RESUMO

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of nanoemulsions using combined synthetic anthelmintics, thiabendazole (TBZ), levamisole (LEV), and ivermectin (IVM), with carvacryl acetate (CA) against Haemonchus contortus, and also tested the presence and absence of alginate (ALG). The anthelmintic effect of the CA/TBZ nanoemulsion was evaluated in the egg hatch test (EHT). The effects of CA/IVM and CA/LEV nanoemulsions were evaluated in the larval development test (LDT). The emulsions CA/TBZ/ALG and CA/TBZ showed a multimodal profile, with most particles on the nanometric scale. The encapsulation efficiency in CA/TBZ/ALG was 80.25%, and that in CA/LEV/ALG was 89.73%. In the EHT, CA/TBZ and CA/TBZ/ALG showed mean combination indices (CIs) of 0.55 and 0.36, respectively, demonstrating synergism in both. In LDT, CA/IVM had an average CI of 0.75, and CA/LEV and CA/LEV/ALG showed CI values of 0.4 and 0.93, respectively. It was concluded that CA/TBZ showed a synergistic interaction, and CA/TBZ/ALG showed an enhanced effect. In addition, the matrix brought stability to the product, encouraging its improvement to obtain higher efficacy.

RESUMO

The assessment of pesticide residue levels demands fast, low cost and easy-to-use procedures which are not found in conventional methods. In this work, SERS substrates based on the deposition of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on common office paper were prepared using a wax printer. These substrates combined with Data Driven Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogies (DD-SIMCA), a one-class classifier algorithm, were used for detection of pesticide residues in water extracts of mango peels. Paper-based substrates made sample collection easier compared with conventional SERS methods, since few microliters of the pesticide aqueous extract from fruit peels needed to be deposited onto the substrate. Moreover, one-class classifiers dismiss the need for quantification or calibration curves. Classification of a fruit with residue levels in accordance to regulatory bodies' limits is based on a mathematical threshold. Just as in an authentication problem, all the possibilities for a given analysed fruit are now restricted to agreeing or not agreeing with current regulations. The performance of the one-class model was demonstrated by detecting thiabendazole (TBZ) residues at various mango samples, with all results being confirmed by HPLC-DAD analysis. The final model could distinguish samples with TBZ levels above the ones allowed by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency with 94% of selectivity and 92% of sensitivity, even in the presence of other pesticides.

RESUMO

The simultaneous adsorption of both imazalil (IMZ) and thiabendazole (TBZ) fungicides in a Cu2+-exchanged Mt was studied in this work. Kinetic studies were used to determine the rate law which describes the adsorption of individual fungicides onto the adsorbent. Adsorption isotherm of individual and combined fungicides was done to evaluate synergic or antagonistic effects. The Mt-Cu material considerably improved TBZ and/or IMZ adsorption from aqueous suspensions with respect to raw Mt, leading to removal efficiencies higher than 99% after 10 min of contact time for TBZ and IMZ Ci = 15 and 40 mg/L, respectively, when a solid dosage = 1 g/L was used. The adsorption sites involved were determined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) determinations and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), indicating that fungicides were bonded to Cu2+ cations, while the rate limiting step was the formation of coordination bonds. The adsorption mechanism proposed is that of ligand exchange between water and fungicide molecules in the metal coordination sphere. The single-crystal structure for the IMZ-Cu2+ complex indicated that four molecules were bounded to the copper centers, while two molecules of TBZ are bounded to copper explaining the higher IMZ uptake capacity for the Mt-Cu material. RESUMO

Humic-like substances (HLS) extracted from urban wastes have been tested as auxiliaries for the photo-Fenton removal of thiabendazole (TBZ) under simulated sunlight. Experimental design methodology based on Doehlert matrices was employed to check the effects of hydrogen peroxide concentration, HLS amount as well as TBZ loading; this last parameter was studied in the range 25-100 mg/L, to include values below and above the limit of solubility at pH = 5. Very satisfactory results were reached when TBZ was above solubility if HLS and H2O2 amounts were high. This could be attributed to an interaction of HLS-TBZ that enhances the solubility of the pollutant. Additional evidence supporting the latter interaction was obtained by fluorescence measurements (excitation emission matrices) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC).

