RESUMO

Fish are excellent bioindicators and can reveal the presence of plastic in the environment. Diagnosing the composition and abundance of polymers in the fish diet makes it possible to evaluate their point sources and possible trophic transfers. We aimed to use the gastrointestinal contents of Poecilia reticulata in subtropical urban streams to detect the occurrence, shape, color, size, and chemical composition of polymers. For this, the diet of 240 individuals was analyzed using the volumetric method, and the microplastics (MPs; < 5 mm) recorded were characterized using Raman spectroscopy. Individuals predominantly consumed organic detritus and aquatic macroinvertebrates, with higher proportions of Diptera. A total of 111 plastic particles (< 0.5 to 12 mm) were recorded, and a subset of 14.4% was subjected to a micro-Raman spectrometer (830 nm excitation). The occurrence of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) with phthalocyanine dye was recorded. Some fragments could not be identified by Raman, but they contained indigo blue dye. Poecilia reticulata had a predominantly detritivorous diet with a record of plastic consumption, reflecting environmental pollution. Our results demonstrate that individuals of P. reticulata have ingested MPs in urban streams. This reinforces the need for future studies on the relationship between the presence of MPs in fish and the level of pollution in streams, comparisons with species of different feeding habits, and the potentially harmful effects on the entire biota.

RESUMO

In this study, the impact of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, 1,2-butene oxide, and 1,2-pentene oxide on the polymerization of propylene at an industrial level was investigated, focusing on their influence on the catalytic efficiency and the properties of polypropylene (PP) without additives. The results show that concentrations between 0 and 1.24 ppm of these epoxides negatively affect the reaction's productivity, the PP's mechanical properties, the polymer's fluidity index, and the PP's thermal properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed bands for the Ti-O bond and the Cl-Ti-O-CH2 bonds at 430 to 475 cm-1 and 957 to 1037 cm-1, respectively, indicating the interaction between the epoxides and the Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The thermal degradation of PP in the presence of these epoxides showed a similar trend, varying in magnitude depending on the concentration of the inhibitor. Sample M7, with 0.021 ppm propylene oxide, exhibited significant mass loss at both 540 °C and 600 °C, suggesting that even small concentrations of this epoxide can markedly increase the thermal degradation of PP. This pattern is repeated in samples with 1,2-butene oxide and 1,2-pentene oxide. These results highlight the need to strictly control the presence of impurities in PP production to optimize both the final product's quality and the polymerization process's efficiency.

RESUMO

Natural fiber reinforcements have the potential to enhance mechanical properties, thereby improving performance and durability in various applications. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated the impact of environmental degradation over 120 days on reprocessed polypropylene (PP) reinforced with corn husk fiber (CHF) composites. The manufactured systems underwent rigorous analysis using various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and tensile testing. These analyses revealed that climatic conditions significantly influenced (p < 0.05) the mechanical properties of all systems. Photodegradation led to surface morphological changes and chemical structures. Regardless, adding CHF filler proved a key factor, as it allowed for less susceptibility to environmental degradation than the reprocessed matrix. These findings, therefore, provide robust evidence supporting the feasibility of using CHF composites for manufacturing agricultural containers.

