Tectal gliomas represent a subset of low-grade tumors that arise in the tectal region at the roof of the brainstem. Symptoms of tectal glioma include those caused by increased intracranial pressure due to obstructive hydrocephalus. Headache, blurred vision, double vision, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms. In the treatment, ETV (endoscopic third ventriculostomy) or VP-shunt (ventriculoperitoneal) can be applied to treat hydrocephalus. Tectal gliomas are usually diagnosed in childhood and often occur in adults. They are often benign, slowly progressing lesions; outpatient clinical and radiological follow- up is sufficient. We present two cases of pediatric patients with mesencephalic tectal plate tumors. An 11-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl applied to the Emergency Department with different complaints. The 11 year-old-boy was treated with VP-shunt due to acute hydrocephalus.


Los gliomas tectales representan un subtipo de tumores de bajo grado que se desarrollan en la región tectal, en la parte superior del tronco encefálico. Los síntomas incluyen los causados por el aumento de la presión intracraneal por hidrocefalia obstructiva. Son comunes la cefalea, la visión borrosa o doble, las náuseas y los vómitos. El tratamiento de la hidrocefalia es la ventriculostomía endoscópica del tercer ventrículo o la derivación ventrículo-peritoneal. Los gliomas tectales se diagnostican habitualmente en la infancia, pero son frecuentes también en adultos. En general son benignos y de progresión lenta; es suficiente el seguimiento ambulatorio clínico y radiológico. Se presentan dos pacientes pediátricos con tumores de la placa tectal mesencefálica. Un niño de 11 años y una niña de 15 años concurrieron al Departamento de Emergencias con diferentes síntomas. El niño fue tratado con derivación ventrículo-peritoneal por hidrocefalia aguda.

Re-entrant connections are inherent to nervous system organization; however, a comprehensive understanding of their operation is still lacking. In birds, topographically organized re-entrant signals, carried by axons from the nucleus-isthmi-parvocellularis (Ipc), are distinctly recorded as bursting discharges across the optic tectum (TeO). Here, we used up to 48 microelectrodes regularly spaced on the superficial tectal layers of anesthetized pigeons to characterize the spatial-temporal pattern of this axonal re-entrant activity in response to different visual stimulation. We found that a brief luminous spot triggered repetitive waves of bursting discharges that, appearing from initial sources, propagated horizontally to areas representing up to 28° of visual space, widely exceeding the area activated by the retinal fibers. In response to visual motion, successive burst waves started along and around the stimulated tectal path, tracking the stimulus in discontinuous steps. When two stimuli were presented, the burst-wave sources alternated between the activated tectal loci, as if only one source could be active at any given time. Because these re-entrant signals boost the retinal input to higher visual areas, their peculiar dynamics mimic a blinking "spotlight," similar to the internal searching mechanism classically used to explain spatial attention. Tectal re-entry from Ipc is thus highly structured and intrinsically discontinuous, and higher tectofugal areas, which lack retinotopic organization, will thus receive incoming visual activity in a sequential and piecemeal fashion. We anticipate that analogous re-entrant patterns, perhaps hidden in less bi-dimensionally organized topographies, may organize the flow of neural activity in other parts of the brain as well.

The parabigeminal nucleus (PBG) is the mammalian homologue to the isthmic complex of other vertebrates. Optogenetic stimulation of the PBG induces freezing and escape in mice, a result thought to be caused by a PBG projection to the central nucleus of the amygdala. However, the isthmic complex, including the PBG, has been classically considered satellite nuclei of the Superior Colliculus (SC), which upon stimulation of its medial part also triggers fear and avoidance reactions. As the PBG-SC connectivity is not well characterized, we investigated whether the topology of the PBG projection to the SC could be related to the behavioral consequences of PBG stimulation. To that end, we performed immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and neural tracer injections in the SC and PBG in a diurnal rodent, the Octodon degus. We found that all PBG neurons expressed both glutamatergic and cholinergic markers and were distributed in clearly defined anterior (aPBG) and posterior (pPBG) subdivisions. The pPBG is connected reciprocally and topographically to the ipsilateral SC, whereas the aPBG receives afferent axons from the ipsilateral SC and projected exclusively to the contralateral SC. This contralateral projection forms a dense field of terminals that is restricted to the medial SC, in correspondence with the SC representation of the aerial binocular field which, we also found, in O. degus prompted escape reactions upon looming stimulation. Therefore, this specialized topography allows binocular interactions in the SC region controlling responses to aerial predators, suggesting a link between the mechanisms by which the SC and PBG produce defensive behaviors.

A defining feature of the amniote tecto-fugal visual pathway is a massive bilateral projection to the thalamus originating from a distinct neuronal population, tectal ganglion cells (TGCs), of the optic tectum/superior colliculus (TeO/SC). In sauropsids, the thalamic target of the tecto-fugal pathway is the nucleus rotundus thalami (Rt). TGCs axons collateralize en route to Rt to target the nucleus pretectalis principalis (PT), which in turn gives rise to bilateral projection to the TeO. In rodents, the thalamic target of these TGCs afferents is the caudal division of the pulvinar complex (PulC). No pretectal structures in receipt of TGC collaterals have been described in this group. However, Baldwin et al. (Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2011;519(6):1071-1094) reported in the squirrel a feedback projection from the PulC to the SC. Pulvino-tectal (Pul-T) cells lie at the caudal pole of the PulC, intermingled with the axonal terminals of TGCs. Here, by performing a combination of neuronal tracing, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and in situ hybridization, we characterized the pattern of projections, neurochemical profile, and genoarchitecture of Pul-T cells in the diurnal Chilean rodent Octodon degus. We found that Pul-T neurons exhibit pretectal, but not thalamic, genoarchitectonical markers, as well as hodological and neurochemical properties that match specifically those of the avian nucleus PT. Thus, we propose that Pul-T cells constitute a pretectal cell population hidden within the dorsal thalamus of mammals. Our results solve the oddity entailed by the apparent existence of a noncanonic descending sensory thalamic projection and further stress the conservative character of the tectofugal pathway.

