Coastal wetlands are subjected to increasing tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) pollution, whereas knowledge of TBBPA degradation in marine environments is lacking. The changes of bacterial communities in TBBPA-polluted soil covered with halophytes were investigated. TBBPA could be degraded in the halophyte-covered saline-alkali soil in a microcosm experiment. Higher TBBPA removal occurred in the soil of Kandelia obovata compared with soils covered with Suaeda australis and Phragmites australis within 56 days of cultivation. The rhizosphere soils of S. australis, P. australis, and K. obovata mainly involved the classes of Bacteroidia, Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Anaerolineae. Additionally, manganese oxidation, aerobic anoxygenic phototrophy, and fermentation functions were higher in the rhizosphere soil of K. obovata after TBBPA addition. This study supports that using suitable local halophytic plants is a promising approach for degrading TBBPA-contaminated coastal soil.

AIM: Incorporate species' trait information together with climate projections for associated habitat to assess the potential vulnerability of rodent taxa to climate change. LOCATION: Oaxaca State, Mexico. METHODS: We used a trait-based approach together with climate exposure models to evaluate the vulnerability of rodent species to projected climate conditions in the study region. Vulnerability was estimated based on three factors: (a) Level of climatic exposure that species are projected to experience across their current statewide range; (b) inherent species-specific sensitivity to stochastic events; and (c) species' capacity to cope with climate change effects. We defined species as inherently sensitive if they had any of the following: restricted geographic distribution in Mexico; narrow altitudinal range; low dispersal ability; or long generation length. RESULTS: Vulnerability varied depending on the climate change scenario applied. Under the MPI general circulation model and current emissions trends, by 2099, all species evaluated were projected to have some level of threat (vulnerable for at least one factor), with 4 out of 55 species vulnerable for all three factors, 29 for two factors, and 22 for one factor. Six out of ten rodent species endemic to Oaxaca were vulnerable for two or more factors. We found that species with narrow and restricted-range distributions combined with low adaptive capacity were projected to be particularly vulnerable. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: By including species-specific trait information in climate exposure assessments, researchers can contextualize and enhance their understanding about how climate change is likely to affect individual taxa in an area of interest. As such, studies like this one provide more relevant threat assessment information than exposure analyses alone and serve as a starting point for considering how climatic changes interact with an array of other variables to affect native species across their range.

A leishmaniose tegumentar americana, doença endêmica da região noroeste do Paraná, é transmitida por flebotomíneos ao homem e a animais como cães, tatu, gambá e roedores silvestres. A doença vem ocorrendo em locais de derrubadas de matas e às margens de rios e lagoas com vegetação arbórea, onde o homem entra em contato com o inseto infectado. Esta doença constitui-se num problema de saúde pública devido à ocorrência de surtos epidêmicos em todo o Paraná. Em decorrência da importância de se conhecer áreas endêmicas, este trabalho utilizou dados de fichas epidemiológicas de pacientes atendidos no período de 1999 a 2004 associado às áreas de desmatamento identificadas por técnicas e produtos de sensoriamento remoto por satélite. Os resultados mostraram que a ocorrência de casos em municípios da região coincidem com as prováveis áreas supostas de infecção dos pacientes.


American cutaneous leishmaniasis, an endemic disease in the northwestern region of Paraná, Brazil, is transmitted by phlebotomines to man and animals like dogs, armadillos, opossums and wild rodents. This disease has been occurring in places where forests have been felled and on the banks of rivers and lakes with arboreal vegetation, where man comes into contact with infected insects. This disease is a public health problem because of the occurrence of epidemic outbreaks throughout Paraná. Because of the importance of finding out about endemic areas, this study used epidemiological file data on patients attended between 1999 and 2004. These data were correlated with areas of forest felling that were identified by means of satellite remote sensing techniques and products. The results showed that the occurrences of cases in the municipalities of this region coincided with the presumed likely areas for patient infection.