RESUMO

Organic phosphoester (OPE) antioxidants are currently required due to their contribution to enhancing the quality of polymers, including polypropylene (PP). In this research, an integral methodology is presented for the efficient extraction of bis(2,4-dicumylphenyl) pentaerythritol diphosphite from industrial wastewater. Upon employing the solid-phase extraction (SPE) technique, the recovered compound is subjected to a comprehensive analysis of the recovered compound using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry (MS), thermal analysis (TGA), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Subsequently, purified Bis(2,4-dicumylphenyl) pentaerythritol diphosphite was evaluated as a thermo-oxidative stabilizer after incorporation into PP resins. The relative standard deviation (RSD), Error (Er), linearity (R2), and percentage (%) recovery were less than 2.6, 2.5, more significant than 0.9995, and greater than 96%, respectively, for the inter-day and intra-day tests of the chromatographic method and the SPE. Except for chloroform, which was necessary due to the solubility properties of the investigated analyte, the use of environmentally friendly solvents, such as methanol and acetonitrile, was considered during the development of this research. The OPE extracted from industrial wastewater was characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, TGA, and MS, allowing the elucidation of the structure of Bis(2,4-dicumylphenyl) pentaerythritol diphosphite (BDPD). The recovered OPE was mixed with PP resins, allowing it to improve its thermal properties and minimize its thermo-oxidative degradation. Organophosphorus flame retardant (OPE)' concentration in wastewater is alarming, ranging from 1179.0 to 4709.6 mg L-1. These exceed toxicity thresholds for aquatic organisms, emphasizing global environmental risks. Using a validated solid-phase extraction (SPE) technique with over 94% recovery, the study addresses concerns by removing organic contaminants and supporting circular economy principles. The high economic and environmental significance of recovering BDPD underscores the need for urgent global attention and intervention.

RESUMO

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a fascinating phenomenon where specific molecules exhibit enhanced fluorescence upon aggregation. This unique property has revolutionized the design and development of new fluorescent materials for different applications, from biosensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to biomedical imaging and diagnostics. Researchers are creating sensitive and selective sensing platforms, opening new avenues in material science and engineering by harnessing the potential of AIE. To expand the knowledge in this field, this study explored the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of two polymers, namely polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polypropylene glycol (PPG) of low molecular weight (MW) using fluorescence spectroscopy and absorbance (UV). PEG-300 and PPG-725 were the most fluorescent polymers at UV of the ten investigated. Interestingly, AIE did not correlate linearly with molecular weight (MW), and monobutyl ether substitution in PEG with a similar MW substantially altered its AIE. Furthermore, fluorescence precisely quantified low polymer concentrations in water, and non-aqueous solvents suppressed AIE, suggesting potential for AIE manipulation. These findings enhance our understanding of AIE in polymers, fostering the development of novel materials for applications such as biosensors.

RESUMO

The flammability properties of polymers and polymeric composites play an important role in ensuring the safety of humans and the environment; moreover, flame-retardant materials ensure a greater number of applications. In the present study, we report the obtaining of polypropylene (PP) composites contain a mixture of two green flame retardants, lignin and clinoptilolite, by melt extrusion. These additives are abundantly found in nature. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical properties, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), cone calorimetry, UL-94, and carbonized residues analysis were carried out. TGA analysis shows that PPGFR-10 and PPGFR-20 compounds presented better thermal stability with respect to PP without flame retardants. The conical calorimetric evaluation of the composites showed that PPGFR-10 and PPGFR-20 presented decreases in peak heat release rates (HRRs) of 9.75% and 11.88%, respectively. The flammability of the composites was evaluated with the UL-94 standard, and only the PPGFR-20 composite presented the V-0 and 5VB classification, which indicates good flame-retardant properties. Additives in the polymer matrix showed good dispersion with few agglomerates. The PPGFR-20 composite showed an FRI value of 1.15, higher percentage of carbonized residues, and UL-94 V-0 and 5VB rating, suggesting some kind of synergy between lignin and clinoptilolite, but only at high flame-retardant concentrations.

