CLW addition increased soil strength and stiffness over time. Moreover, qu and Go compacted mixtures containing CLW have established a distinctive correlation. Chemical microanalyses have uncovered a complex interfacial interaction between the soil, cement, and fine CLW particles, leading to a notable reduction in porosity.

RESUMO

A new species of Tamanduamyia (Diptera, Mythicomyiidae, Mythicomyiinae) is described from Serra do Ramalho, Carinhanha, Bahia, Brazil, Tamanduamyia bichuettae sp. nov. The type series was actively collected with falcon tubes when resting at the entrance of a limestone cave in the rock exudations. The species is described and illustrated in detail, including the male terminalia and female spermathecae. This is the first record of a micro-bee fly species in the state of Bahia (Brazil) and may also represent the first recorded association of a Mythicomyiidae species with cave environments.

Two new species of Harpalyce are described from Cuba, H.revolutasp. nov. from a serpentine area in the northern part of E. Cuba and H.marianensissp. nov. from calcareous areas in the southern part of E. Cuba. Both have relatively small flowers, with an up to 6 mm long standard, and 2-3 mm long wings. Harpalycemarianensis is further characterized by strongly suberous (corky) young branches of a spongy consistence, deeply furrowed longitudinally, and by leaflets covered with a particular type of orange, apparently disk-shaped, sessile glands abaxially. Harpalycerevoluta, moreover, has suborbicular or broadly elliptic leaflets with a strongly recurved or sometimes revolute margin, secondary veins inconspicuous on either side; the foliar glands, by their morphology and anatomy, are of a different type. An epitype is designated for the name Harpalyce and its type, H.formosa; the distribution of both new species and their close relatives is mapped, and an updated identification key is offered, to cater for all 16 currently recognised Cuban species.


ResumenSe describen dos nuevas especies de Harpalyce para Cuba oriental, H.revolutasp. nov. de las áreas de serpentina del norte y H.marianensissp. nov. de áreas de formaciones calcáreas del sur. Ambas se caracterizan por tener flores pequeñas, con estandarte de hasta 6 mm de largo y alas de hasta 3 mm de largo. Harpalycemarianensis se distingue además por sus ramas jóvenes fuertemente suberosas, de consistencia esponjosa, profundamente surcadas longitudinalmente, y los folíolos cubiertos abaxialmente por un tipo particular de glándulas sésiles anaranjadas. Harpalycerevoluta, por su parte, tiene folíolos suborbiculares o anchamente ovales, con margen fuertemente recurvado o hasta revoluto, con venas secundarias inconspicuas en ambas caras, y glándulas foliares, por su morphología y anatomía, son de un tipo distinto. Se designa un epitipo para el nombre Harpalyce y su tipo, H.formosa. Se presenta un mapa de distribución de las nuevas especies y las relacionadas con ellas y se ofrece una clave de identificación actualizada, que incluye las 16 especies cubanas actualmente reconocidas.

Concrete is the most used construction material, needing large quantities of Portland cement. Unfortunately, Ordinary Portland Cement production is one of the main generators of CO2, which pollutes the atmosphere. Today, geopolymers are an emerging building material generated by the chemical activity of inorganic molecules without the Portland Cement addition. The most common alternative cementitious agents used in the cement industry are blast-furnace slag and fly ash. In the present work, the effect of 5 wt.% µ-limestone in mixtures of granulated blast-furnace slag and fly ash activated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at different concentrations was studied to evaluate the physical properties in the fresh and hardened states. The effect of µ-limestone was explored through XRD, SEM-EDS, atomic absorption, etc. The addition of µ-limestone increased the compressive strength reported values from 20 to 45 MPa at 28 days. It was found by atomic absorption that the CaCO3 of the µ-limestone dissolved in NaOH, precipitating Ca(OH)2 as the reaction product. SEM-EDS analysis showed a chemical interaction between C-A-S-H- and N-A-S-H-type gels with Ca(OH)2, forming (N, C)A-S-H- and C-(N)-A-S-H-type gels, improving mechanical performance and microstructural properties. The addition of µ-limestone appeared like a promising and cheap alternative for enhancing the properties of low-molarity alkaline cement since it helped exceed the 20 MPa strength recommended by current regulations for conventional cement.

