RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Simplexvirus humanalpha1 (HuAHV-1) are common anthropozoonosis reported in marmosets but rare in howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.). METHODS: Necropsy of two brown-howler monkeys (A. caraya) and one red-howler monkey (A. guariba clamitans) from different zoo collections were performed. Fragments of all organs were examined through microscopy. Samples were submitted to IHC for Simplexvirus humanalpha 2 (HuAHV-2) [sin. Herpesvirus simplex type 2] and PCR. RESULTS: Grossly, only the A. guariba showed liver lesions characterized by multifocal, pinpoint white areas corresponding microscopically as random necrotizing herpetic hepatitis and ulcerative glossitis. Both A. caraya showed necrotizing meningoencephalitis with Cowdry A-type body inclusions within neurons and astrocytes. Immunolabeling for HuAHV-1/2 was observed in the tongue, liver, and brain. HuAHV-1 was confirmed in all samples by PCR, Sanger sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses. CONCLUSION: Necrotizing meningoencephalitis was appreciated in 2/3 of animals, and it is associated with neurologic signs. Along with ulcerative glossitis, a hallmark lesion in marmosets, it was present in one animal. Regarding herpetic hepatitis, it is not frequent in monkeys and occurs mainly in immunocompromised animals. HuAHV-1 infection was confirmed corroborating with a human source. This is the second report on captive black-howler monkeys and the first gross, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular description of herpetic hepatitis and ulcerative glossitis in red-howler monkeys (A. guariba).

RESUMO

Vitamins are organic compounds present in low concentrations in food, performing vital and specific cell metabolism functions. Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell formation in the bone marrow and its deficiency is caused, mainly, by gastrointestinal malabsorption. In addition to systemic manifestations, oral signs and symptoms have also been associated to this condition such as glossitis, papillary atrophy, painful erythema areas, burning sensation, dysgeusia, lingual paresthesia and itching. This study aims to report four cases of oral manifestations caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. All patients presented oral mucosa lesions. Vitamin B12 deficiency was diagnosed based in clinical characteristics and complementary exams. Oral supplementation for vitamin B12 deficiency was conducted/realized in three patients, while one patient was treated with parenteral doses. All of them showed partial or total remission of the signs and symptoms.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The correlation between oral lesions and atopy is not new, but few studies have investigated the prevalence of mucosal changes in diseases within the atopic spectrum, leading to conflicting data. Some studies found a possible relationship between geographic tongue, transient lingual papillitis and atopic diseases. AIM: To investigate the frequency of geographic tongue and fungiform papillary glossitis in patients with atopic diseases, and its correlation with serum IgE levels and skin test results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample was comprised of participants with atopic diseases paired with participants who received negative puncture skin tests. All were submitted to stomatological and medical evaluations, prick test and oral cytopathological. RESULTS: The female sex was more numerous in both groups. Mean age was 21 years. A total of 60 diagnoses of atopic diseases were obtained, with allergic rhinitis being the most prevalent. Fungiform papillary glossitis was the most frequent oral lesion in both groups, while geographic tongue was present in 2 cases (2%) in the test group and 2 (2%) in the control group. Atopic patients with fungiform papillary glossitis presented high serum IgE levels. In atopic patients with geographic tongue, the prick test positively identified extracts of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (100%) and Dermatophagoides farinae (100%). CONCLUSION: Due to the low frequency of geographic tongue lesions found in the study, it is no possible to conclude if that could be an oral manifestation of atopy. However fungiform papillary glossitis is a common alteration in atopic and non-atopic patients and has a relationship with high IgE serum levels. However, the consolidation of this result requires a larger sample size.

RESUMO

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a challenge for the veterinary practitioner since its etiology and treatments are still undefined. The present paper investigated the role of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in the severity of the FCGS. Oral mucosal biopsies obtained from 19 cats with FCGS were divided into two groups according to their FIV serology status. Later, the clinical lesion score was correlated with the histopathological grade of FCGS lesions and the degree of immunostaining in both groups. Most of the animals had significant histological changes; however, no correlation with FIV immunostaining intensity was observed. It was concluded that the presence of FIV infection or the animal's seropositivity status does not seem to interfere with the severity of clinical signs nor the degree of histopathological changes when compared to the seronegative group.(AU)

We describe the epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of a herpes virus simples infection in a white-tufted-ear marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) in the semiarid region of Paraiba. The disease occurred in a female marmoset, seven-month-old, which presented prostration and ulcerative lesions in the skin and oral cavity. The owners also informed that a child with oral herpetic lesions shared food with the animal. At necropsy, there were vesicular and ulcerative lesions on the labial commissure, soft palate and tongue were observed. On histopathology, there was facial dermatitis, stomatitis and pustular and ulcerative glossitis associated with nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis and vasculitis containing intranuclear Cowdry A type inclusion bodies in epithelial cells, neurons and glial cells. The diagnosis of herpesvirus simplex infection was performed by the epidemiological, clinical and pathological data and confirmed by immunohistochemistry.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine whether Human Papillomavirus was present in tongue and periodontium of periodontally healthy and diseased women who had genital lesions caused by the virus. Thirty non-menopausal women, systemically healthy and diagnosed with gynecological HPV lesions, were referred by the Gynecology Service Department of the University Maternal Neonatal Hospital of the City of Cordoba. Anamnesis, oral mucosa examination and periodontal clinical assessment were performed. Three brush samples were taken per patient: two from the same periodontal location (external epithelium of the gum and internal epithelium of the periodontal sulcus/pocket), and the third from the tongue. The 90 samples were submitted to Pap cytology and Polymerase Chain Reaction. The data were statistically analyzed by "Chi Square Test" (χ2) and "Kappa Index" (κ). High prevalence of HPV was found in the tongue (30%) and periodontal tissues (15%). High risk (HR) genotype -16 was detected with the highest percentage (67%), and genotypes -52 and -6 were also detected. Whenever HPV was present in periodontal location, it was also identified in the tongue of the same patients, of whom 88.89% reported that they practiced oral sex. Is worth noting the clinical finding of stomatologic lesions compatible with foliate papillitis in patients with positive intraoral HPV. High prevalence of HPV was found in the female population in Cordoba, with genotype -16 being detected at the highest percentage. No positive correlation was found between HPV and higher incidence and severity of periodontal lesions.

RESUMO

Actinobacillosis is a common cause of sporadic infection in cattle. It was mostly characterized as a pyogranulomatous inflammation of the tongue, but also soft tissues as lymph nodes, other digestive tract localization and skin. The aim of this study was to describe an episode of granulomatous dermatitis and lymphadenitis affecting a bull herd in Argentina during 2010. Actinobacillus lignieresii was isolated from samples collected from one of the affected bulls, and characteristic lesions were observed. Lesions other than 'wooden tongue' are usually uncommon; however, actinobacillosis should be included as a differential diagnosis for cutaneous diseases.
