RESUMO

Abstract Combining ability analysis provides useful information for the selection of parents, also information regarding the nature and magnitude of involved gene actions. Crops improvement involves strategies for enhancing yield potentiality and quality components. Targeting the improvement of respective characters in bitter gourd, combining ability and genetic parameters for 19 characters were estimated from a 6×6 full diallel analysis technique. The results revealed that the variances due to general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were highly significant for most of the important characters. It indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive gene actions. GCA variances were higher in magnitude than SCA variances for all the characters studied indicating the predominance of the additive gene effects in their inheritance. The parent P2 (BG 009) appeared as the best general combiner for earliness; P1 (BG 006) for number of fruits, average single fruit weight and fruit yield; P4 (BG 027) for node number of first female flower and days to seed fruit maturity; P3 (BG 011) for fruit length and thickness of the fruit flesh; P5 (BG 033) for 100-seed weight; and P6 for number of nodes per main vine. The SCA effect as well as reciprocal effect was also significant for most of the important characters in different crosses.

Giant cell arteritis is an autoimmune disease that affects medium and large caliber vessels, creating deposits of inflammatory clusters on the arterial wall. It is the most common form of large vessel vasculitis, but given the variability of biopsy efficiency and of other diagnostic strategies employed, the diagnosis of this disease is challenging. We report the case of a 69-year-old female patient who presented with neurological deficit and increased bilateral sensation in the temporal region associated with excruciating headache. Workup revealed calcification of the superficial temporal, vertebral and ophthalmic arteries, as well as suggestive findings on Doppler ultrasound such as the halo sign, pointing to superficial temporal arteritis though not excluding the possibility of those calcifications being consistent with atherosclerosis in a patient with advanced chronic renal disease, which has been reported as giving rise to false-positive results. Knowledge of the main differences between the 2 diagnoses is important, given the wide range of diagnostic imaging possibilities which can avoid the need for biopsy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is the most common inflammatory disease in patients over 50 years. Information about the disease in Latin America (LATAM) is scarce. We aimed to evaluate a group of Colombian patients with PMR and to conduct a systematic review of PMR in LATAM. METHODS: A multicentric retrospective study was performed. Medical records of 256 PMR patients were evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups, those fulfilling the 2012 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR) classification criteria for PMR and those who did not (i.e., clinical diagnosis). A systematic literature review and meta regression was performed comparing Colombian vs LATAM patients. RESULTS: From 256 patients, 145 (56.6%) fulfilled the 2012 EULAR/ACR criteria, and 111 (43.3%) were classified by clinical diagnosis. Inflammatory bilateral shoulder pain, pelvic girdle aching, morning stiffness >45 min, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CPR), and Methotrexate (MTX) prescription were more common in the 2012 EULAR/ACR group. None of the included patients presented overt polyautoimmunity (PolyA), whereas up to 24% exhibited latent PolyA. In addition, these patients showed high frequency of malignancy (7.59%). In the meta regression analysis, Colombian patients exhibited lower ESR levels, and were less likely to develop giant cell arteritis (GCA) as compared to the rest of LATAM data. CONCLUSION: Patients with PMR in LATAM exhibit similar phenotypes from other cohorts worldwide. Malignancy, GCA and latent PolyA should be considered in the routine clinical follow-up of patients with PMR.

RESUMO

The influence of different combinations of Syrah grape maturation degree (19, 21 and 23 °Brix) and maceration times (10, 20 and 30 days) on the volatile profile and aroma potential was evaluated for the first time through different chromatographic platforms (GC × GC/TOFMS, GC-O-OSME, GC-FID and GC/MS). GC × GC/TOFMS analyses resulted in 145 identified compounds and among these 29 were determined to be the most important for wine differentiation. The aroma compounds allowed the discrimination of Syrah wines made with grapes macerated for a shorter time (ten days) due to the higher levels of volatile compounds. The evaluation of these wines through GC-O-OSME together with GC-FID, MS resulted in the designation of 19 °Brix as the most appropriate grape maturation degree to obtain a greater number of volatiles with pleasant odor and higher intensity and persistence. GC × GC/TOFMS allowed five and six co-elutions to be resolved, involving, respectively, ten and twelve important wine compounds.

RESUMO

A novel dynamic approach is described to profile volatile organic compound (VOC) and semi-VOC (SVOC) emission during coffee roasting aimed at analysing components present in the roasting plume, and to monitor their evolution during the process. Two sorbents - coconut shell charcoal (CSC) and styrene-divinylbenzene resin (XAD-2) - were evaluated while collecting substances in four sequential time intervals (0-3, 3-6, 6-9 and 9-12 min). Extracted VOCs (<200 Da) and SVOCs were analysed by gas chromatography (GC), and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) with flame ionisation (FID) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) detection. Results showed CSC extraction presented poor recovery of VOCs and SVOCs released during roasting. However, XAD-2 was able to collect both groups, including SVOCs of >400 Da. GC × GC resolved many co-eluting compounds observed in 1D GC and allowed chemical group type cluster analysis, revealing that many non-polar VOCs are observed within the 0-3 min interval, and that the release of polar and higher molar mass SVOCs were mostly found within the 3-6 min interval. These group-type cluster analyses offer a broad spectrum chemical profile of the released substances. It may also reveal detailed insights into the roast process evolution over time.