Stochastic field reconstruction is a crucial technique to improve the accuracy of modern rock simulation. It allows explicit modelling of field conditions, often employed in uncertainty quantification analysis and upsampling and upscaling procedures. This paper presents a case-study of a framework for the stochastic reconstruction of rock's strain field using experimental data. The proposed framework is applied to a limestone outcrop in which the strain field is measured using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Assuming that the strain fields of these rocks are well-represented by Gaussian random fields, we capitalize on the algorithms used for training Gaussian processes to estimate the correlation family and the parameters that best represent these fields. Although the spherical and exponential kernels often correspond to the best fit, our results depict that each field shall be analyzed separately and no general rule can be defined. We show that the method is versatile and can be employed in any measurable field reasonably represented by a Gaussian random field. Therefore, the present work aims to highlight the following topics:•A study-case of stochastic strain field reconstruction aims to contribute to uncertainty quantification of rock experimental procedures.•A stochastic minimization algorithm is presented to solve the maximum likelihood estimation to define the most suitable hyper-parameter: correlation length.•The calculated hyper-parameters of a set correlation functions are presented to best reproduce the strain fields of a rock sample.

Ca and Mg are the most important chemical elements in lime. Properly measuring Ca and Mg contents is essential to assess the quality of lime products. Quality control guarantees the adequate use of lime in industrial processes, in soils, and helps avoiding adulteration. Proximal sensors can aid in this process by determining Ca and Mg contents easily, rapidly and without producing chemical waste. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use an environmentally-friendly method of analyzing the quality of lime. We studied 1) the use of portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) to predict concentrations of Ca and Mg in lime, 2) tested if NixPro™ sensor can improve prediction accuracy and 3) tested if sample preparation methods (grinding) affect analyses. 74 samples of lime were analyzed by two different laboratories (lab. 1 = 38, lab. 2 = 36). All samples submitted to pXRF and NixPro™ analyses. Sensor analyses were done in whole (CP) and ground (AQ) samples to test the effect of sample preparation in prediction performance. High correlation was found between Ca and Mg contents measured via pXRF and laboratory analyses. Mg-CP presented the highest correlation coefficient (r = 0.81); Mg-AQ, the lowest (0.57). Predictions presented good performance (R2 > 0.68); Mg had the best results (0.86). Separating models per laboratory showed that some datasets are harder to model, probably due to variability in the source material (limestone). The addition of NixPro™ data contributed to improve prediction accuracy, although slightly. Predictions using CP samples presented the best results, especially for Mg, indicating that grinding is not necessary. This pioneer study demonstrated that fused proximal sensors can be used to rapidly and easily determine contents of Ca and Mg in soil amendments without producing chemical waste.

In this study, the photocatalytic activity of coating mortars with synthetized and commercial TiO2 nanoparticles added has been evaluated at 2, 3 and 5% by weight of cement by calculating the degradation efficiency of methyl orange and red wine dyes exposed to both visible-light and UV radiation; also, the self-cleaning effect of coatings exposed to weather conditions (warm sub-humid climate) was assessed. TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol-gel method to a low synthesis temperature and characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results show synthesized TiO2 particles in anatase phase with a crystallite size of 14.69 nm, and hemispherical particles with sizes of submicron order. The addition percentage with the best performance in the coating mortars was 3%, with both commercial and synthesized TiO2; however, coating mortars with synthesized TiO2 exhibited the highest degradation efficiency for both dyes when they were exposed to visible light, while mortars with commercial TiO2 exhibited the highest degradation efficiency when exposed to UV radiation. In addition, in coating mortars with synthesized TiO2, the self-cleaning effect was evident from the beginning of exposure to weather, reaching the largest dye-free surface at the end of exposure. The compressive strength increased significantly in mortars with TiO2 addition.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a material developed to maximize the engineering characteristics of hydraulic concrete, in terms of durability and mechanical properties, but the adoption of this technology in practice has not turned out as desired, mainly due to the high amounts of cement and silica fume required for its production, and for its consequences on both economic and ecological costs. As an option to improve the impact of UHPC, both on costs and on sustainability, this work evaluates four UHPC series with metakaolin additions of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, and the substitution of 37.5% of the Portland cement volume by limestone or quartz filler. The compressive strength, the bulk electrical resistivity and a set of tests for microstructural characterization (TGA, XRD and quantitative EDS) were utilized to better understand the role of calcite on the hydration and pozzolanic reactions in ternary Portland cement-metakaolin-limestone filler. Results indicate that the reaction of calcite is scarce and should be considered as a mere filler, as no increase in AFm phases were found. Nevertheless, the ternary mixture with 15% of metakaolin in addition to cement, and with 37.5% of the Portland cement volume substituted by limestone filler, was the one that presented the best performance in terms of compressive strength and bulk electrical resistivity. The results of the microstructural characterization indicate that the high kaolin content in the metakaolin originated the most significant hydration and pozzolanic reactions development between the ages of 7 and 28 days, as between 28 and 91 the reaction remained dormant. In general, the whole set of results included in this work indicate that limestone filler doesn't act as a better filler than other kind of powders when used in ternary Portland cement-metakaolin- filler systems.
