RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adequate phonation is self-regulated by auditory feedback. Children with bilateral profound hearing loss (PHL) lack this feedback resulting in abnormal voice. Adequate hearing aid use and auditory-verbal therapy (AVT) may improve voice quality in deaf children. OBJECTIVE: To study whether hearing aid use and AVT approach improve acoustic parameters of voice of children with bilateral PHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen children with bilateral PHL were studied. Age range 2-5 years (X = 53.04 months; SD = 9.54). All children were fitted with hearing aids according to auditory testing and they underwent a 1-year auditory habilitation period using the AVT approach. Acoustic analysis of voice including F0, shimmer, and jitter was performed at the onset and at the end of the auditory habilitation period. Final acoustic data were compared to a matched control group of 19 children, age range 2-5 years (X = 52.85; SD = 9.74) with normal hearing. RESULTS: Mean fundamental frequency (F0) was significantly increased after AVT intervention. Shimmer and jitter significantly (P < 0.05) improved after the intervention period. However, despite the improvements, mean F0 at the end of the intervention period was still significantly (P < 0.05) decreased as compared to controls. Also, mean shimmer and jitter at the end of the habilitation period were still significantly (P < 0.05) higher as compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary study suggest that hearing aid use and auditory habilitation with AVT approach improved acoustic voice parameters of children with PHL. However, acoustic parameters persisted abnormal as compared to matched normal hearing controls. AVT approach and regular hearing aid use seem to be safe and reliable clinical tools for improving voice quality of children with PFL.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe, in terms of functional gain and word recognition, the audiological results of patients under 18 years of age implanted with the active bone conduction implant, Bonebridge™. DESIGN: Retrospective case studies conducted by reviewing the medical records of patients receiving implants between 2014 and 2016 in the public health sector in Chile. STUDY SAMPLE: All patients implanted with the Bonebridge were included (N = 15). Individuals who had bilateral conductive hearing loss, secondary to external ear malformations, were considered as candidates. RESULTS: The average hearing threshold one month after switch on was 25.2 dB (95%CI 23.5-26.9). Hearing thresholds between 0.5 and 4 kHz were better when compared with bone conduction hearing aids. Best performance was observed at 4 kHz, where improvements to hearing were observed throughout the adaptation process. There was evidence of a significant increase in the recognition of monosyllables. CONCLUSIONS: The Bonebridge implant showed improvements to hearing thresholds and word recognition in paediatric patients with congenital conductive hearing loss.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the benefits and degree of satisfaction of adult and elderly patients fitted with hearing aids in a service accredited by the Brazilian Public Health Service. METHOD: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 34 individuals with bilateral hearing loss aged 18 and above who had never been offered hearing aids. Scales "Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults" and "Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version" were used to assess the benefits yielded by the hearing aids. Scale "Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life" was used to gauge patient satisfaction. The first two were applied on the day the patients were fitted with hearing aids and one month later, whereas the third was applied only one month after the patients had been fitted with the hearing aids. RESULTS: After the subjects were offered hearing aids, significant reductions were seen in the difficulties they experienced as a consequence of hearing loss. The scores in the Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life scale indicated a high degree of satisfaction among patients. These results were not statistically different when gender and age (adult/elderly) subgroups were compared. CONCLUSION: The subjects included in the study have benefitted from being fitted with hearing aids and have been very happy with the outcome of the treatment.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Some individuals with hearing loss choose to be fitted with hearing aids. Compliance is significantly affected by how satisfied patients are with their hearing aids. Patient satisfaction can be assessed through questionnaires and scales. OBJECTIVE: To assess the degree of satisfaction of patients fitted with hearing aids. METHOD: Scale "Satisfaction With Amplification in Daily Life" (SADL) was applied to 180 patients fitted with hearing aids; results were categorized based on the mean values observed for global satisfaction scores and scores attained on each subscale. Patients were interviewed for additional information. RESULTS: Mean global score was 5.6; 48.9% of the subjects were very satisfied, 47.2% were satisfied, and 3.9% were dissatisfied. The mean score on subscale Positive Effects was 5.6; the mean score for Service and Cost was 6.2; for Negative Factors the mean score was 4.9; and the mean score on subscale Personal Image was 5.8. Of the patients fitted with in-the-ear hearing aids, 83.3% were very satisfied. Fifteen percent of the individuals were dissatisfied with their Personal Image. Sensorineural and profound hearing loss patients were less satisfied, with 5.4% and 50.0% of the subjects revealing dissatisfaction with their hearing aids. CONCLUSION: Patients were generally very satisfied with their hearing aids. Satisfaction rates were higher among patients fitted with in-the-ear hearing aids. Dissatisfaction was higher in subscale Personal Image. Lesser degrees of satisfaction were seen in patients with sensorineural and profound hearing loss.

Para avaliar o benefício, foram utilizados os questionários Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adult (adultos) e Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version (idosos). Para avaliar a satisfação, foi utilizado o Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life. Os dois primeiros foram aplicados no dia da adaptação, enquanto o terceiro foi aplicado somente um mês após a adaptação. RESULTADOS: Foi verificada redução significativa nas dificuldades causadas pela privação auditiva após a adaptação das próteses. Os escores obtidos no Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life indicaram um alto nível de satisfação. .
