RESUMO

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has been used for more than three decades as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of allergic diseases. Studies have demonstrated its efficacy and safety, and numerous clinical trials have evaluated these parameters. In the present study, through patient perception, we investigated the patient satisfaction with the use of house dust mite SLIT treatment. "Satisfaction Scale for Patients Receiving Allergen Immunotherapy" (ESPIA) questionnaire, a standardized and validated instrument for clinical studies evaluating allergen immunotherapy, was applied to allergic patients (N = 136). Children and adults of both sexes who received SLIT for Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and/or Blomia tropicalis, according to the results of an immediate reading puncture test, were included. Data analysis showed that the perception of treatment effectiveness was 92%, performance improvement in the daily activities was 91%, a satisfactory cost-benefit balance was 84%, and the perception of general satisfaction was 97%. The results showed a high perception of satisfaction in allergic patients undergoing house dust mite SLIT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is a considerable variation in the prevalence of allergic disorders in developing countries. These differences may be attributable to different methodological problems and to the lack of operational definitions. Several studies suggest that the prevalence of allergic diseases has been increasing worldwide in recent years. However, in Mexico, there is no data in open population. OBJECTIVE: To know in open population the prevalence of allergic diseases in the counties of Mexico City, the frequence of symptoms in each allergic disease, the therapeutic modalities that patients seek, the school and work annual absences and the amount of money that each patient spends in antiallergic drugs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was an open-population, cross-sectional trial, in two phases with a random sample size of 8,000 individuals from 214 public health centers. Statistical analysis was made with Excel 97-2004: Mann-Whitney U test for continuous variables and chi-square-test for discrete variables, p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The prevalence of allergic diseases in Mexico City was 42.6%, allergic rhinitis was the most frequent. Children are the largest age group affected. The highest prevalence was found in Tlahuac county. Coexistence of allergic diseases was found in 19.9%. The 44.2% of allergic patients attended to their general practitioner. 20.4% of all patients spent 10-20% of their income in medicines and 26% do not have money to buy antiallergic drugs. School and work annual absences are 3.37 +/- 3.86 and 6.2 +/- 12.84 days, respectively. CONCLUSION: Allergic diseases must be considered a public-health problem in Mexico City.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To gather and calculate utilities for a wide range of health states in the pediatric population. STUDY DESIGN: The study subjects, parents or guardians at least 18 years of age with at least 1 child under age 18 years, were recruited through our Pediatric Research Network (PResNet). Recruitment locations included pediatric clinics, the Indiana State Fair, and public and private conventions. Each subject's utilities were assessed on 3 random health states out of 29 chosen for the study. Both the time trade-off and standard gamble methods were used to measure utilities. RESULTS: Utilities were assessed in a total of 4016 participants (a recruitment rate of 88%). Utility values ranged from a high for acute otitis media (0.96 by standard gamble; 0.97 by time trade-off) to a low for severe mental retardation (0.59 by standard gamble; 0.51 by time trade-off). CONCLUSIONS: Our extensive data set of utility assessments for a wide range of disease states can aid future economic evaluations of pediatric health care.