RESUMO

Thiabendazole (TBZ) is an ionizable anthelmintic agent that belongs to the class of benzimidazoles. It is widely used in veterinary medicine and as a fungicide in agriculture. Sorption and desorption are important processes influencing transport, transformation, and bioavailability of xenobiotic compounds in soils; data related to sorption capacity are therefore needed for environmental risk assessments. The aim of this work was to assess the sorption potential of TBZ in four Brazilians soils (sandy, sandy-clay, and clay soils), using batch equilibrium experiments at three pH ranges (2.3-3.0, 3.8-4.2, and 5.5-5.7). The Freundlich sorption coefficient (K F) ranged from 9.0 to 58 µg1-1/n  (mL) 1/n  g-1, with higher values generally observed at the lower pH ranges (2.3-3.0 and 3.8-4.2) and for clay soils. The highest organic carbon-normalized sorption coefficients (KOC) obtained at pH 3.8-5.7 (around the natural pH range of 4.1-5.0) for both clay soils and sandy-clay soil were 3255 and 2015 mL g-1, respectively. The highest correlations K F vs SOM (r = 0.70) and K F vs clay content (r = 0.91) were observed at pH 3.8-4.2. Our results suggest that TBZ sorption/desorption is strongly pH dependent and that its mobility could be higher in the studied soils than previously reported in soils from temperate regions.

The treatment of soybean seeds by fungicides has been used as an important tool in pathogen control. The objective of this work was to verify the performance of soybean seeds treated with fungicide and film coating, prior and after storage. Five seed lots, cultivar Monsoy 6101, were treated with thiabendazole+thiram without polymer, carbendazin+thiram without polymer, without fungicide (control), without polymer, and treatments by film coating (with polymer). The physiological and sanitary quality of the seeds was evaluated initially and after six months storage, under environmental conditions, according to the following characteristics: water content, test of germination and emergence on tray, blotter test and cold test. The film coating associated with fungicides does not affect the physiological quality of soybean seeds and the soybean seed treatment with the fungicides thiabendazole+thiram and carbendazin+thiram improves performance and sanitary quality.

RESUMO

Thiabendazole, classified as antiparasitic and also used as an antifungal drug, can be found as otological solution indicated for treatment of parasitic and fungal external otitis in small animals. Malassezia pachydermatis is a yeast recognized as a normal inhabitant on the skin and mucous membranes of dogs andcats. However, it is considered an opportunistic agent that causes external otitis and dermatitis in these animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of thiabendazole against 51 isolates of M. pachydermatis using the CLSI Broth Microdilution method that has been adapted for this yeast species (NCCLS, 2002). Based on this test, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) of thiabendazol was calculated. Subsequently, the susceptibility of each isolate against this antifungal was determined. It wasobserved that the MIC of thiabendazole against M. pachydermatis ranged from 0.03 to > 4 μg/mL. A total of 13.7% of the isolates were found to be resistant, 47.1% were intermediate and 39.2% were sensitive to the drug. The rate of resistance of the yeasts against thiabendazole was similar to the results previously obtained with other antifungals, while the adapted broth microdilution technique used in this study proved to be efficient.

RESUMO

The in vitro genotoxicity of imazalil and thiabendazole fungicides and the insecticide chlorpyrifos, compounds used in Costa Rican banana plantations, was evaluated with the single-cell gel electrophoresis technique (comet assay). The comet assay is a simple, rapid and low cost technique for quantification of DNA damage. This assay detects DNA single-strand breaks and alkali-labile sites in individual cells. The effects were analyzed by using human lymphocytes exposed to doses of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 microg/ml of each pesticide for 30 min at 37 degrees C. The cells were embedded in agarose, lysed, subjected to alkaline electrophoresis (pH >13) for 20 min at 25V, neutralized and dehydrated to be stained with a fluorescent dye and later comets visualization with the epifluorescence microscope. Chlorpyrifos and imazalil induced significant DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner. Chlorpyrifos was the major inductor of DNA breaks. These results indicate that both are genotoxic compounds in vitro. Thiabendazole fungicide did not induced DNA damage using the comet assay for all concentrations tested.
