OBJECTIVE: To analyze the constituting knowledge of militant nurses in trade associations. METHOD: Historical research, based on the oral history method, with a qualitative approach carried out with 11 nurses who are/were militants for professional issues since the 1980s in the state of Bahia. The data collected through semi-structured interviews were organized in the software n-vivo 10 and analyzed based on dialectical hermeneutics. RESULTS: We identified pedagogical, administrative, public health, sociological, and trade union background knowledge as constituent of militant individuals. Final considerations: The constituting knowledge of militant nurses are inscribed in the Social Sciences, distanced from biomedical knowledge and power, pointing at ways for structuring nursing curricula. We identified the Brazilian Association of Nursing as a space for political formation.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Analizar los saberes constitutivos de enfermeras militantes en entidades de clase. Método: Investigación histórica, basada en el método de historia oral, de enfoque cualitativo realizada con 11 enfermeras que militaron o militan por las cuestiones profesionales desde la década de 1980 en el estado de Bahía. Los datos recogidos mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas se organizaron en el programa informático n-vivo 10 y se analizaron con base en la hermenéutica dialéctica. Resultados: Se identificaron los saberes pedagógicos, administrativos, de salud colectiva, sociológicos y de formación sindical como saberes constitutivos de sujetos militantes. Consideraciones finales: Los saberes constitutivos de enfermeras militantes están inscritos en las Ciencias Sociales, alejados del saber y del poder biomédico, señalando caminos para la estructuración de los currículos de enfermería. Se identificó a la Asociación Brasileña de Enfermería como un espacio de formación política.

Método: Pesquisa histórica, baseada no método de história oral, de abordagem qualitativa realizada com 11 enfermeiras que militaram/militam pelas questões profissionais desde a década de 1980 no estado da Bahia. Os dados coletados por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas foram organizados no software n-vivo 10 e analisados com base na hermenêutica dialética. Resultados: Identificados os saberes pedagógico, administrativo, saúde coletiva, sociológico e de formação sindical como saberes constitutivos de sujeitos militantes. Considerações finais: Os saberes constitutivos de enfermeiras militantes estão inscritos nas Ciências Sociais, distanciados do saber e do poder biomédico, apontando caminhos para estruturação dos currículos de enfermagem. Identificou-se a Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem como um espaço de formação política.

METHOD: an integrative literature review, for which searches were conducted in the databases LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, BDENF, and Scopus. RESULTS: sixteen articles published between the years 2004-2013 were selected, 68.75% of which were sourced from Brazilian journals and 31.25% from American journals. CONCLUSION: civilian nursing organizations are important and necessary, because they have collaborated decisively in nursing struggles in favor of the working class and society in general, and these contributions influence different axes of professional performance.

Método: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura em que foram realizadas buscas nos bancos de dados LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, BDENF e Scopus. Resultados: foram selecionados 16 artigos publicados entre os anos de 2004 a 2013, sendo que 68,75% dos trabalhos são originados do Brasil e 31,25% são publicações estadunidenses. Conclusão: as entidades da Enfermagem são importantes e necessárias, pois têm colaborado decisivamente nas lutas da categoria em favor da classe e da sociedade em geral, e essas contribuições incidem sobre os vários eixos de atuação profissional.

Método: se trata de una revisión integrativa de la literatura, en la cual fueron realizadas búsquedas en los bancos de datos LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, BDENF y Scopus. Resultados: fueron seleccionados 16 artículos publicados entre los años 2004 y 2013, resultando que el 68,75% de los mismos fueron realizados en Brasil, y el 31,25% en los Estados Unidos. Conclusión: las entidades de Enfermería son importantes y necesarias, dado que han colaborado decisivamente en las luchas de la categoría en favor de la clase y de la sociedad en general, y dichas contribuciones inciden sobre varios ejes de actuación profesional.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the route followed by nursing in Brazil, through the foundation of nursing organizations and the emergence of nursing leaders and pioneers. AIM: To present the origins of modern nursing in Brazil, identifying the main nurse-leaders and analysing their performance for the creation and consolidation of the nursing organizations. METHODS: It is a historical and social study with descriptive approach, to describe the process of Brazilian nursing professionalization and leadership through a literature review. RESULTS: The oldest nursing organization is the Brazilian Nursing Association that holds scientific and cultural activities. There are also nurses' unions and nursing specialty associations, such as the Brazilian Academy for the History of Nursing, and the Federal Nursing Council. The latter has compulsory membership for controlling nursing services according to the qualifications of the personnel. The very first school for nurses in the Nightingale system was created in São Paulo, 1894, at the Samaritan Hospital, and by the government in 1923, in Rio de Janeiro, for which American nurses, led by Ethel Parsons, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, were essential for the creation of the Anna Nery Nursing School, still in operation within a federal university. Some nurses pioneered these works such as Edith Fraenkel, Maria Rosa Pinheiro, Amalia Carvalho and others. CONCLUSION: The work done by nursing leaders has brought to the profession a better status and made it more recognized by the society.

Estudo histórico social cujo objeto foi a circunstância de criação da Seção Alagoas da Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem, tendo como objetivo analisar a luta de enfermeiras em Alagoas para inserir neste campo a cultura da Enfermagem difundida no Brasil através da Associação fundada em 1926 pelas egressas da Escola de Enfermagem Anna Nery no Rio de Janeiro. Foram fontes primárias documentos oficiais e não oficiais alusivos ao evento e as fontes secundárias foram livros de história do Brasil, de Alagoas e da Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem. Documentos com depoimentos de enfermeiras que participaram da criação da associação alagoana, colhidos em estudos anteriores, formalmente cedidos, constituíram também as fontes secundárias. A análise das fontes identificou as doze enfermeiras que criaram a seção, que foi instalada na Escola de Auxiliares de Enfermagem, única escola existente na capital Maceió. As primeiras ações foram criação do cargo de enfermeira na Secretaria Estadual de Saúde e correção de irregularidades no ensino e assistência de Enfermagem. Concluiu-se afirmando a importância da seção alagoana criada para unir as sócias e desenvolver a Enfermagem Alagoana.

This is an academic effort to rescue fragments of the construction process of an entity pioneering the representativeness of the Brazilian nursing - the Brazilian Nursing Association (ABEn), who completed 85 years of existence and created the first scientific journal of nursing, Nursing Annals, currently the Brazilian Nursing Journal, which celebrated 80 years in 2012. The contribution of ABEn for the scientific and professional development of nursing in the country is approached with analytical and critical humility and very timid perspective, since it was based more on information from secondary sources than on primary ones, according to an overview about what happen from 1926 to 2011. The subjectivity and selectivity of facts led us to highlight some instances of power over others, to highlight points of the development of Brazilian nursing as a discipline, profession and work field.

This is a historical-social study, which aimed to analyze and argue the on the importance of the Brazilian Nursing Memory Centre for preservation and publicity of the professional memory. As data sources it was used the documentary Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem: 1926-1976, and the Project of Implantation and the Technical Report of the Memory Centre's Documentary and Phonic Collection, both filed in the referred Centre. The data, collected in June 2013, were subjected to external and intern criticism, aiming to its validation. The analysis occurred concurrently with data collection and was made based on knowledge about the topic, supported by Bourdieu's concept of habitus. It was observed that, since 1926, the directions of the Brazilian Nursing Association contributed for the Memory Centre implantation, by means of the importance attributed to the preservation of the memory. It was concluded that the memory enshrined in the collection constitutes material and symbolic goods for the Brazilian nursing to be transmitted through the historiography derived from it.