RESUMO

Polypropylene (PP) films are crucial in various industrial applications, from packaging to medical products. However, a common challenge in PP manufacturing is the presence of gel-like defects. These gels are minor defects on the surface of the films that significantly affect the physicochemical, mechanical, and organoleptic properties of the films, compromising the quality of the final product. This first research focuses on developing and validating an in-line optical method to replace the international method ASTM D 3351-93. The main objective was to create a methodology that has the same scope and analytical performance as those reported by ASTM D 3351-93 in such a way that it can compete with it in terms of precision and accuracy, thus allowing end users to this ASTM, such as PP producers, PP marketers, PP film producers, among others internationally, can use this new methodology with necessary analytical support. This analytical methodology integrates the PP extrusion zones, the film processing stages, and the optical zone for reading and processing analytical data. Additionally, it has the advantage of working with a sample size that is even more representative of the population and has less human error since only one operator is required to carry out the test; this method also has much shorter response times. The developed prototype had 14 online stages that allowed representative quantities of samples to be taken and processed thermally and mechanically for ideal optical measurement. For the online method, a 6-point calibration curve is carried out at concentrations of 40, 10, 5, 2, 1 and 0 ppm for the gel or defect sizes of 200, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 µm, showing excellent linearity where the correlation coefficient varied between 0.997 and 0.999, the limits of detection (LOD) varied between 0.85 and 2.61 and the limits of quantification (LOQ) ranged between 2.82 and 8.71. The statistical analyzes by ANOVA of the comparison between the ASTM D 3351-93 method and the proposed simultaneous method indicate that the p value of the evaluation of the means was 0.946, which suggests that the means are not statistically different. To complement, the Tukey test was carried out at 95 %, indicating that the methods have statistical equivalence.•Process optimization•Determination of defects or imperfections in PP films.

RESUMO

The carbonyl index aims to measure the degradation level and is used in plastic degradation research as a proxy for the general degradation level of collected plastic pieces. According to the choices for carbonyl index calculation, comparison using this index is prevented and must be unveiled by the authors, which does not always happen. In order to study the proper usage of the carbonyl index, regarding the choice of the reference band and the usage of the band intensity or the absorption area, we systematically reviewed the methodologies used for polypropylene as a case study. Based on 95 studies gathered from 2000 to 2024, two main methods were used to determine the carbonyl index: the ratio between the carbonyl band area and the reference band area (33.68%) and the ratio between the highest intensity of the carbonyl band and the reference band (66.31%). The reference band of choice and the type of calculation method produce different carbonyl index values for the same spectra and mean different information, preventing comparison among works with different calculations.

RESUMO

This study outlines the investigation into how the compounds CO2, CO, and O2 interact with the active center of titanium (Ti) on the surface of MgCl2 and how these interactions impact the productivity of the Ziegler-Natta catalyst, ultimately influencing the thermal stability of the produced polypropylene. The calculations revealed that the adsorption energies of Ti-CO2-CO and O2 were -9.6, -12.5, and -2.32 Kcal/mol, respectively. Using the density functional theory in quantum calculations, the impacts of electronic properties and molecular structure on the adsorption of CO, O2, and CO2 on the Ziegler-Natta catalyst were thoroughly explored. Additionally, the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy of adsorption were examined. It was discovered that strong adsorption and a significant energy release (-16.2 kcal/mol) during CO adsorption could explain why this gas caused the most substantial reductions in the ZN catalyst productivity. These findings are supported by experimental tests showing that carbon monoxide has the most significant impact on the ZN catalyst productivity, followed by carbon dioxide, while oxygen exerts a less pronounced inhibitory effect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic resulted in shortages of supplies, which limited the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. As a contingency strategy, polypropylene (PP) oxygenation membranes were used. This study describes the clinical outcomes in patients on ECMO with PP compared to poly-methylpentene (PMP) oxygenation membranes. METHODS: Retrospective cohort of patients in ECMO support admitted between 2020 and 2021. RESULTS: A total of 152 patients with ECMO support were included, 71.05% were men with an average age of 42 (SD 9.91) years. Veno-venous configuration was performed in 75.6% of cases. The PP oxygenation membranes required more changes 22 (63.1%), than the PMP Sorin® 24 (32,8%) and Euroset® 15 (31,9%) (p.0.022). The main indication for membrane change was low oxygen transfer for PP at 56.2%, Sorin® at 50%, and Euroset® at 14.8%. Renal replacement therapy was the most frequent complication with PP membrane in 22 patients (68.7%) Sorin® 25 patients (34.2%), and Euroset® 15 patients (31.9%) (p 0.001) without statistically significant differences in mortality. CONCLUSION: PP oxygenation membranes was a useful and feasible strategy. It allowed a greater disponibility of ECMO support for critically ill in a situation of great adversity during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