The Wistar Audiogenic Rat (WAR) is a model whose rats are predisposed to develop seizures following acoustic stimulation. We aimed to establish the transcriptional profile of the WAR model, searching for genes that help in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the predisposition and seizures expression of this strain. RNA-Seq of the corpora quadrigemina of WAR and Wistar rats subjected to acoustic stimulation revealed 64 genes differentially regulated in WAR. We validated twelve of these genes by qPCR in stimulated and naive (non-stimulated) WAR and Wistar rats. Among these, Acsm3 was upregulated in WAR in comparison with both control groups. In contrast, Gpr126 and Rtel1 were downregulated in naive and stimulated WAR rats in comparison with the Wistar controls. Qdpr was upregulated only in stimulated WAR rats that exhibited audiogenic seizures. Our data show that there are genes with differential intrinsic regulation in the WAR model and that seizures can alter gene regulation. We identified new genes that might be involved in the epileptic phenotype and comorbidities of the WAR model.

Arachnoid cysts are accumulations of cerebrospinal fluid that occur within the arachnoid membrane due to the splitting or duplication of this structure. The aim of this retrospective study is to report the occurrence of this condition in 26 dogs, as well as to describe the findings of computed tomography imaging and magnetic resonance image scans and to correlate these with the clinical signs. A prevalence of the condition was observed in males, predominantly in the small breeds Miniature Pinscher and Shih Tzu, with age raging from 2 months to 9 years. The mainly clinical signs observed in these dogs were seizures and cerebellar ataxia. The study concluded that in 17 dogs the quadrigeminal arachnoid cyst was regarded as an incidental finding, in 6 dogs this condition was regarded as the determinant cause of the clinical signs, and in 3 dogs some clinical signs were associated with arachnoid cyst, but they also presented clinical signs involving others sites of intracranial lesion. Cistos aracnoide são acúmulos de líquido cefalorraquidiano que ocorre dentro da membrana aracnoide devido à divisão ou duplicação desta estrutura. O objetivo desse estudo retrospectivo é relatar a ocorrência dessa condição em 26 cães, assim como descrever os aspectos de imagem pela tomografia computadorizada e ressonância magnética e correlacionar com os sinais clínicos. No estudo observamos a prevalência em machos, em raças de pequeno porte, com predomínio de Pinscher miniatura e Shih Tzu, com idade variando de dois meses a nove anos. Os principais sinais neurológicos observados nestes animais foram crises epiléticas e ataxia cerebelar. Foi possível concluir que em 17 cães o cisto aracnoide quadrigeminal foi considerado um achado incidental, em seis cães essa condição foi considerada a causa determinante dos sinais clínicos, e em três cães alguns sinais estavam associados com o cisto aracnoide, porém esses animais apresentaram sinais clínicos relacionados a outros sítios de lesão intracraniana.

RESUMO

Bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) is a rare entity, characterized by antero-posterior head bobbing, which is of the type "yes-yes." Less frequently, having a head movement of the type "no-no" is described. We report an unusual case of an 80-year-old man with a cystic mass of the lamina quadrigemina, extending to the posterior fossa. We conclude that ventriculocystocisternotomy associated with a cystoperitoneal shunt is an effective treatment for a symptomatic giant arachnoid cyst in the lamina quadrigemina.

Intracranial lipomas are congenital, benign and slow-growing tumors. The incidence were 0.1 to 0.5 percent of all primary brain tumors and are often diagnosed in incidental findings of neuroradiological investigation. Lipoma in quadrigeminal region occurs in 25 percent of intracranial lipomas and has been reported as lipomas in quadrigeminal cistern (perimesencephalic cistern), quadrigeminal plate, ambiens cistern or superior medullary velum. MRI is the most major exam. The treatment is conservative in most cases, surgical removal is hampered by their deep location and contiguous with adjacent neurovascular structures. The authors report two cases of lipoma in the quadrigeminal region, incidental findings and discuss the clinical findings, neuroimaging and treatment.


Lipomas intracranianos são tumores congênito, benigno e de crescimento lento. Sua incidência é de 0.1 a 0.5 por cento de todos os tumores cerebrais primários e são frequentemente diagnosticados em achados incidental de investigação neuroradiológica. Lipoma na região quadrigeminal ocorre em 25 por cento dos lipomas intracranianos e tem sido relatados como lipomas na cisterna quadrigeminal (cisterna perimesencefálica), placa quadrigeminal, cisterna ambiens ou véu medular superior. O exame de eleição é ressonância magnética. O tratamento é conservador na maioria dos casos, a remoção cirúrgica é dificultada pela sua localização profunda e da contiguidade com estruturas neurovasculares adjacentes. Os autores relatam dois casos de lipoma na região quadrigeminal achados incidentalmente e discutem os achados clínicos, imagem e tratamento.
